A Voice for Men’s so-called “Honey Badgers” — its little super-team of female MRAs, led by blabby Canadian videoblogger Karen “GirlWritesWhat” Straughan — have a new theory about Anita Sarkeesian. And it’s a doozy.
Sarkeesian, you may recall, is a feminist cultural critic who’s faced pretty much nonstop harassment from misogynistic internet assholes since she launched a project to dissect sexist tropes in video games. AVFM has contributed, in its own special way, to this wave of harassment, with articles describing Sarkeesian as, among other things, a “moneygrubbing liar” and a “queen bee … girl interloper” in the world of video games; AVFM’s Dean Esmay also held her partially responsible, along with an assortment of other internet feminists, for the suicide of one Canadian Men’s Rights Activist.
The principals at AVFM have blamed her for — either inadvertently or deliberately — bringing this harassment on herself by going to 4chan and posting about her project. (As I noted in a previous post, there’s no actual evidence she ever did this.)
The Honey Badgers, for their part, are certain that getting harassed by 4chaners was part of her devious plan all along.
In a teaser for their internet “radio” show tonight, the “Honey Badger” known as TyphonBlue writes:
Like all professional damsels in distress, Anita Sarkeesian had to choose a good dragon. Just the right looming shadow to fall over her delicate and fragile sensibilities; just the right cackling stage-villain to inspire her cries of helpless horror.
She chose 4-chan. An internet forum known for it’s underbelly of foul-tempered and hair-triggered trolls.
Then, after accusing Sarkeesian of inviting countless rape and death threats upon herself (and only a portion of it from 4channers, I should add), the Badgers take their weird conspiracy theory one step further:
But we at Honey Badger Radio have noticed something… odd. The wave of so-called hate that Anita received from her carefully chosen dragon, wasn’t really all that bad.
Yeah. A year and a half (so far) of pretty much unending harassment and baseless criticism, complete with violent threats directed not only at her but at other women who have defended her — that’s nothing.
Compared to 4-chan’s usual scorched earth strategy–raizing [sic] everything to the ground and pissing on the ashes, Anita got a little singed, like she sat too close to a campfire.
So we have to ask… Did 4-chan white knight Anita? I mean, come on. Was that the best 4 chan could do?
Yes, that’s right. The Honey Badgers are accusing those who sent rape and death threats to Anita Sarkeesian … of “white knighting” her.
I can’t even.
Oh darn, I didn’t get to kick Scooby Dork around, esp. regarding that old “men are oppressed because SUICIDE” canard. Oh well, I’m sure my time will come…

Whoop! WHoop!here are still problems, but they certainly don’t lead to death in the first world that often (diseases, wars, childbirth).
OMG guys! people in other places have it worse, so we can’t complain.
Unless, of course, we are dudes complaining about how Anita Sarkeesian wants to ruin (I mean RUIN!) our games by pointing out how women are objectified.

And… (this is gonna rock yer world): There are women in the services. They get shot, and blown up, just like the men. The only thing that they don’t get to do is be in, “combat” jobs. Why? Not because they don’t want to, but because MEN (those asshats in Gov’t) won’t let them.

On the topic of nurse sharks, when I was in the Caribbean for study abroad I sent my parents and excited email the first day we went snorkeling, because we say a shark (and I spotted it). It was a 2 ft nurse shark.
Then I sent them an email detailing my attempts to avoid the horses between me and the saltwater shower.
They were like “Why were you scared of the horses and not the shark?”
“The horses were bigger than me, the shark was smaller. And also a nurse shark.”
I decided not to tell them about the ten-foot hammerhead until I got back home.
Oh sweet, one of the funny looking sharks.

Yes, this. If people are that lonely and desperate for contact they need help. Moaning about how they’re just drama llamas who are ‘lying’ and really don’t intend to kill themselves is beside the point. Wrong actually makes it sound like suicide is somehow a good thing and people who don’t do it are weak or some such bullshit. Weakness in either case isn’t the issue, desperation and loneliness are. If you can stop someone from feeling suicidal by showing that you care for them, why wouldn’t you? I mean, it really isn’t such a huge ask.
I didn’t get to see the “hammer” part of the hammerhead–I was wading, not snorkeling (which is scarier–I was much faster at snorkeling). We all thought it was probably a reef shark, except the other boat–that handed stopped to let all the people off it–chase the shark away from us, and got close enough to ID it.

pecunium – I can understand that. I think it’s because I’m used to having my sexual orientation be mostly unacknowledged, so I tend to notice this stuff more. Nowadays I just see a society where the assumption is that there are only two genders and one gender wants someone of the other gender.
I do agree on the gender essentialist stuff being a different can of fucked up though. The hetronormative part of the post is just an aside, inconsequential compared to the gender essentialism.
Well Anita hasn’t really been harassed in the first place, so what’s the problem? It was just some kids posting photoshopped pics of her and insulting her in the Youtube channel
This was only a big deal because certain media outlets think women are extra special victims and are worth special coverage
And it should also be noted that Anita’s videos and weirdly expensive Kickstarter project are really just exaggerations of alleged misogyny and probably don’t deserve the attention in the first place. It’s like the feminists who think Disney cartoons, video games etc are sexist because they feel offended
It’s a sad age we while in when a women speaks up about representation in media, she will be crucified by self entitled douchebags. I’m glad some people spoke up, like Movie Bob, Jim Sterling and a few others but I’d love to see someone with a lot of clout tear these reactionary gamers and there MRA masters down.
