I don’t usually post raw videos from the insufferable assholes I write about on this site because, well, they’re insufferable assholes, and listening to them smugly opine about shit they’re completely ignorant about is generally about as entertaining as, you know, GirlWritesWhat videos. (I know, that’s a bit circular, but I really couldn’t come up with anything more insufferable than that.)
Anyhoo, I’ve broken my rule and posted this video because the two guys who made this video — the would-be filmmaking duo of jordanowen42 and Davis Aurini — are so over-the-top in their insufferable assholism that it’s actually kind of perversely charming.
You see, these two woman-hating YouTube blabbers — the first a belligerent doofus whose apartment is nearly as unkempt as mine, the other a sort of PUA version of Anton LaVey — are pitching what they claim will be an important new documentary exposing the evil “Social Justice Warrior” agenda of evil women and traitor men like Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, and, well, I can’t remember the names of any of the men. It’s called The Sarkeesian Effect. And they want your money to fund it.
Their promised “feature-length documentary” will be a powerful work of investigative journalism that will give a voice to the voiceless — to the “silent majority” of, well, angry white dudes who spend whatever time they don’t spend playing video games posting obnoxious and abusive comments about Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn to YouTube and Reddit and eleven zillion other websites that cater to them.
In other words, this is the loudest “silent majority” I’ve ever run across.
But these are guys who love to pretend that their bold thoughts are being silenced, and PUA Anton LaVey Davis Aurini happily panders to their persecution complex:
Don’t let these people silence us. Your contribution will be a defiant strike against the degeneration and corruption that is going on in this world.
The word “degeneration” helps remind us that Aurini considers himself a part of the neo-Nazi-lite “Dark Enlightenment.”
Anyway, they argue that you should send them lots of money, because PUA Anton LaVey’s suits can’t be cheap you’ll be striking a blow for every dude who’s ever called Anita Sarkeesian a “whore” in a YouTube comment. Well, they don’t literally put it that way, but, you know, come on. That’s what they mean.
And hey, who wouldn’t trust this dude with their hard-earned cash?
I found this video hilarious from start to finish. Stick with it at least until, a little after 6 minutes in, PUA Anton LaVey Aurini lights up his second cigarette, showing what a devil-may-care attitude he has by mumbling his lines with a cigarette in his mouth as he fiddles with his lighter.
Yep, that’s the kind of quality investigative journalism you can expect from these two.
I can see the trailer now: An Anita Sarkeesian look-alike is tied to a railroad track while Davis stands over her twirling his moustaches and cackling evilly as the train bears down on them.
…she starts lecturing him on the ‘Damsel in Distress” trope, he runs away screaming with his hands over his ears…
Auntie Alias, someone needs to make that spoof trailer happen because I would watch the shit out of that. Not to mention that I think it would be a more straightforward representation of what this so-called ‘documentary’ will actually become.
Oh oh, and Phoenician’s add on is a must!!!
God, those guys. Jordan Owen is one of the 3 biggest Sarkeesian consipiracy theorists on the internet (along with MundaneMatt and InternetAristrocrat). He is pretty much Alex Jones if Alex Jones directed his hate of the government towards women and feminists. And that Kane-from-C&C-looking idiot Davis Aurini is a massive, heartiste-style white-supremacist, in addition to being a raging misogynist. If they expect anyone outside of Stormfront users and MRAs to take them seriously, they have another thing coming.
Thank god the patreon is failing miserably. 😀
I strongly suspect that this “Sarkeesian effect” that they want to prove will turn out to be “OMG women are having the temerity to play video games and talk about them in public! And then act as though they should have an equal part in the discussion!”
There was recently viral marketing playable teaser for a video game which is coming out in 2016, downloadable from the PlayStation store with the label P.T. You have to play the thing through to the end and solve the puzzle to reach the end and see the big reveal. The first person to do this was a woman with a British accent and she posted the full video of her gameplay as well as the last five minutes (spoiler warning!) which has only the ending and the reveal. The short video has a warning for a “loud, shrill, female voice” and I thought, omg why are you apologizing for having a female voice? until I read the comments. Yeah, I wish I hadn’t done that. (She has the full video on her channel which is just over 2 hours, but be warned that it is a horror game and it is horrifying.)
I don’t think anyone’s trying to silence them or anyone.
I, for one, support their freedom to say whatever they desire to.
In fact, I encourage the Men’s Rights Activists to speak as much and as freely as possible.
The rhetorical hot air the MRM puts out certainly makes them sound like potentially violent reactionaries, whether they are actually violent or not.
…And it really, really irks me that the MRM doesn’t do actual practical, on the ground stuff for guys…which I’m going to keep ranting on about, as I know MRM’s troll through here.
Hell, they don’t even have to play videogames or have an interest in the medium to do that – based on my experiences with them. Just the fact someone is pointing out sexist tropes within fictional narratives is enough to make them foaming-at-the-mouth belligerent since, at least as I’ve been lectured by them, you totally aren’t allowed to use critical thinking or analysis when it comes to entertainment. Also: you’re personally insulting them, somehow.
‘Cause, like, that isn’t completely anti-intellectual or anything!
Pretty much, Donovan.
False Equivalency is the worst thing to happen to social and political discourse these days. It constantly reinforces the fallacious notion that all sides of an issue must have legitimate concerns and thus are equally valid (even though only one of them might), which in turn enables those who are opinionated yet incredibly ignorant (purposefully or otherwise) to demand others’ acceptance for their claims even when it is totally wrong. It’s why, even when professional scientists say otherwise, there’re still people who refuse to believe climate change is real and act as if they should be applauded for their contrarianism.
It certainly wouldn’t be surprising if that same phrase inspired Nixon-supporters, most who were likely beneficiaries of various government programs in the 40’s and 50’s, to claim any safety net or employment programs were now “hand outs” when given to African-Americans. Of course, the people who do so now will conveniently claim they include anyone who uses them – but they’re intellectually dishonest or completely uninformed if they don’t think it started as a racial thing.
I remember, when arguing with someone defending Sarkeesian’s “critics”, they claimed that – instead of making her videos – she should just stop “complaining” and get into developing videogames. Because, as we all know, that’s easy as pie! Oh wait…
Of course, I found it funny that argument is used on Sarkeesian and not on the dozens of people who spend so much time not getting the point to her videos yet still complain about them for the sake of doing so. And, what, they’re spending their time productively but Sarkeesian should just shut up until she’s made a videogame? Boy, that’s really convenient and not hypocritical at all!
Awesome soundtrack. The MRM has just discovered garage band.
Did anyone else notice that they aren’t planning on bringing in “experts” until they reach $35,000/month? If you’re going to make a documentary, shouldn’t experts be something you plan to include from the start, regardless of how much money you have?
Speaking of Sarkeesian, according to her twitter, the next episode will be out tomorrow. So… yeah…
And I listened to 3/4 of that, but their complete lack of anything resembling charisma got to me. I still don’t really know what the hell they were going on about, except that they have no idea how the feature film industry works and huge-ass delusions of grandeur.
Futrelle,
I doubt it’d make much of a difference to you. These guys are critical of Sarkeesian and her supporters, so therefore they MUST be evil rapist misogynist stupid-heads, because honestly, why would anyone ever be critical of a woman with such integrity and intelligence like Sarkeesian. I mean really.
@wordsp1nner: Next episode tomorrow? While that stupid Zoe Quinn thing is still going strong? The gaming community will literally explode in a huge maelstrom of misogyny. It will be awful. D:
@M. Shiranui: You can be critical of Anita Sarkeesian’s views, arguments, examples, and videos without being a raving misogynist or using terrible arguments. Neither of these asshats have managed to do that, however.
I can’t sit through it. I can’t stand the constant switching back and forth (you’d think they’d be arsed to sit in the same room for something this big), I can’t stand the jump in camera quality, I can’t stand the guy waving round a glass of some unidentified expensive alchohol and a lit cigarette like a prop, I can’t stand the Overly. Accentuated. Points. With. Hand. Gestures. On. Each. Word, and I can’t be bothered to care what they have to say about social justice warriors taking away everyone’s free speech when they do it in such a boring way.
They’re conspiracy theorists preaching to the choir.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25o0EZiogw0 just play this nine times and you’ve got the idea.
@M. Shiranui: It’s interesting that you didn’t actually answer David’s question. What actual points did they make in that video?
@M. Shiranui:
Point out one place where anybody here called them “evil rapist misogynist stupid-heads.” If you can’t, how about criticizing with actual people and not the straw SJWs in your head.
They didn’t make any arguments. I honestly don’t know anything about their opinions from this video besides “We think Anita Sarkeesian is wrong and that it is unfair that people give her money to make her videos.” No arguments to why.
Which, yes, you can say they are preaching to the choir/begging for money from the choir, but then why so fucking long? And say what you will about Sarkeesian, she is an good video personality, and had decent production quality even before her infusion of cash. Neither of these people seem to understand that. One doesn’t even seem to understand lighting and sound, and the other one looks like a bad actor trying to play a villain for the first time and completely overdoing it.
How have they been “raving misogynists”? By virtue of being against Anita? How are their arguments terrible? Enlighten me.
Shiranui,
What the hell are their arguments? Besides Sarkeesian is wrong, and also give us money to make a feature film despite us being bad at making youtube videos.
M. Shiranui: Again, what “arguments” have they made?
Seriously, what actual fucking arguments are they making? Enlighten us.
I’m just honestly amazed they’re able to generate this level of outrage over someone pointing out sexism in video games…
I mean, is looking at pixellated t*ts really that important to your enjoyment of game play?
@idledilletante:
I managed to get half-way through that video, only because it took so long for the guy to get to the point. Quite a bit of casual misogyny in a video presuming to argue that misogyny isn’t the problem or cause.
“Oh, Damsel in Distress tropes aren’t used because people think men are strong and women are weak, it’s because heroes are always male and women get to be their prize/reason for questing.”
… You don’t understand anything about the trope, do you, video maker?
::waves:: Hi Athywren!
