Reddit, what the hell is your problem?
So last night I discovered the PunchableFaces subreddit. That’s right, an entire subreddit devoted to posting pictures of people so that Redditors can fantasize about doing them bodily harm.
While most of the pictures in the subreddit are of boys and men – some targeted for being “faggots” – the recent posts (as of this writing) with the greatest number of upvotes and comments were, naturally, aimed at women. Specifically, at two outspoken feminists who’ve been singled out by Men’s Rights Activists and #GamerGaters for endless harassment: video game critic Anita Sarkeesian and Canadian feminist activist Chanty Binx, perhaps better known amongst her enemies as “Big Red.”
Here are five of the worst comments I’ve run across in the, er, discussions about these women.

Oh, and as an ADDED BONUS, here’s another terrible comment, this one directed at a gay teen boy whose picture is the third-most upvoted one on the subreddit as of this writing.
Why exactly is Reddit providing a forum for hate speech and explicit violent threats directed at, among others, gay teenagers and women who are already the regular targets of widespread harassment and threats?

So, why does reddit hoover up violent, misogynistic dimwits the way it does?
Is it the self-reinforcing echo chambers, that it allows essentially infinite variation on? Like where the popularity of statements among people who already agree with you become the most prominent?
Is it just that they have a large number of actual children, who don’t have any familiarity with the real world? I just don’t know.
The abuser’s lobby likes to fantasize about abusing women. I’m shocked!
They will literally never stop crying into their sippy-cups about that “big red” woman. How many years ago did that happen?

Reddit successfully adapted the 4chan model to a much wider public. Instead of “we’re edgy because we allow anyone to be as offensive as they want” we have “freeze peach trumps all the rights of everyone else”, but the spirit is the same.
I think it’s time we nuke reddit from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

jojo, I was thinking the exact same thing. This sort of shite attracts those sorts of pseud-intellectual “freedom for me but not for thee” libertarian types. Oh, the irony of them claiming their ideology is all about freedom. It’s just Abuser’s Lobby HQ for white dudes. I would argue that since Reddit isn’t regulated that is precisely why we run into this echo chamber crap. Then again, I believe in some regulatory measures for many things within society so I guess I don’t believe in FREEDOM.
Misha, Emma Watson has always been my favorite. She’s an intelligent, charming young lady.

Their insecurity is showing. They’re cowards and their hatred of these women are partly based on fear; a very bizarre fear that these women are as cruel and heartless as these reddit fucks.

What really jumps out to me is the person who specifically makes it a point that he wants to hit that person IN PUBLIC. Getting seen doing it is part of the point because WHAT THE HELL
Not to be a total downer, but 4chan had a response to Emma Watson’s speech. Possibly just a hoax, but it’s pretty telling that even their “hoax” involves punishing a woman for speaking up.
Guys, I know you don’t know me very well. I know I pop in VERY infrequently and generally post somewhat not-important posts. But I’m in a really rough spot. There’s the “the fappening 2.0” with more nude leaks (and misogynists everywhere rejoicing), people are so upset with Emma Watson for her claiming to be a feminist that they’ve created a “emmayourenext.com” site (which is just a huge countdown clock and hopefully is just bullshit) The Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson thing, etc etc.
And for personal info, I’m a nurse. And I hate my job so so so much. Not because I hate the work (though it’s probably too stressful for me right now) but because I work on a VERY small unit and it’s just passive aggressive as fuck. The other day I literally cried for the 40 minute drive home. And I had one day off, but I’m back tomorrow. I just can’t do it.
