As the worms turn: Men's Rights subreddit mod now defends spamming Occidental College with false rape reports

Oh, Men’s Rightsers, can you just make up your minds? Only a couple of days after blaming trolls for the spamming of Occidental College’s rape reporting site with false accusations, rather than acknowledging it as the work of Men’s Rightsers in his own subreddit who were proudly encouraging and taking credit for it themselves, Men’s Rights subreddit mod sillymod is now defending the false rape reporting as “unpopular” but thought-provoking activism.

sillymod 6 points 7 hours ago (13|7) First you have to believe that we did something wrong in order to want to get our reputation back. Sometimes people fighting for a cause are going to do something that is unpopular in order to make a statement. I don't think we do need to get our reputation back. I think the act stands for itself, and it will get people to stop and think. permalink source save give gold hide child comments [–]TheIdesOfLight [+20] 15 points 4 hours ago (22|7) So I guess that whole "We were trolled"/"It was SRS!" bullshit is off the table? You can't pass the buck and convince yourselves everyone else is guilty but you and now it's become an act of bravery? Wow. Yeah, watching you flip flop on this for the past three days has been both alarming and rewarding. You didn't make any kind of statement, Sillymod. The entire internet and media is sneering at you and you still can't just say WE DID A TERRIBLE THING. PERHAPS WE SHOULD REFLECT ON IT AS A WHOLE. permalink source save parent give gold [–]ninioquiroz 6 points 3 hours ago (12|6) No, because that would require a level of maturity and self-awareness that this "movement" clearly lacks. But, does anybody else think feminists are to blame for all the world's problems?

This whole exchange is worth reading — it continues on for a number of comments beyond this, with sillymod’s rationalizations becoming increasingly baroque. It’s extremely rare to see critical remarks like those from TheIdesOfLight actually get upvoted in the Men’s Rights subreddit. The Occidental College fiasco has divided the Men’s Rights subreddit like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Some are appalled by it; others are digging in their heels.

Speaking of which, here’s former subreddit mod Celda defending the false rape reports in much more straightforward terms than sillymod:

Celda [-1] 5 points 18 hours ago (9|4) I agree that the subreddit deserves some responsibility for that. But - there was nothing wrong with those actions. I saw the news articles in which it says they were spammed with hundreds of reports, of being raped by fictional characters, accusing the staff of the Dean's Office (the form is run by the Dean's Office), etc. Those reports are non-harmful - and the goal of shutting down the online form is quite a laudable one. I am actually quite disgusted by the number of people who are defending the existence of an anonymous online form intended for reporting people as rapists.

Elsewhere, Celda has called the false reporting “quite moral and laudable.”

Thanks to the AgainstMensRights subreddit — which, again, is not actually against rights for men, but against the reactionary clusterfuck that is the Men’s Rights movement — for keeping close track on all this.

Yep. They will stop and think. But I don’t believe the conclusion they will reach is what you are expecting.

This is actually really heartening to watch. Previously they’ve always circled the wagons and gotten even more defensive any time anyone did anything bad, but this time multiple actual members of the movement are pushing back and saying that what they did was indeed wrong with no mitigating factors. It gives one hope.

Good for the critics. I’m glad some of them are stepping up and saying this is wrong.

I am still amazed at the fact that they can’t understand that this style of form can actually make male rape victims to come forward.
They are hurting a lot of men in the process. Should we draw to them so they might get it?

I wonder if it’s the actual behavior or the disgusted public response to it that’s prompting some MRAs to reevaluate.

I wonder who they blame when their car doesn’t start.

Feminists. Feminists hate cars and machines which are male things. The evil matriarchy target the cars of these oppressed men.

The form can help the college find trends in sexual victimization against men, who are less likely to report to the authorities than women people. With the help of that information, they can analyze the trends to determine whether their efforts to help male victims are helping. Moreover, this form will empower victims of female-on-male sexual victimization; the female perpetrators will be warned to not repeat the offense again, should the accusations be true.

Therefore, the folks at r/MensRights are actually making it more difficult for the college to determine the prevalence of sexual victimization against men. And by implication, they are marginalizing the people they claim to support. They find it more important to spam an anonymous report form because of the small possibility that people can abuse it.

Disgusting.

Can someone please send these nutcases where they have no access to technology? Please. I am tired of seeing their whines of being victims, while they go out of their way to prevent real victims from getting the help they need. Geez. This era will be remembered as the era of whiny misogynist men who never learned to pull up their big boy pants.

I really don’t think it has anything to do with the potential for the form to be abused, they just object to the idea that colleges care whether or not their students are raped in general.

One friend of mine is a victim of female-on-male rape. He always felt embarrassed about it and when he told a close friend the friend, a guy, was all like “wow, you are so lucky! come on! she is hot! don’t tell me you didn’t like it”. He decided never to talk about it again until one day I brought the subject up and he opened up to me about it. He said that this really has disturbed the way he sees sex and intimacy.

It makes me very angry when I see that MRAs only use a case of my friend to bash feminism and women. “Women are evil too”. As if feminists think that women are angels or something. They cannot comprehend that male victims of rape, being male-on-male or female-on-male, don’t report because of the way our repressive patriarchal system is!

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but apparently this particular college is so terrible at dealing with sexual assault that sometimes as punishment they make a rapist write a fucking five page book report:

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/12/20/3093761/mens-rights-occidental/#

Of all places to be freaking out about false reports, they chose this one.

I’m glad they are getting some mainstream hate here. They deserve all the scorn they get and more.

Consistency is a feminist plot to take over the world and establish female supremacy! That’s why sillymod has been flailing all over the place!

I’m glad that people are now standing up and saying “hey, what the fuck?”.

It really fucking sucks to see many of the MRAs double down on their incredibly fucked up bullshit…..but then again, I’ll have to agree with Katz; there does seem to be a silver lining to all this as now more and more of their less jerkish members are saying, “OK, this is enough for me.” and questioning the actions of their fellows.

@Ally S: I agree with you 100%. But sadly, many of these jerks & losers(is it okay to use this term, btw?) are too caught up in their own ass-backwards misogynist bullshittery to even *consider* that their actions are hurting men, too.

It looks like this college has consistantly handled rape cases so poorly that students set up a tumblr blog to talk about it, among other things. The anonymous form was part of a student-led campaign to get the college to address the issue. It’s absolutely disgusting how MRA’s sabotaged it.

The second one, watch the bottom left at ~0:25, one of the tiny ones passes right along the bottom edge. Sorry about the shit quality on that one, trying to film cories that are this big ___ is hard.

As far as I understood this form is for anyone male or female to file a report. MRA’s claim there are more men who get raped than women. MRA’s claim they care deeply about male victims of rape and sexual assaults. MRA’s go berserk and attack the college anonymous reporting form.

@Diana That’s classic MRA logic for you. Men are the only logical gender, don’t you know?
