Although nobody in this system is any use at sewing, the kids have gotten into needle-felting! They took a little class yesterday and had a lot of fun stabbing wool with needles.
RE: chimisaur
It’s annoying. I swear, bras are the biggest racket I’ve ever heard of.
RE: emilygoddess
does anyone else have trouble finding knee-high boots that actually fit over their calves?
YES. Shit, I have trouble finding any boots higher than the ankle that’ll fit over my calves–and sometimes, my ankles baffle them too. (Which is bizarre, since seriously, guys, I’m pretty skinny, what the hell do bigger folks do?) I swear, the fuckers are made entirely for twiggy hipster girls with all the curves of a block of wood. (There’s nothing wrong with them. There IS something wrong with the industry who acts like they’re the norm.)

I’ve not done felting but that does sound like fun.
I am taking a class in spinning when I’m in holiday in June – it turned out the woman I’m renting a cottage from gives spinning classes & doesn’t mind that I’m a complete novice. So then I’ll be a SPINSTER 😉
So not only did the war of independence mean that the US decided it would use the same crochet term to mean a slightly different stitch (e.g. US single crochet = Brit double crochet), it also means the popular yarn weight is different. Oh, and knitting needle and crochet sizes use a different system as well! Grrr!
Re knitting, I use the throw method and normally go into the front of the stitch. I’m eyeing up a video to learn all types of different knitting, including the Norwegian method(???). I’m much faster with knitting the Continental method when doing knit, but I can’t get my angle right to use purl properly. And I haven’t tried it with anything like cables or fair isle.

Cables and lace are fun! Fair isle and other colorwork makes my knitting wrinkly and me sad, though I know others with the exact opposite predicament, so I suppose it’s a preference thing. I use the throw method as well, I tried Continental once and it drove me nuts (perhaps being left-handed played into that a bit?) so I’m sticking with throw forever. I’m fast enough for a hobby in any case.

Also, please let me know what tv shows you really like and I will make sure I don’t like them. Me *really* liking a tv show guarantees its cancellation (/sob Arrested Development /sob)
If you liked Arrested Development, I highly recommend Community. It’s got a similar style of hidden jokes and callbacks. I also recommend it to anyone who’s ever wasted too much time on TVTropes, as they frequently do genre-homage episodes.
It’s already been cancelled twice (and it’s still going), so I doubt you could make it any worse!
@cloudiah, I never get tired of that story. I’ll have to remember that attitude next time I get depressed while I’m clothes shopping.
@Kittehs, it looks like Y.So brand isn’t available in North America.
@Kiwi Girl, DK is definitely a size in the US, but maybe it’s a different size? That wouldn’t surprise me.
@chimisaur and anyone else, if you get a Ravelry friend request from emgoddess, it’s me 🙂
AIT – woo yeah, drop me a line! You can get me at frenchqueen 13 at gmail.com.
🙂
(I love getting emails from manboobzers.)
chimisaur – you can friend me on Ravelry! Here’s my profile.
I’m not on there nearly as much as here but I do check in fairly often.
I wonder if we should start a Manboobz group there?
I get all my patterns there now, ‘cos I can get free ones. What I like is having the advanced search thingy, makes it easy to narrow down what I’m looking for.

emilygoddess – well that’s a pain! I wouldn’t have expected that (Y.So boots not being available in the US).
p.s. kittehs, or someone, can you remind me what that Firefox editing tool is — I thought maybe we should add it to the Welcome Package. In fact, anyone who knows can just leave it as a comment there if you want.

Awesome! Thanks! You’ll be getting gmail from a variety of shave ice.
auggziliary:
I honestly couldn’t tell you right off what the risks involved are, but I can tell you that folks who overuse protein powders and such are only going to gain weight, and not muscle weight. Most of that supplement stuff in general is a no go for me, but I am a single study. And you didn’t even mention stuff like that, so I’m mostly rambling. So, have conveniently positioned cat in a bag.
Just wondering, is it possible to eat too much protein?
I figure it’s possible to eat too much of ANYTHING.
I can’t think of many healthy foods that don’t have protein, besides produce.
O_o Are you on some kind of special diet or have a bunch of intolerances or something? I’m on a fairly strict food plan for ED recovery, and I have TROUBLE keeping my required protein up. I mostly eat, yes, produce, and my grains usually come from cereal (Cheerios!), wheat bread, pastas/couscous, and rice. Those are all perfectly healthy to eat!
(For those who are curious, my proteins mostly come from milk, yogurt, cheese, edamame, and since moving here, my roommates have been feeding me meat but I’m trying to stop.)
Wow. That’s pretty low-carb there. Are there health reasons for that? Like, everyone has different dietary needs, but you’re describing a diet that sounds pretty high-protein and low-carb.
auggziliary: Have you considered dark chocolate instead of the protein bars? 72% cacao chocolate has less sugar than the common candy bar, and has some health benefits to boot.
Btw, thanks for the health advice earlier. I did wind up getting the elliptical at a massive discount, and it’s been working great for me. I’m up to 30 minutes a day and holding, and I’ve only missed one day since I started.
Okay, like I said, everyone’s needs are different, but here is the plan I’m on, which is strict enough to keep me honest but flexible enough to give me some leeway. Every day, I need to eat:
3 servings of fruit (or 2, which I do)
3 servings of veg
3 servings of protein
3 servings of fat (not gonna lie, I usually skip this one, or at least don’t check for it)
6 servings of carbs
I have a big honking list of various examples of these serving sizes, and what counts as what, but I usually use what’s on the box, or now that I’m a little steadier on my brainhealth, what feels right to me.
Also, sure, whole grains have protein… but under my plan, they count as carbs. And I eat pasta and rice that aren’t as high in protein.
Happily, most of the health problems with protein (cholesterol, gaining weight, etc) are mostly applicable to meat proteins, so in that respect I think you’re in the clear, auggz.
One thing you should consider is getting complete protein. Grain + dairy/legumes = complete protein. To much of the latter (or the former) means that you won’t be getting all the amino acids you need, which also inhibits your ability to metabolize the protein that you are eating.
I heard that the complete protein thing was bullshit. Anyone else know anything about this? (Not that it’s a concern of mine right now, but the kids are vege and I’d like to go vege myself, so…)
RE: auggzliary
Nuts. Butter. Peanut butter. Crap like that. Like I said, I tend to skip it. (Probably not the best idea, but I figure I get enough fat from yogurt and whole milk and shit.)
Cool. They should be pretty easy to find these days; all the coffee shops in my area carry it in one form or another. So do the grocery stores, health stores, drug stores, Bulk Barn…
LBT: Not bullshit, but tends to be overblown by anti-vegans.
As long as you get enough of the nine essential proteins in your diet (the ones your body can’t create itself), you’re golden, and most of the complete ones are common now. Lentils+grains (hell, even a peanut-butter sandwich) will give you the complete proteins you need, as will chia, soy, quinoa, and hempseed.
Argenti You can add me to the 90% club too. I prefer my chocolate in the 72% range, but every once in a while, I’ll grab a little piece of uncut stuff. 😀
YMMV but I find that dark chocolate starts getting bitter around 82~85% — it needs some sugar to be edible.
HERESY. The less sugar is in it, the less ADULTERATED it is. Admittedly, I don’t care for the texture of raw cacao, but oh man, I ASPIRE to the mythical 99% bar. *salivates*

Okay, thanks. I don’t think that’ll be a problem, since I never plan on going vegan.

Re worsted weight patterns, basically any (non-thread, non-sock) garment patterns I buy from http://www.anniescatalog.com/ or download from http://www.lionbrand.com/ or are in http://www.interweavestore.com/crochet or any other American magazine/crochet book are pretty much all worsted weight.
OTOH, most of my British-sourced patterns are DK.
So not only did the war of independence mean that the US decided it would use the same crochet term to mean a slightly different stitch (e.g. US single crochet = Brit double crochet), it also means the popular yarn weight is different. The main risk would be spending a lot of extra money on expensive protein foods that provide no additional nutritive value, I think.
Problems associated with too much protein.

Well auggz, you can join the exclusive club that so far has one member — my brother. It’s called “people who can stomach 90% dark chocolate”.
Avocados…I think Pecunium and I agreed that they’re icky.
I like avocado too, usually, but after I got a bunch of bad ones in a row, I kinda got turned off them. And they go off so QUICKLY too…
