I should also mention that I’m 19, which is another reason I feel intimidated by other, more likely older developers with decent experience. X_X Sometimes I feel like I don’t stand a chance.
@Ally: From my experience, being non-white really isn’t a problem in programming environments. Programmers also tend to be very liberal as a whole (though there are a fair share of fedora’d neckbeards among them).
And even though I have graduated, I still find myself intimidated by older devs at times. It doesn’t much go away, but it helps to think of them as mentors, not rivals. Mainly because they won’t be rivals. They will be applying for senior positions, not the basic development positions you will be looking for when you graduate. 🙂
Have you looked at developing for smart phones too Ally? Android uses Java and is free to develop for. The styling side has the same kind of logic as CSS. I’m sure the people here could brainstorm some awesome manboobz related app ideas. 🙂
And yeah, I hated bootstrap.. well – if you need to throw a site prototype together really fast I can see its uses. That’s what it was built for really. But if you need to do something customer facing, just no.

Ally — once you get the basics of CSS down, it gets easier, and even fun. One of my little tricks is wrapping things in spans and divs with classes applied to be sure I can easily target (and position) what I want to target. Only shortcuts though are doing things that take advantage of the casanding part and the short cuts like being able to set border width, color and style with one line.

In a thread where people are kvetching about their rough 2013, is it rude to say the opposite? I don’t wanna stomp on anyone’s feelings.
It felt special to me (the year), since my husband and younger son are both Snakes. This was definitely a year with many twists and turns. Now we have a Horse year. Also, my husband’s cancer appears to be in remission, which is really quite nice. He may qualify for MediCal, which would make three out of four family members. Socialism has been very very good for our family. Also, older son has his first girlfriend! She lives eight hours away by car, which neither of them has, which is a great relief. Can’t wait to see what exciting things ’14 will bring.

Happy new years all! I’m hoping for a better 2014 with less depression, no friends having heart attacks, and no car accidents. My NYE was spent drinking white wine, watching Community, making lasagna and cupcakes with a friend I hardly get to see. Next year I am hoping to distract depression with crafting, which has been working during the latter portion of 2013 (and had the added bonus of handmade gifts for everyone on my Christmas list). I wish everyone an awesome 2014 and I’m glad this blog is here daily resorting my faith in humanity.
