Happy New Year!
My first New Year’s resolution is to finish up my slightly belated Big Year End Review of Manosphere Greatness in 2013. But in the meantime, enjoy this cat, and this open thread.

Happy New Year! I can’t say I’m too sorry to see 2013 go, considering it was a pretty bad year for me…
Regardless of whether you had a good or bad year, I hope everyone here has a better 2014!
Yay, 2014’s coming soon! Several hours left to go here (not stating how much, no need for MRAs to figure out my timezone, heh.)
Love that cat! Looking forward to remembering to write 2014 on checks and notes for kids absences! And how old I am! (I use my fingers and a calculator LOL)
Happy new year!
Happy New Year, everybody.
@entropistanon: I’m sorry that you had such a bad year this year. 🙁
I hope 2014 is better for you, though. 🙂
Fuck 2013. One of the most stressful years of my life. I really hope things get much better in 2014. My current New Years resolutions are:
1. Start my transition
2. Build my credentials so that I can start working as a freelance programmer
3. Try to not hate myself all the damn time
It’ll definitely be a life-changing year – for better or for worse.
Also, Happy New Year! It’s not 2014 here yet, but it will be in about 7 hours.
Ask for an open thread and ye shall receive!
My kitty Bobbie is going on morning TV. She wants to know what she should wear for all the people waiting at dentists’ offices.
Well, that cat does not look happy at all. XD
The new year is still a long way off for me. Not sure how I feel about 2013 yet, as it was pretty crap for games and movies (but decent enough for music, I feel. Great albums from Nails, Deafheaven, Carcass, Black Sabbath, and Voivod? That’ll do pig. That’ll do.). Also, the second half of the year did not go nearly as well for me as the first (which went fantastically).
Ah well. Here is to a new year, and a fresh start! 😀
@Ally: One of the best ways to build cred as a programmer is to work on open-source projects. Not joking, I have been told straight up by many in the industry that open-source looks amazing on a resume.
2013 sucked; I’ll be glad to see the back of it. Happy New Year everyone!
Yay! Another fellow Sabbath fan! ^_^
I don’t know why so many people disliked the album 13. My favorite Sabbath will always be the early days with Ozzy and Dio, but I really liked the songs on 13.
@Ally S
Great resolutions! My transition was the best thing I ever did for me and I hope it is for you as well.
@BreakfastMan
Yeah, that’s what I’ve heard. Thanks for the reminder.
I have so much to learn, though. X_X Right now I’m in the process of getting more familiar with JavaScript, XML, CSS, jQuery, and Ajax. I might try to learn how to work with WordPress as well.
@Ally: I think one of the main reasons so many people disliked 13 was because of the hype. I remember how everyone was hyped when they announced that they were making a new album with the classic lineup. Then they released all those teasers of the new songs that got everyone more hype. I think at that point, the hype was at unsustainable levels for most sabbath fans, and the album was going to be a let-down for most no matter what, simply because it couldn’t live up to what they had in their heads.
Still, I think when people look back at it a couple years from now with fresh ears, it will be considered the best album since Mob Rules. 😀
Yeah, I’m looking forward to kicking 2013 in the arse as it goes through the door… hugs for anyone who wants them. I don’t remember a time when the depression sat on me as heavily as it has this year, or a time when I spent so much time consciously talking myself out of suicide.
@Ally: Javascript isn’t that hard to learn. It is basically like Java, but more for web-pages. And if you have familiarity with HTML, learning XML should be easy. jQuery and Ajax are difficult to comprehend at first, but they become MUCH easier when you get the basics down. CSS is probably the most difficult out of all of those to learn, I think. I had difficulties with that one myself. But, there are a number of good tutorials and test areas online to help with that. And, of course, StackOverflow. XD
@alternatesteve90: Granted, the year could have been much worse, but I’m hoping for at least steady full time employment this year.
@Ally S: Great resolutions, and I’ll be rooting for you!
@gillyrosebee: I’ll take some hugs, and offer some back to you.
This has been a pretty terrible year for me too… but it’s been about actually addressing instead of running from issues that have been plaguing me for a long time. 2014 is looking up – finally I will be graduating and on to bigger things!
Oh, I have experience with both JS and Java, so I understand the similarities. I’ve noticed that JS is much easier to work with than Java, especially for regular expressions. The best part of JS to me is its nice OOP architecture. And I don’t have to use that terribly clunky ArrayList class just so I can have arrays that can change in size.
I’ve also had some experience with jQuery, which is lovely. What intimidates me the most is Ajax, since I have so little experience with server side stuff. The only real experience I’ve had with web applications in which I’ve actually had to do server side stuff was when I was working on a Ruby on Rails project in my previous job. And that was a mess without Ajax. X_X
I’ve found that Derek Banas’ YouTube channel is a fabulous source for learning coding. I was watching his CSS tutorial videos last night and they were fantastic.
Aw I haven’t been on this site long but happy new year everyone! I like the kitty <3 for some reason the cat looks of utter self importance (the quirks of being cat haha)
@Ally: If you have some experience with jQuery, you really shouldn’t be so intimidated by Ajax, as they are quite similar. A lot of the stuff you can do with jQuery, you can do with Ajax as well, it is just that the syntax is different. Once you get used to the syntax differences, it is easy to work with both, at least for me.
Happy New Year, everyone!
My 2013 was pretty good, overall, and I hope 2014 is better.
katz, Bobbie is going on telly? Tell us moar!
Joining the ranks of those who are pretty much kicking the ass of 2013 as it goes out the door. Happy New Year to all, and best wishes for a much better 2014. At least a lot more USians will have health insurance.
Happy New Year!
I wish I could get one of the cats to wear a party hat, but I like not needing stitches.
Happy Gregorian New Year everyone, enjoy your 2014, even if it is about 3760 years late.
