The memes above? A fan of indie game developer Brianna Wu made them, using the text from some of Wu’s acerbic tweets about #GamerGaters. Wu thought the memes were funny, and posted them to Twitter.
This was just sent to me, a new meme called Oppressed Gamergater. Love it. http://t.co/Sp9sQPgLxQ pic.twitter.com/6UEWRgPGcn
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
Haha. This Oppressed Gamergater thing is so full of win. I'll RT the best ones. http://t.co/Sp9sQPgLxQ pic.twitter.com/4DQtwfpGN5
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
It turns out that #GamerGaters don’t really have much of a sense of humor about themselves.
Over on 8chan, the regulars decided to take over the meme.
A fan made a meme of 6 of my Tweets. #Gamergate spent day filling it with 36 pages of garbage http://t.co/tjzQxePXH0 pic.twitter.com/aailgFlNM9
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
It got nastier — TRIGGER WARNING for what follows for explicit, violent threats.
#Gamergate is zerging a meme an Isometric fan made of my Tweets. It's up to 45 pages of attacks like this one. pic.twitter.com/fYhHr5QeZm
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 9, 2014
And nastier still.
8chan/#gamergate generated 60 pages of this today attacking me. I'm going on a Twitter break till I feel more safe. pic.twitter.com/A0GYsdJ3KA
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 10, 2014
Oh, but #GamerGate isn’t about misogyny. …
Then, believe it or not, it got worse:
8chan/#gamergate just doxxed me, posting all kinds of personal information about me.
Guys, THIS is the war on industry women. Wake up.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
And then it escalated to death threats:
And, here's the part of the night where I call the police. pic.twitter.com/uMByxBEtYz
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
The police just came by. Husband and I are going somewhere safe.
Remember, #gamergate isn't about attacking women. pic.twitter.com/ZU6oEVxMGL
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
All this because she made a few fucking jokes on Twitter. About #GamerGaters. While being a woman.
Oh, but #GamerGate is about ethics.
But guess what, assholes:
Announcement: I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I am going to keep making games. And I will keep speaking up for women in gamedev.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
To the women out there scared to make games because they see this happening, I swear – WE WILL CHANGE THIS CULTURE FOR YOU.
— Brianna Wu (@BriannaWu) October 11, 2014
Inurashii, I love your app. I have to say that when I got to the green candy who says “we love the meadow because it is so peaceful” the world flipped from adorable to creepy for me, but it’s an enjoyable experience either way.
haha, that’s funny because I write a lot of horror games too XD
Maybe I’ll rephrase jolly’s dialogue.
Wait, the person threatening has no mention of anything related to gamergate. How was the connection made?
Can someone make a meme with this text:
SEES WOMAN ASSOCIATING GAMERGATE WITH MISOGYNY
RESPONDS BY PROVING SHE’S RIGHT
inurashii wins. All hail Bootsy…inurashii!
Inurashii, AffirmApp is brilliant. (Tho’ I sort of want to see one with flowers or kittens because it weirds me out when food talks.)
I can be really flippant about the trolls and misogynists that whine about women wanting to be respected for their work in video games, but real talk: it’s absolutely sickening how much harassment women in the industry have to put up with. How on earth can anyone get to the point where you’re threatening people’s lives over memes and tweets?
I thought you people supported Phil Fish? Why did you put a trigger warning before a Phil Fish quote?
Also getting scared of maymays you choose to look at is ridiculous.
13-year-old asshats have a lot of time on their hands. Glad Brianna appears to still be going strong.
“A means to an end”, says the useless idiot. Who is being used as a means to an end by 4chan and Bog knows who all else.
I haven’t been able to see any embedded images in this or the last few posts (I can see the header image and read the block-quotes just fine). Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just something screwy going on at my end of the tube?
Probably just as well I can’t see the misogyny, it would only make me sad.
I’m having the same problem as AltoFronto– it started around the “panty sniffer” post. So it’s not just you. And while I’m fine not having to see these asshats flail, I am curious.
Reblogged this on Dreams of the Shining Horizon and commented:
#Gamergate finds another woman to harass.
#Gamergate is about harassing women and trying to drive them out of video games. It was always about harassing women and trying to drive them out of video games. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.
@AltoFronto and @Monster Garden – The images (including the background) won’t load for me at work, though they do load for me on my home network. Could be some kind of firewall/blocked sites?
I was having the same problem, then I turned off Adblock.
Shooting for feminist brownie points. How can you only be concerned with issues of one gender? You’re like the Al Sharpton of females 18-24
“If you have any kids, they’re going to die too….”
Because you made some memes.
People who write this kind of stuff off, say oh well deal with it it’s the internet….
are sick and sad.
I hope Brianna stays safe and applaud her for not running away from all this. They’ve chased so many women away because that is the tactic of hate-mongers who see someone as a threat. They feel they are entitled to terrorize people into silence, and that entitlement has to be called out. Definitely not defended or made to seem like it’s a joke. As they are so fond of pointing out, yes this is the Western World where women have rights. Like the First Amendment.
That guy who doxxed her never used the GG tag, though. How do you know it was one of them?
@MordsithJ: That worked like a charm, thanks!
RE: inurashii
Sneak adores your little candy app! Very soothing.
@inurashii
Love the app! Really cheered me up in this sweltering hot noon day 😀
@bodycrimes
What UK papers published that, out of curiosity? The Mail? The Telegraph?
I am hoping that this type of hate being spread online will lead to changes in laws, where perpetrators get made to answer for what they do.
Unmoderated spaces on the internet have become a cesspool. This is why we can’t have nice things.
Brenda Wu is a truly courageous woman. May she and her loved ones be safe.
WHOO!!! BRIANNA!! YOU GO GIRL!!!
