I ended up with an HB count of 6.8 a while back; I had to have blood transfusions and stay in hospital for a few days.
Before I went home I was given strong supplements (Ferrous Fumarate) and told by the consultant to take them with orange juice because vitamin C helps you absorb iron. I was also told to take them on an empty stomach and avoid milk, yogurt, caffeine and carbonated drinks because they inhibit iron absorption. (Although there is some disagreement about this in some circles, it’s the advice I was given.)
I’m not an expert, but I was told to raise iron levels there were a few things that could help: eating meat, green vegetables and fruit high in vitamin C, and drinking beetroot juice and orange juice.
Other than that you need to solve the underlying problem, if possible, and take your supplements.
Just told Mr M about this and he couldn’t believe that this wanker was more worried that bruises would make him look bad than about the health of his partner. He then got out my Ferrous Fumarate and told me to take them, he’s such a nag. 🙂
My guess is he’s seen some anonymous feminist discussion on the web about abusive sexual situations, where you might be uncomfortable calling what happened to you “rape”, but it wasn’t quite consensual either, you just ended up being in a situation where you felt sucking dick was really really expected of you and you didn’t feel comfortable saying “no” and you ended up doing it despite not really wanting to. You know, THAT kind of discussion, which is really important to have now and then. He’s read something like that, and his reaction was just “oh women can’t take responsibility for anything they do, they can’t take responsibility for sucking dick, they just tell these long ridiculous stories about how they ended up in a “dick sucking situation”.”
Chocolate does soothe my out of control woman emotions. That’s probably why it was invented. If I am not fed chocolate during my period I am likely to ragefully take out my tampon and throw it at innocent men folk who are merely trying to train me to behave appropriately.

I have read really similar arguments (with different conclusions) about political liberals. Liberals are bad because they don’t understand personal responsibility! They’re always talking about larger trends and the reasons why people do things! They care about feelings!
Useful, because I learned in undergrad, one of the key ways to tell an argument is bullshit is if it is applied with minimal changes to two totally different things.
I guess it’s like, if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If you have no maturity, an ego problem, and the inability to focus on anything larger than the individual level, everything looks like a threat to personal liberty.

Yup, cravings are weird, mine were ice, cigars and salt and vinegar crisps. (Like waking husband up in the night to drive you to the shops type cravings.)
I actually dated a guy once who was like this in high school — not like the OP but like he describes women. He was apparently unable to regulate his own hunger or tiredness and when he got hungry or tired he would become miserable and start whining about everything. I took to carrying snacks for him whenever we went out.
Let me just say that’s not a fun model of relationship.

Uh, no, that’s not how that works. Nobody has to take responsibility for the actions of another adult. That adult is the person who is responsible for their actions, regardless of if they believe it to be so or not. And if someone isn’t taking responsibility for their actions, the answer isn’t to treat them as children – in fact, you are advocating for taking away the agency of women by saying so. If women don’t have agency to begin with and by treating them like children they will never get said agency, then when is that vicious cycle supposed to stop? Basically, he’s advocating against women having any agency whatsoever so that he has all the control in a relationship.
But I guess that’s just cosmic patriarchy and my feels talking.
Sarcasm aside – far, far aside – this is pretty revealing.
* First, note the paterinal, “helpful” approach. This is an attempt to make something look appropriate and almost beneficial.
* At the same time, note it’s wrapped around the utterly bizarre idea that women are all basically retarded – no other way to put it actually.
* Finally, there’s this assumption of maturity. On the part of men who spin elaborate theories about why half the human race is basically hopelessly immature in a “club” named for a plot device in an SF film.
