LBT: My mom fell off a curb in Ottawa and dislocated her elbow a few years back. They took her with no fuss, and it cost maybe 50 bucks when it was all done.

Seconding, like, everyone. What the reason for the exorcism?
Apparently, some of my co-workers think we have a demon…….I was kinda startled to find that they believe that kinda stuff too…..
They see shadows at work or something.
I know I’m coming at this from the angles of not being in a religiously-obsessed and not-free-at-all country, plus my own beliefs, so this might be all wrong, but – would it help to think of the exorcism as something done for the psychological comfort of the workers who think there’s a demon? Like an OH&S thing – ergonomic furniture for the mind, as it were.
I suppose. If it makes them feel better…..I just worry that it isn’t gonna help. I guess we will see. Apparently, it is happening on friday.

Does HR know about this? I’m usually not a fan of them, but this exorcism could be offensive to enough people so they should get a heads up. That’s assuming you have HR or are a big enough company to have certain labor laws pertain.
We have HR. And I’m sure the number is somewhere in the office, but I kinda feel awkward complaining because he went out of his way to talk to me about it. However, since I know there are at least 2 more co-workers who are not into this I don’t know if I have an obligation to say something. The exorcism is only happening at our facility and therefore only impacts like 22 people.
I dunno… I think watching a workplace exorcism would be kinda fascinating. But as kitteh said, I’m coming from a non-religously obsessed country so there isn’t the same sort of cultural baggage (and I am recovered from my catholic upbringing).
Ally – so, so glad you’re ok! It’s not easy to set boundaries with someone, esp a family member, so be gentle with yourself – you’re doing the right thing for you.
People I haven’t mentioned by name who need support or good wishes or good things – enormous hugs if you want them.
Mushrooms – portobellos make really good vehicles for other things! I just saw a recipe for a portobello cap topped with salsa, pine nuts and parmesan, and then popped under the broiler. Haven’t tried it, but it sounds gooooood.

Ok – needing advice, but not sure how to make a very long story short. Will try. Basically…
My 14-yr-old niece (N14) is having trouble with her mum, my BIL’s ex. BIL is not her biological father but has been acting as her father since she was 3. BIL has a son with his ex and sees both kids on a regular basis (when the mum isn’t trying to keep him away from them, anyway – she goes in spurts)
N14 told us a bunch of stuff over xmas holidays, including physical abuse, severe emotional abuse. One of the least disturbing things was that she’d been without a bed since the summer and sleeping on the floor. N14 spent the summer with BIL and grandparents, had a job, made her own $$… her mum (we suspect) was upset by this and punished her by letting the cat piss on her bed all summer to the point it got moldy and rotted. (The mum does things like this… and takes her money, clothes we buy her, etc. She is very toxic, we have our theories as to why)
N14 has been cutting. BIL is a counsellor and hooked her up with a counsellor where she lives – trying to keep it a secret from her mum (who had told her she was going to send her to the ‘looney bin’ and medicate her), but mum found out and is now denying all access to N14.
I don’t even know really what I’m asking here – I guess how to best support N14 from a distance. She has all my numbers, we stay in touch on FB, but I don’t know what I can do (if anything). I know when I was suffering at her age, just knowing ppl out there loved me and thought I was worth it would have helped… but I don’t know, is that enough??
Ok, sorry for the novella. Just figured if any ppl out there would have some insight on this, it would be you wonderful people.
Crumbs, Tracy, that’s horrible. I wish I had any ideas, but my only thought is to wish BiL had custody (extremely unlikely, I know, being her stepfather). π
Re the exorcism – cultural baggage, that’s the word for it. ::nods::
Say, melody, if it turns out to be Basement Cat in your workplace, tell her she’s welcome here. I’ve said for ages we need a shop cat, and Basement Cat could turn her evil powers on stupid customers and head office.
I’m happy everytime you link to that picture π I don’t know why. It’s just awesome.
Ps: got to the eyedoctor, apparently I have a some kind of dry eye thing, nothing terrible. I got prescription drops to take. :3
@tracy
I really don’t have any good advice, sorry π I think knowing people out there love her will help, and I don’t know any other ways to help support her.
Ditto, LBT!

Melody: why are they exorcising your office?
Woooow. Other people’s healthcare is weird.

I’ve seen that on tumblr with the caption: I made these.
Awww tiny baby kittieees!
… I think that’s Basement Cat with her latest demons.

I think it is just good that n14 knows that you are there as a support.
One of my main coping skills for cutting is that I know I can text my friend when I feel like cutting. It doesn’t always work, but it certainly helps.

@Tracy
Document the abuse and contact a social worker and/or lawyer- maybe they would know a way to help.
Also have some pretty kitties:

OMG if we have a demon it HAS to demon cat.
Because cats like me. And therefore that must be why I am never bugged by our “demon”
Don’t tell the others that, Melody! They’ll want to exorcise you.
(only half joking)
@melody
Maybe one of these?

Heheh it shows you are a true subject of the Furrinati, Marie! You can save the pic to your computer if you like. π
Dry eye’s a pest, but at least there are plenty of drops to take for it.
