Let’s say you wake up one morning and you decide, for some reason, that you’d like to make it your goal for the day to get yourself banned from the Men’s Rights subreddit.
If you’re a feminist, it’s not hard. I managed to get myself banned there some time ago and all I had to do was … well, I’m not exactly sure what it was I did. Actually, I’m pretty sure I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, Reddit-wise, other than argue with the regulars there. It’s possible I may have engaged in some light sarcasm. So maybe try that.
If, on the other hand, you hate women, all you have to do is … well, again, I’m not sure. Because earlier today, as one friend of Man Boobz pointed out on the Against Men’s Rights subreddit, a dislikeable fellow who calls himself sciencegod posted an elaborate, graphic torture fantasy to the Men’s Rights subreddit. I’m posting it below as a thumbnail; click to see it full size, but TRIGGER WARNING because it’s very graphic.
It got some downvotes, and the mods deleted the comment. But it didn’t occur to any of the mods, evidently, to actually ban this user from the Men’s Rights subreddit.
Because obviously anything he might ever have to say on the subject of Men’s Rights is much more worthwhile than anything I might ever have to say on the subject.
I asked the mods why they felt it necessary to ban me when they wouldn’t ban someone like sciencegod, and here’s the response I got back:
This is pretty much the answer I get whenever I ask them anything. I could ask them if they thought the sky was blue and they’d send me the same response and probably put something in the sidebar saying the sky was red.
Ironically, elsewhere in the Men’s Rights subreddit today I learned this:
Huh. Where on earth might I have gotten the impression that there are MRAs who hate women?
Oops. There’s that sarcasm again. When will I ever learn?
They deleted it so that’s good enough. If he keeps writing stuff like that then he’d probably get banned. Besides, at least you and that guy got to comment. Look at some feminist websites like Geek Feminism or Feministing, they don’t even approve your comment unless it’s in agreement with their equality delusions.
“Because obviously anything he might ever have to say on the subject of Men’s Rights is much more worthwhile than anything I might ever have to say on the subject.”
That could very well be true, you know.
@DrMrsTheMonarch I want to marry your nym.
@Kittehs
How come the trolls are still here? Someone obviously missed Obsidian Files, Truthy, and the time Tom Martin was allowed to come back to talk about his “documentary”.
@Death&Destruction.
No u!
Speaking of “no u”, AVFM also screens disagreeing comments and bans dissenters regularly. I’m sure you’ll be running off to yell at them any minute now.
Anyway, you’re missing the whole point of David’s post: the fucked-up priorities of a mod who will ban you for “equality delusions” (LOL) but not for torture porn.
I’m bored, so I’mma hand you a shovel: what do you mean by “equality delusions”? Are you saying that some feminists are incorrect about what equality looks like, or that wanting equality is itself delusional?
That’s it, exactly, but for ages I read it as Violetcrantz, like Rosencrantz with a different flower. It’s not a very good nym.
It’s violent, I was misreading it as violet. I like my version better. 😀
Violentacrez = Violent Acres with a Z, yes. And I think his nym is supposed to represent some kind of gruesome amusement park, with John Wayne Gacy as emcee. Or something ooky like that.
Weird! I’d always read it with a Spanish flair, like ‘vee-yo-lenta-crez’. Never got violent acres out of it.
I don’t know…I don’t follow him. I just remember how Gawker exposed him awhile back as one of the all-time worst trolls, and how amused I was to find out just how well he fit that schlubby loser stereotype of a 101st Flying Monkey Keyboard Warrior™. He was the total sad sack with a mundane job. I almost felt sorry for him, until I remembered how many girls have killed themselves lately over stalkers and trolls.
Yeah, I read it as violet acrantz or violent acrantz – nothing that made any sense and certainly nothing about acres.
Gratuitous violets
Speaking of violets, does anyone here who reads Captain Awkward know what African Violet means as they use it?
Capt. Awkward has suggested that african violets would be perfect breakup gifts for friends you don’t want to be friends with any more.
Ouch, that’s a harsh gift. Mum had two African Violets in years past … they didn’t live long (and not ‘cos she’s incompetent with plants; she isn’t).
But they’re…that’s just weird.
Of course, I can kill ivy and grow an African violet cutting (pecunium, it’s looking adorable btw, got at least three pairs of little leaves and is starting to look like a proper plant)
* the one I thought might be growing is. You’re getting two African violets pecunium, unless you want me to keep the second one.
Killing ivy reminds me of the saying that if you can kill roses, you should give up gardening. 😉
I hope not. I haven’t killed a rose yet but I kill many things that are supposed to be indestructible. Spider plants, succulents, a morning glory, 2 manzanitas, and a coffeeberry that was planted in between two identical and completely healthy other coffeeberries.
My sister spent years trying to kill off the roses she had in her last house, with no success until she pretty well bulldozed ’em.
I’ve killed ivy. Oddly, though, the people I work with gave me a really lovely orchid when I got my masters, and I haven’t managed to kill that yet. It seems to thrive on my benign neglect. (That and the mantears I feed it every other week.)
Mantears are the best. Feed your orchids misandry to avoid misplantry!
RE gardening: I pretty much kill every single plant that I get my hands on, mainly because I didn’t water it (the last plants I killed I forgot to water for a few weeks). 🙁
I never bother about indoor plants. If I did, they’d die of neglect. But in any case, there’s nowhere to put them – flat surfaces are for books or DVDs to lie on, cats to sit on and (occasionally) humans to use.
Just a heads up that Manboobz saved your comment and is using it as proof that this subreddit won’t ban people who advocate for the torture and assault of women.
wtf – I guess it could be sarcasm but really does the fact that the jerk wasn’t banned mean that they do advocate torture and assault of women?
I think they do, but they just don’t want word to get out that they do.
They might mince words over whether they advocate it, but at the very least, they don’t object to the idea.
Phalaenopsis is my favorite orchid because it does indeed thrive on benign neglect. Also because it will bloom for months and months.
