How stupid do you have to be to actually believe the following nonsense? Not just regular stupid. Men’s Rights stupid.
Heck, this is even stupid by normal Men’s Rights standards. It made me think of this line from Ruthless People.
Now, horqth could very well be a troll. His account is brand new, and, I mean, this is just amazingly dumb. But here’s the thing: his comments are being treated as if they are completely reasonable by the Men’s Rights subreddit. I noticed only a couple of mostly ignored comments out of more than 100 even raising the possiblity that he was a troll.
Not only has his post gotten dozens of upvotes, but in the comments there are numerous other Men’s Rights Redditors — not trolls — who’ve actually managed to outdo him in the sheer ridiculousness of their opinions. And they’re getting upvotes too.
Milessycamore seemed to suggest that horqth had understated the degree to which men were being victimized in both places, and more than 200 Redditors agreed:
Saxonjf thought it would be nice if more women would act like these strippers and make men feel “important special.”
Itchybrain, putting his economist hat on, suggested that the root of the problem was the massive over-valuation of women:
So how did the ladies get so overvalued in the first place? Blame the government and all that darn welfare. Responding to one contrarian Men’s Righster who suggested — get this! — that women are appropriately valued — FloranHunter laid down this truth bomb, by which I mean a bunch of complete and utter crap:
If only we could return to the good old days, when women would starve unless they were super nice to unattractive dudes who pestered them in bars!
Lawtonfogle also has no problem with the idea of men being valued for their money; he just wants to get more bang(s) for the buck.
I give up.
I’d run like my feet were on fire and my ass was catching.
Same here.
Thinking it over, I am finding fewer and fewer sites these days where it feels possible to interact with people without running into rampant asshattery. If it’s not MRAs or wingnut denialists or Randy glibertarians…
Pretty much. This is the only site I frequent.
Speaking of which, do you do craft stuff, gillyrosebee, and if so, are you on Ravelry? We started a Manboobz group there the other day.
I’m not on Ravelry at the moment (mostly because I lost my login info and I’m not sure I still have access to that email) but I suppose I could be. I used to knit constantly, and do a fair amount of other crafty typed things before I got all uppity and decided to start a business. Now I’m lucky if I have time to read the news!
Now that’s funny timing – their tip of the day thingy yesterday was about old emails and lost passwords. 🙂
I consider myself lucky when I don’t read/hear the news. I’m too far from the capital to throw rocks at the PM and hope they’ll get him.
I have tended to use fuckwit, as I don’t think that has any psychiatric association. I steer well clear of m*r*n because of the IQ category connotations.
FWIW, the term “idiot” appears to have only been used for one classification system for the Stanford-Binet test: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_classification so it wasn’t an original classification category, nor would it have been in use worldwide.
I’ve been cheating on this site with /r/againstmensrights, even though it definitely isn’t as good on the ableist stuff — but it’s easier to deal with when I only have my phone. The WordPress app on my phone is terrible.
But even if I am cheating, this site is my favorite.
I think polyblogary is permissable. I hope you took precautions. 😉
cloudiah, you, you, hussy, you!
I was hoping you’d all be willing to have an open relationship, but I really should have checked first. XD
Was it the scented fucking candles that temporarily drove you away, or was it the penguin whores?
Those are the things that keep me coming back!
I read r/TheBluePill for awhile, the regular posters are hoot, but I stopped reading because I found it triggering. Before that, I childishly prided myself as being a sardonic badass that’s tough and unflappable when it came to disturbing writing. One thread on joys of “courting” teens on Reddit blew up that bullshit delusion about myself.
I’m going to paraphrase the post that took me down solely to get it off my chest because it’s really kind of haunted me, but first MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING (SEXUAL PREDATOR/ REALLY DEPRESSING).
One poster was saying it’s great to have friends with teen daughters, how he’s lost some friendships because he took advantage of his “access”, but it was worth it. Then he LOL’d and I realized I couldn’t buy a gun and shoot him in the face, so I decided to actively avoid those types of threads.
Sorry about the depressing off-topic post, but this has stuck with me for a while. R/MR doesn’t have anything on the sludge on r/TRP.
Brooked, all the contact- or non-contact hugs, from me, other people, puppies/kittens — or whatever you find comforting. Argh.
Much appreciated, Cloudiah.
Seconded, Brooked – plus some free YAOWWWs from Fribbie, who seems to have a lot to spare.
This is exactly why I left LiveJournal’s sf_drama community: Somebody was always getting jumped on for something, and by the end I was afraid to ever comment in case I got dogpiled again. I’ll cop to being as much of an outrage addict as anyone else on that community, but of course riding the tiger is only fun until the tiger turns on you.
Don’t even get me started on Shakesville…
OMG “polyblogary”! Kiwi girl ftw!
While we’re clearing the air, I … I’ve been seeing Wonkette behind your backs.
One thousand apologies for basically abandoning a conversation that I started, but I haven’t been able to find enough time to devote to a proper reply. I will definitely give my two cents when I get the chance, hopefully today. Also, I just watt to say that I appreciate all of your replies, and the discussion has helped me sort through my own view a bit better.
And I’ve been Bloggers with Benefits at Pharyngula but I don’t read the comments much.
Ugh, Brooked, that is horrible and you have my sympathy. Every time I think I have seen the worst of what is out there, I seem to discover a new pocket of vileness…
ps – Falconer? I, too, have been spending meaningful time with Wonkette…
Ugh, sorry to her that, Brooked. 🙁
Except right now, something on the Wonkette site makes my browser sad.
