Yes! I’d probably do something with the sense of smell and/or telepathy, since the insects use pheromones to communicate with each other, often, and telepathy is how new people get welcomed to town. I’d also probably just try and cover a variety of people with different impairments, and how they and their society view them. (Thomas obviously doesn’t see himself as disabled for not being able to smell and understand all the pheromones, but the bugs would probably be like, “Oh my gosh, you poor thing! How do you live?”)
I once designed some fish aliens that communicated using chromatophores. An alien with chromatophores that don’t function would be functionally mute.
(And hello to the kid! I’m sorry for her circumstances but I hope she will have a happier life now.)

And yeah, no telling whether Kid will stick around or not. We’ll probably find out in the ensuing weeks and months. She does seem a lot happier now that she’s been relieved.

There’s other Grumpy Cat news today. Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Rec will be voicing her in the upcoming Lifetime movie. Of course there are people on the Internet surprised that she is a girl, some insisting that Grumpy Cat is male, and some saying they had hoped for Alan Rickman or Morgan Freeman.

On a cat related note, my neighbors semi adopted a stray, and she has given birth to three grey kittens, two light, one dark. I have never been around little bitty kittens before and they make tiny meows! Like squeaks. They are shy but one tried to eat my shoelace.
…what is the movie about Grumpy Cat going to be about? Is it going to be a Cat POV movie? On Lifetime? Why are they making a movie about Grumpy Cat? Then again they made a reality TV show about competitive taxidermy, so what do I know?
It’s called “Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.” That’s all I know. Other than the voice casting announcement.

The sci-fi anthology talk reminded me of this book I read a long time ago. Not as long as I thought, since it was published in 1990, but still. A girl who was born deaf becomes earth’s representative on a planet inhabited by sentient birds who communicate by sign language, and who can see ultraviolet. Once upon a time, when WHTM was Manboobz, it was one of the main sources where I learned about privilege.
And even though I live in a country with a heavy focus on humans rights, with a Gender Identity Law like few in the world, the statistics about trans people are appalling: kicked out of home age 15, average, life expectancy 40 to 45, poverty, prostitution… you get the picture.
I can do this journey at my own pace, in an environment which is either supportive or at least not openly hostile. I have the opportunity to show what others can’t.
So it’s only fair that I do it (and I don’t expect to be perfect at that, either).

No problem! I just want to take care of my genderful buddies and make sure they don’t get hurt! It’s not something that cis people talk about much, you know?
And also, okay guys, I just did something I never though I would ever, ever do in a million years.
I just finished writing a ten page letter to my granny telling her everything. How we became multi, about our family, why I tried to jump off a bridge in 2012 and why we were homeless and why we never told anybody. She’s been asking about us for a while, and she was the one who helped us find out that the grandfather molested us. She was supportive then, and she’s been supportive as we came out, and she’s been asking a lot of questions, and I decided to try and answer them.
I haven’t decided whether I will send this letter or not. It is terrifying, but also a huge relief, to think of finally spilling all the family secrets, stopping this horrible game our family plays. To not lie anymore. To not protect them anymore. To just TELL someone in the family.
(Also, this granny is on the other side of the family. No relationship to the child-molesting clusterfuck from hell.)

This varies by city and region, in fairness. I’m sure Berlin is a lot more welcoming, for example.

Gah, I just got the notice for the final assessment session for that course I did. It’s next month, but they’ve scheduled it for 6pm. WTF? I’ve just emailed back asking if there are daytime sessions, because I am not using deserted stations and taking long train rides at night. How stupid are these people?
