Well, so far this is my favorite response to Jaclyn Friedman’s American Prospect piece on the Men’s Rightsers and that woman-hating problem of theirs. Because what better way to refute charges of misogyny than by declaring derisively that you “can usually spot whether or not a woman wrote a piece by the first few sentences?”
Let’s let rjworks13 explain just why Friedman lacks the intellectual heft to be taken seriously by serious men with credentials — sorry, CREDENTIALS — like him:
Oh boy.
I have to say that very favorite sentence of all in this wondrous bit of HeManWomanHatersplaining is this one, if it can even be called a sentence:
CREDENTIALS: I’m a long-time trained technical and creative writer from male-based military training and put to use over 20 years.
Oy. I can only assume from the evidence of this, er, sentence, that as a technical writer his job is to make sure that instruction manuals are as unreadable as possible. And that his “creative” writing most likely consists of many volumes of self-published Gorean porn.
If you want to compare Jaclyn Friedman’s CREDENTIALS with his, you can always go to her Wikipedia entry. I looked around a bit for rjworks13’s Wikipedia entry, but he doesn’t seem to have one.
rjworks13 was evidently so proud of this bit of writing of his that he deleted it. Luckily, I grabbed a screenshot beforehand. ABS: Always Be Screenshotting.
PS What’s “indifference propaganda?”
And dude presumes to critique other people’s writing!?
That’s when we laugh at them.
Here’s something I learned watching mindless television: Yiddish slang for penis is “schmuck” as in Dinner for Schmucks. Schwartz is Yiddish for black. (I checked an on-line Yiddish to English dictionary. My goodness, there are a lot of Yiddish words that have been adopted into colloquial north american English.)
I did the genderguesser thing. My extremely apologetic email to a co-worker (for grossly misunderstanding her) came out as weakly male. A page out of the romance novel I’m writing came out as weakly female. Not sure what to make of that, really.
To be fair that is a very creatively written sentence. It is completely unbound by conventional ideas about correct English grammar. Very avant-garde.

Thanks for the info. I wondered.
Lady Mondegreen – See “I is MANLY MAN” credentials above. *nod*
Oh noes, it’s Cock-Rub Warriors of Mars!
My brother swears that the subreddits for sharing cute animals pictures are only full of cute.
Got to love this. I just compared Louis’s writing (his latest channelled piece, that is) and mine.
Him: weak FEMALE, possibly European
Mine: MALE
Pffffffftlol
RE: Kittehserf
Oh, the Cockrub Warriors of Mars. YOU WILL BE FOREVER REMEMBERED.
@scary trees
Short Scary Stories is a subreddit I read often. The people are there to read and work on their writing skills, so there’s no bullshit. At least I have seen any.
PS if you send me something please send something that you haven’t published on a blog or anything, since I don’t want people to be able to Google it and find out who wrote it.
*haven’t* seen any.
@katz, can I ask real quick, this survey isn’t going to be for-profit or anything, is it? I’m happy to contribute but I only have limited rights on some of the samples I’d send you, and I want to be safe. 😉
katz, I doubt I can help with the survey; pretty well everything Louis or I write makes our genders aparrent to anyone except a machine. 😉
I should add, the samples I’d send haven’t been published online so you pretty much would have just have to have read an obscure trade journal or two to figure out who really wrote them, and it’s doubtful said journals would actually care if I republished an excerpt even on a for-profit site, but I like to be careful. But if you prefer previously unpublished work that’s cool too. 🙂
RE: MordsithJ
That reddit actually sounds kinda cool! (And very seasonally appropriate!)
Also, this is my last linkspam until it opens, I promise, but I am opening spookathon on October 30th! Give me prompts on the theme of ‘the spook,’ whether that means spiders or spies, sponsor other folks’ stories, and earn bonus illustrations and free words! If you want to give me a prompt early, like Argenti did in another thread, that’s totally fine too.
Isn’t against men’s rights pretty decent on reddit? I mean, granted, they exist solely because of the men’s rights movement and subreddit, but they’re still a good thing, as far as I remember.
What about Shit Reddit Says? Same thing applies.
@LBT
For the benefit of those of us who are still recent to the site and aren’t entirely familiar with everything everyone does [basically, I’m asking for me], what’s spookathon?
Just submitted some school essays on the gender guesser; like a lot of people I got “weak male” with a “European” suggestion, and I’m female. I am white so I guess the European thing isn’t totally weird.
What does “weak” refer to on that? Does it mean they’re not totally sure if you’re male, or that you’re not a very “manly” male?
katz – Second sample I sent you is from a private journal, has never been published (to my knowledge). Knock yourself out.
I think it’s just about the percentages the thing comes up with on word usage and so on. The makers themselves say it’s at best 60-70% accurate, so “better than a random guess” is about all they’re claiming for it.
Does this even make sense? Because I had to read it about three times to kind of get it… actually, I find the whole text quite confusing.
And “schvantz” is the word LBT was looking for.
Athywren — LBT, among other things, writes. He’s been doing sorta fundraiser type things with a theme and -athon tacked on the end, cuz they are write-a-thons. So spookathon is one with the theme of “the spook”.
