The memes above? A fan of indie game developer Brianna Wu made them, using the text from some of Wu’s acerbic tweets about #GamerGaters. Wu thought the memes were funny, and posted them to Twitter.
This was just sent to me, a new meme called Oppressed Gamergater. Love it. http://t.co/Sp9sQPgLxQ pic.twitter.com/6UEWRgPGcn
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
Haha. This Oppressed Gamergater thing is so full of win. I'll RT the best ones. http://t.co/Sp9sQPgLxQ pic.twitter.com/4DQtwfpGN5
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
It turns out that #GamerGaters don’t really have much of a sense of humor about themselves.
Over on 8chan, the regulars decided to take over the meme.
A fan made a meme of 6 of my Tweets. #Gamergate spent day filling it with 36 pages of garbage http://t.co/tjzQxePXH0 pic.twitter.com/aailgFlNM9
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
It got nastier — TRIGGER WARNING for what follows for explicit, violent threats.
#Gamergate is zerging a meme an Isometric fan made of my Tweets. It's up to 45 pages of attacks like this one. pic.twitter.com/fYhHr5QeZm
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
And nastier still.
8chan/#gamergate generated 60 pages of this today attacking me. I'm going on a Twitter break till I feel more safe. pic.twitter.com/A0GYsdJ3KA
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 10, 2014
Oh, but #GamerGate isn’t about misogyny. …
Then, believe it or not, it got worse:
8chan/#gamergate just doxxed me, posting all kinds of personal information about me.
Guys, THIS is the war on industry women. Wake up.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
And then it escalated to death threats:
And, here's the part of the night where I call the police. pic.twitter.com/uMByxBEtYz
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
The police just came by. Husband and I are going somewhere safe.
Remember, #gamergate isn't about attacking women. pic.twitter.com/ZU6oEVxMGL
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
All this because she made a few fucking jokes on Twitter. About #GamerGaters. While being a woman.
Oh, but #GamerGate is about ethics.
But guess what, assholes:
Announcement: I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I am going to keep making games. And I will keep speaking up for women in gamedev.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
To the women out there scared to make games because they see this happening, I swear – WE WILL CHANGE THIS CULTURE FOR YOU.

In a fit of pique, I wrote an essay about GamerGate and the Golden Mean Fallacy.
It may have been a bad idea. I guess we’ll see.

tell me if I should stop making these, or if you all find them amusing.

I’m very sorry that Brianna Wu had to endure such ordeal, really such harassment should not exists.
But here a question, how the act of few are attributed to a whole group of person eg “gamergate” ?

Dig the essay, inu. I’ve actually encountered a lot of that shit in a different arena, which is regarding child abuse and multi shit.
Sorry we missed you in Boston, by the way!
I’m sorry I missed y’all too 🙂
@ inurashii – very cool app and essay. Yeah for inu twofor’s!!!
Also, planning to steal “BothSideser” from you, but imm’a shorten it to BS’er, just ’cause.
inurashii, great blog post. Getting real sick of that strawman that anybody who opposes GamerHate’s tactics is opposed to their expressed ideals. You don’t get to claim you’re a grassroots movement made up of a broad spectrum of gamers, and then pick and choose which ones you want to attach the name of the movement to. The assholes making death threats think they’re just as much a part of GamerGate as everyone else, and who can argue?
@strivingally By your logic because anti-gg people have doxxed pro-gg people all of anti-gg is accountable.

Those are funny. I made one too.

Hellkell, I don’t think telling their mothers would have any impact, my eight year old daughter is being bullied in her ICT classes by a boy who thinks girls shouldn’t play games and shouldn’t code (I’m a software engineer and I’ve been teaching her coding). I approached his mum and tried to discuss his behaviour with her, she was dismissive because her little angel wouldn’t do that, well he does.
I have a friend who’s been well into the GG stuff since the beginning, and while I can see her points, but I’ve been finding it more and more disturbing how GG will talk about their opponents and how she’ll defend that. Like, they call Zoe Quinn “Literally Who”, Anita Sarkeesian “Literally Who 2”, and based on this, have started calling Brianna Wu “the new Literally Who” and debating which number she is. On the other hand, they’ll talk about how SJW culture is cult-like and tries to unperson opponents… while they’re reducing multiple women to an impersonal, mocking moniker and a number. Men they despise and consider too vile to use real names get their own personalized moniker, though. But when I point that out, I get a mountain of justifications.
Does anyone know what the current state of the law is on internet threats that could be credible? I’m thinking of the stuff where he said very clearly that he knows her address and is on his way. Can the feds prosecute people for that?
Hey everyone, I’m back. I just let through a bunch of comments from GGers; email the mods if any of them start acting uup.
Also, here are some pingbacks to this post. (I can’t let pingbacks through straightfowardly because they screw up with navigation between comment pages.)

@fruitloopsie, thanks! it was super easy on memegenerator.com. I learned that tip from Janet Bloomfield; she uploads stock photos of crying baby girls there for her feminist “threadwinner” images (because while they don’t convince feminists, they do win her fans ’cause boys be like “OMG JB’s being mean to those c***ts just like I want to be!”
seriously. memegenerator.com. You can also browse other memes and find pretty hilarious failed Men’s Rights memeing stuff.
Glancing up through the GG posts, I see nothing that merits a response. Just a bunch of No True Gamergater comments.
They’re more than “a part of GamerGate”. They’re the creators and leaders.
Those comments remind me of the sound of a fly that’s trapped in the car with you on a long drive – no way to get rid of it since you’re driving, but eh, not like it’s a meaningful noise anyway so you just tune it out.
It astounds me how often some bunch of jerks will start a decentralised campaign with open, anonymous membership, centred around targeting people for abuse, and then think they can let themselves off the hook for the worst elements that join with a perfunctory “But we are totally not okay with harassment”. As if telling a mob of anonymous interwebs goons to attack someone isn’t asking for everything up to doxxing and death/rape threats.
One more reason I don’t follow the gamer threads.
‘It astounds me how often some bunch of jerks will start a decentralised campaign with open, anonymous membership, centred around targeting people for abuse, and then think they can let themselves off the hook for the worst elements that join with a perfunctory “But we are totally not okay with harassment”. Quoted for truth.
