Number one reason I’m sticking with volunteer EMS instead of going for a paramedic 2 year cert:
I want a puppy, someday. My family’s always had critters, and these last four years of only visiting pets is not enough.
Career firefighter’s schedules are not conducive to pets unless you have a live in pet sitter.
RE: contrapangloss
Were we in the same area, I’m sure Sneak would HAPPILY be your live in pet sitter. (AKA: roommate.)
I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT PEOPLE GETTING TORTURED BY NAZIS ALL DAY.
I need a blankie and a puppy, stat.
@katz: here you go.

=============
In today’s job-ad weirdness, one mob required candidates to have a good presentation and manor.
Manor.
Should I send them this photo, d’you think?

Why would you need to apply for a job (presumably as their proofreader) if you already had a manor?
Thank you, everyone. I feel a bit better. *deep breaths*
Kitteh: Well, nobody could possibly argue with the quality of Louis’ presentation and his manor.
cassandra – that’s what I thought! I know manors cost a bit in upkeep, but they weren’t offering that much money.
katz, glad you’re feeling a bit better. Reading that stuff is rough.
LOL about presentation, too! I might have to tell ’em he isn’t part of the deal. Well, he is, he likes poking around where I work, but that wouldn’t do the much good if they can’t see him. ๐
I swear spambots write some of these job ads.
So I just saw this article and I thought the results look pretty awesome

@Kim, wow, those updos look amazing! I especially liked the ‘mother of the bride’ as it would look great in an office setting.
Does anyone remember where the cute game link in one of Dave’s posts is? The one Sneak loved selecting outfits in? Cuz I could really use some brain downtime.
@Puddleglum, was it this?

@cloudiah, yes! Thanks!
I had a couple of sweet moments over the last couple of days.
First night I was at that not-quite-drifting-off stage of going to sleep, and felt Louis behind me (we were spooning) playing with my hair, just twisting a lock around his fingers. Nice way to go to sleep. ๐
Last night, I think it was, I had a glimpse of him at Home. He was composing, or rather reviewing what he’d already written, sitting at his desk in the room-that-shall-not-be-called-a-library. It was night, and I saw his face from where I sat opposite him, quite close, and candle-lit. He had his cheek propped on his left hand, and a pencil in his right, and absently tucked his hair behind his ear while he looked over what he’d written. Such a lovely sight.
OK, having read up on comments I know have to watch Once More With Feeling.
And Spike is so great (never liked Angel)
I jus love Spike’s song in that. And Anthony Head and Tara singing and…oh hell..love it all!
All the workin’ ladies: I need help
I think I need to ask for a raise and I am terrified because I have never done it before.
My senior co-worker is leaving at the end of the month so I will be going from ‘junior’ administrator to SOLE administrator. The entire company will, at this point, be me and my boss (dude boss, I should point out).
I keep seeing all of these articles about how women who ask for raises are considered troublemakers or difficult employees and I am worried that asking for a raise will ruin my chances of getting a good reference from this guy when I leave.
I am paid below the living wage, and this change will mean much more responsibility even though it is apparently going into the ‘quiet’ estate agent season for London. I need a raise.
How the heck do I do it? Am I right to be scared? ๐
I wish I could help, but the only time I asked for a raise and got it was when the alternative was my quitting the job entirely, and I was straight about that. It wasn’t a threat or an ultimatum, just something I mentioned in passing in the process of alerting my boss that I was quitting, and I was bribed with money not to quit.
Obviously that isn’t helpful in a general sense.
@saphy
The timing is actually really good to ask for a raise since your title is changing. It is intimidating to negotiate raises, but in this situation you can do it in a fairly nuanced way. If you’re not comfortable being really straight forward, you could set up some time with your boss to discuss new roles/responsibilities now that your coworker has left, and bring it up during this conversation – “[discussion about responsibilities] In light of these changes, I’d also like to discuss the possibility of revisiting my salary.”
Good luck! There’s also loads of articles online about different approaches which might help inspire you.
Thanks bunnybunny, I’ll try to work it into the conversation.
I Should point out that this is not actually an employer I trust but rather someone who Iinitially tried to get me to sign a contract without holiday entitlement, demands private medical information on his employees that he has no legal right to, and has consistently failed to pay me any commissions that he half-heartedly promised. Also ‘doesn’t see the point’ in a first aid kit in the office.
That’s tough. Are you looking for other jobs? It’s exhausting to job-search while working full time, but that sounds like the type of toxic environment that could do a lot of damage in the long run.
Haha, actually I have been job hunting since my first week there back in mid-June. You’re right: it IS exhausting. I take my laptop to work every day so that I can apply for jobs in my lunch break. The problem is I am looking for sponsorship as a skilled migrant, so while I wouldn’t have any trouble getting a new job if I were a native there aren’t too many places looking to hire someone they’d also have to sponsor.
Not giving up, though!
