I think we’re a bit overdue for another open thread for personal stuff. As per usual, no trolls, no flames, no being a butthead.

You know that friend of mine I’ve mentioned who I suspected was abusing his psychiatric medicine? This morning I had a talk with him about the various things that have been making him feel depressed and suicidal, and I think now I’ve gotten much closer to him. That’s what I’ve wanted to happen for a long time. I really hope I’m in a better position to help him out now. I’ve always seen him as depressed, but the things he told me are just horrific.
*sigh* I’m starting to get pretty discouraged in my housing search. I’m finding stuff for $500 a week, places that are inaccessible for my health appointments, or just plain shitholes.
I have a sinking feeling that the closet might be the best bang for my buck — the only other place I’ve seen that’s still open is a complete dive, mold in the bathroom, paint peeling, two slobby roommates. Hubby hated it, but I’m going crazy sleeping on a sofa and I’m so frustrated that I have money for rent AND STILL CAN’T LIVE IN A ROOM.
I’m just frustrated and discouraged and know that the longer it takes me to find a place, the crazier I’m going to get. Damn it.
LBT — try boarding houses? I know Pittsburgh has them for as low as $75 a week, but, uh…more than a few were concerned for my safety if I stayed there.
And it’s MA, you can’t get MyRide or something for doctor appt’s? *huffs at MA* I thought you had impressive healthcare! Bad MA!
Also, no contact hugs, and cute kitty sneezes (she’s been sneezy, it’s adorable)

I’m checking out a flophouse in Ohio. At this point, fuck it, I’m about ready to cave. The last boarding house I was in, one housemate threatened another with an axe and I ran into strangers in the dark TWICE. Still, I’ll give a look around. It’s not like I’m in a position to be picky.
Yeah, they’re pretty shitty, but with it hitting freezing at night, better than a bridge.
Yeah. The closet folks say I’m welcome to stay with them as long as they need, but…
Gah, I fucking HAVE money now, why am I still debating whether closet, flophouse, or rustymoldyfrat place is best? I thought once I had some money, I wouldn’t have to do this anymore…
Alas, money doesn’t quite solve everything. I’d offer you the place I’m currently spending an insomnic night packing up and preparing for the next renter, but to be honest, it’s nowhere near your location and like 1000 usd a month, so, probably not the kind of place you’d ever want to stay in, LBT. Plus, it’s old and windy and stuff.
Plus, neighbours kind of loud. Good luck with your shitty housing situation. I second ARgenti Aertheri’s recommendation, some place inside over the winter and then somewhere livable after.
Yeah, it sucks that you could afford a place, if only one existed.

On the plus side, I can totally rent an efficiency in Ohio for $350. Maybe I’ll just end up moving earlier than planned? Or something?
I think what’s really grinding is just NOT KNOWING. I have so many plans, but I can’t implement any of them until I get my housing situation settled. GRAH.
I hope the housing situation gets sorted soon, LBT. And Ally, I’m glad you were able to make that connection with your friend.
The cats are in a really bad position and I’m out of ideas. I’ve got two adolescents who hide from strangers, one adult who hates other cats and one adult who has event exhaustion and will attack people if I show her. If I bring them to events, they have no chance because either there’s no one there or it’s a big event and they have to compete against a bunch of cute kittens who show well. But if I don’t bring them to things, then of course they have no chance. It’s hopeless.
I don’t think I have any advice, katz. It sounds like maybe you want a different group of people than those who normally go to those events — like people who are specifically looking for an older/adult cat to rescue, rather than a kitten. Any of your fellow fosterers have any ideas? I wish I could adopt ALL THE KITTIES.
I got called to schedule a phone interview for the job I applied for. If I don’t blow it in that, the phone interview will be followed by a day-long in-person interview on location.
Oh, for the events… Have you tried Feliway to see if it has any effect on the cat who’s stressed out? And/or the timid ones?
Aw, I’m sorry, katz. That sucks. 🙁 I even WANT to adopt a quiet older cat at some point, so I know there’s a market out there! I don’t really know anything about cat adoption, so can’t really offer advice, but I hope things will be okay and your cats find good, appreciative homes.

Are you allowed to put them on like petfinder.com or such? I know I poked around there when I was in a position to maybe get a cat. There are definitely people like LBT and I who want an older cat that hopefully won’t tear the place up.
I’m using Feliway but it’s not working. They’re all on Petfinder but think how many cats are on there. I’ve only ever gotten responses online for my kittens.
Feliway didn’t work when my cats were fighting, but I thought it was worth a shot. (The thing that finally stopped them from fighting was catnip, oddly enough — I got them both stoned out of their minds on catnip, and they forgot they hated each other.)
What happens if you don’t find homes for them within a reasonable time period?
Katz — you don’t happen to be in/near South Carolina? Cuz I have a cousin there who seem to collect cats. Idk if her husband would allow for more, but I could ask.
Hugs if you want them, katz. That’s a really tough situation to be in.
Prolly shouldn’t adopt out to someone with a bunch of cats, especially since the one that needs to be placed the most doesn’t like other cats.
katz, you’re in LA, aren’t you? I can write to my LA gf and ask if anyone she knows is looking for a cat.
