I’ve learned a lot about myself in the process of writing this blog. For example, this week, I learned that I’m a “vile, subhuman thing” who “like licking sh*t of feminist’s shoes” and “just wants every man cuckolded.” Also, I have some interesting and specific tastes in porn that even I was unaware of.
I learned all of these things from the always reliable purveyors of accurate and unbiased information in the Men’s Rights subreddit, in a thread ostensibly devoted to my coverage of the recent events in Toronto, but which ended up being more devoted to my various alleged failings and my alleged preferences in the porn realm.
Let’s take a look!
Here’s a man who is evidently also a pig suggesting that I am a man who is also a slug:
But ThePigmanAgain was too late! For I was able to steal EIGHTEEN WHOLE TRAFFICS from the Men’s Rights subreddit that day before the moderators removed this thread from the subreddit, lest any more unwary Men’s Rightsers wander into my evil internet lair where they might find writing critical of the men’s rights movement and its farcical attempts at activism.
Evidently Alisdair isn’t one of those who actually clicked on the link to my post in the thread, because he apparently believes that my post was a do-it-yourself guide to cuckolding other men, or perhaps a guide to getting cuckolded. I’m not sure..
And then there’s JayBopara, a MHRA warrior who seems a bit obsessed with what he for some reason believes are my preferences, porn-wise:
These comments of his raise a few questions for me.
1) Where exactly is he allegedly reading about my alleged preferences in porn? The MakeStuffUpAboutDavidFutrelleWiki?
2) What on earth is “mangina porn,” anyway?
Asked this very question in the thread itself, Jay has this answer:
Ah.
Dude, hate to break it to you, but I’m pretty sure that you’re the only person in the universe who calls that “mangina porn.”
Also, despite the similarities in the first three letters of the words, and the involvement of women in each, there is no real connection between “feminism” and “femdom.” One is a social and political movement; the other is a kink.
Anyway, this is how the HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENT FOR MEN AND BOYS OF THE 21ST CENTURY deals with its critics.
Well, its male critics anyway. It treats its female critics much, much worse.
Ugh, ugh, ugh. Really makes you wonder how much internalised misogyny the women writing this have, or how whether they’re writing this shit to play by the boys’/publishers’ rules, or what.
How is one supposed to “realise he loves you” when he treats you like shit? WTF does he do to people he doesn’t love or even like? These heroes (pfft) sound like they’re massively immature at best and abusers at worst.
God, it’s nice to be old enough, or secure enough, to say that’s a “fuck off forever” situation.
Ranma 1/2 got tired quickly. It was just so repetitive and never grew…
He treats them like real people because why would he treat them “special” because he’s not into them. Clearly, he only treats them like that if he likes them!
The male lead in Boys Over Flowers is quite literally the head of a group of school bullies (but they’re all really rich and good looking, so apparently that’s OK). The heroine meets him after she saves the life of a boy who he and his buddies have driven to attempt suicide. Dude makes Edward Cullen look like a reasonable person.
Thing is, I really don’t think these relationship dynamics are the result of pressure from dudely producers/publishers, because there’s a huge female audience that eats this shit up with a spoon. Why that’s the case is the real question.
Holy fuck, seriously? That sounds even worse than a lot of the anime I’ve watched and/or heard of.
Also! There was this one drama, can’t remember the name, where the male lead was such a jerk that the heroine literally entered his number into her phone with “The Asshole” as the name it was saved under. And then he forced her to become his “slave” and clean his house for him for months, complete with a “slave contract”, and she fell in love with him too, because…well, that part is unclear. Apparently if you smush a man and a woman (actually, high school girl) together for long enough they will automatically fall in love.
Fuck, that’s all too vile for words. MRA shit with better pictures.
I have got to start using “Sacred serpents!” as a swear. Hail our reptilian feminist deities!
What really annoys me is that they almost always have the female lead start out quite feisty and not willing to put up with any shit, but then as soon as she starts to like the guy she suffers some sort of personality removal surgery incident and turns into a complete doormat. And nobody seems to realize that this is an illustration of how abusive relationships work, instead people think it’s “romantic”.
That is … depressing.
Anyone have any kitten videos?
To be fair, I think part of the appeal of that dynamic to the women who like it is the idea that they can change this selfish, arrogant jerk into a decent person just by the power of their innate awesomeness. Problem is, to my eye, the guys usually aren’t all that much nicer afterwards – nicer than they were in the beginning, sure, but they’re still jerks. The only exception I can think of offhand was Fondant Garden, where the dude actually was much nicer post falling in love with the girl (but we had to sit through a subplot where he gets very specific amnesia and forgets only the stuff to do with her, just to make sure that everyone understands that it was her who turned him into a functional adult). That one is from Taiwan, though, and the innocent-and-genuine-girl-tames-abusive-jerk-but-really-he’s-still-kind-of-an-asshole trope seems to be far less common there.
Spoiler:
Not porn but anyone else love “Cotillion” by Georgette Heyer? The heroine starts the book in love with the handsome asshole, persuades other decent man to pretend to be engaged to her to make handsome asshole jealous, you spend the whole book thinking she’s going to end up with handsome asshole & at the end, she has realised that handsome asshole is an asshole & that she loves the decent man. Totally subverts the usual plot of the genre. Hooray!
And slugs can be pretty impressive, you know. I give you the leopard slug:

Erica Moen (who is an awesome web cartoonist) recommends Crash Pad in her comic Oh Joy Sex Toy (http://www.ohjoysextoy.com/crashpad/ possibly not safe for work)
Cassandra, isn’t Boys Over Flowers the one where at the beginning the lead guy has his goons attack her with a knife? He meant only to hurt her but the slightly nicer guy saves her from being killed or severely injured because the noise was disturbing his rest.
To apologize, the evil male lead has her chloroformed and gets his straight female staff to give her spa trearments while she is unconscious. She wakes up in his dead sister’s or maybe it was his dead mother’s clothes sitting in his room. She is fairly angry but somehow they work it out.
The idea of calling the police is never mentioned. This is despite the fact you have high school bullies so powerful even the teachers do everything they say.
Close, but even worse! In the Korean version it’s quite clear that the goons are about to rape her, which apparently asshole-in-chief didn’t tell them to do, he just told them to scare her and they figured a bit of rape would really get them into his good books.
Also, the initially slightly nicer guy turns out to be really nice later, and we end up being supposed to like all of the main four because they had difficult childhoods (really traumatic stuff like your rich parents not being around for Christmas) so it’s not their fault that they’re horrible people. And the huge gaping plot hole of, if guy#2 is so nice why was he not objecting to the bullying until the target was a girl who he wanted to date? And if he wasn’t nice in the beginning, what happened to make him so nice later? Never explained, the audience is just supposed to go with it.
And then there’s the part where he announced to the whole school that she’s his girlfriend, without actually asking her out and getting any sort of confirmation that she agrees, and proceeds from there on the assumption that she is in fact now his girlfriend and if she interacts with other men she’s cheating on him. Which, again, everyone goes along with, because did I mention that he’s rich and good looking?
That thing was a clusterfuck of horrible ideas about relationships, and I’m side-eyeing the woman who wrote the original manga so hard.
*lol* I’m laughing so hard at the “bud David likes femdom porn”,”that’s an ad hominem”, “no it isn’t, because David admits to liking femdom porn somewhere on the internet” exchange.
Okay, THIS is what “ad hominem” MEANS: you make a reply which is about the person making a claim rather than the claim itself. There’s an acceptable kind where you point out that the person is being inconsistent (so you claim that P? But you earlier argued for Q, and Q implies not-P!), and an unacceptable kind where you just insult the person (so you claim that P? BUT YOU LIKE FEMDOM PORN AND THAT’S WEIRD!). But it doesn’t suddenly cease to be an ad hominem just because what you say about the person is TRUE.
So much logic fail.
Here’s a theory: Girls are always taught that success for a girl means men want her and chase after her. Like, fairy-tale princesses are mainly distinguished by being beautiful, and as a result, men want them and chase after them. Now, if a man keeps wanting and chasing a girl even after she’s told him over and over again to fuck off, that means he REALLY really wants her.
So, sometimes I think the guy is an asshole to show that the girl can change him with the power of luuuurve, and we’re supposed to want to be that girl, because we’re supposed to want to be awesome enough to have that power. But sometimes I think the assholishness is more there to explain why the girl keeps telling him to fuck off and leave her alone, and the point of the whole thing is rather that he keeps chasing after her still because he WANTS her THAT MUCH.
And sometimes it’s a combination of the two.
Yeah, it’s super disturbing.
Ummm… I read the Hana Yori Dango (Boys over Flowers) manga (its a 36 volumes long doorstopper if I remember correctly)
And as I recall in the manga, yes, the guy is the head school bully and bullies the heroine, who fights back and the whole ends with her kicking him in the head. (This is the point where he goes “I like this girl!”)
The other thing you must know about the this version of the guy, yes, he is “handsome”, rich, educated, aggressive…. but also kind of a moron missing all common sense and has the habit of mixing up common words (and Hilarity Ensues). Even his friends call him an idiot. And the girl is not a helpless little flower, her catchphrase is “I’m a weed I survive!” and she is not one bit less violent (or headstrong) than the guy. (I liked her… I read the comic for her, the boys were kind of meh.)
I actually felt the portrayal of the heroine’s parents more problematic… they are gold diggers and their whole purpose in life is to make their daughter marry a rich guy, and to serve as poor people are funny type of comic relief. YUCK!
Like everyone here, I cannot stand the boy-is-an-arsehole-to-girl-to-show-he-likes-her nonsense. Its considered so ‘cute’ though, it feels like it will never go away.
Also, slugs are awesome. Many are actually voracious predators. http://www.nudipixel.com is where I go for brain bleach when I’m not really in a vertebrate mood.

*back to bed now I think.*
Yeah it is Hana Yori Dango. I think I might have been too young to get the rape reference. I do remember the female character being good but the two main men weren’t great. The first was horrid and the second was friends with horrid people. I know they improve and you learn their troubles but they start so horrible it can’t be overcome. In fact the fact you begin to route for them is the problem.
I thought that whIle being parodies and stereotypes the male characters in Oran School Hostclub were far more likeable.
