Welcome to the Manchine

Today, let’s pay a little visit to the Men’s Rights subreddit, where a FeMRA calling herself Super_Delicious is expressing her gratitude for the warm welcome she has received from the Men’s Rights movement. And then along comes a dude called Eryemil, who’s evidently not pleased with Super_Delicious’ not-fanatical-enough stance on circumcision.

Super_delicious 12 points 22 hours ago (25|13) As a woman I'm glad I'm welcomed into a movement that helps the men I love. It's rather spectacular. :) permalink source parent save give gold hide child comments [–]Eryemil [-1] -8 points 22 hours ago (22|30) You have a very interesting definition of welcomed. Because here I thought most MRAs that actually know who you are (and I'm not sure many would) hate your guts or shun you. Go post in AVFM where the community is more personal and activism driven and see how welcome you feel. permalink source save parent give gold [–]Super_delicious -11 points 22 hours ago (16|27) No you're just a fucking cunt. No one here has to agree with every part of the men's rights movement to still support most of it. You're delusional if you think every person here agrees with every aspect of the men's rights movement. I bet he only reason you target me is because I'm the only one you haven't managed to best in a debate. permalink source save parent give gold [–]Eryemil [-1] 10 points 21 hours ago (13|3) Are you serious? Need I link you to our last exchange. There hasn't been single time when you haven't left the conversation and refused to address my arguments. Tell me, what's more likely; that you are more intelligent that evey single person I debate who haven't managed or that you are being intellectually dishonest? And for the record, I don't dislike you because you happen to disagree with the one subset of MR activism I am most passionate about. I dislike you because you are a hypocritical princess with a bloated sense of self-importance. permalink source save parent give gold [–]Super_delicious -3 points 18 hours ago (5|8) You mean the last exchange were I wouldn't debate your same tired arguments. And I also didn't want you to link me another picture of a dog dick. permalink source save parent give gold

Argumentum ad Dog Dickum. That’s a new one.

The debate continues on like this for some time, if you can’t get enough of this brilliant intellectual interchange.

I found this exchange through a post on the AgainstMensRights subreddit, a much more welcoming place, provided you’re not a Men’s Rights asshole.

I don’t get what the appeal is. Not going to infantilise everyone who digs it though.

Don’t bet on it. Right now on Feministe there’s a thread about how “intactivists” (yeah, stupid name) take over every damn conversation about FGM. Thread’s full of douchebags screaming that most FGM isn’t infibulation (so, presumably, is no worse generally than circumcision) and that circumcision is the worst thing ever. One idiot even said he’d rather lose a leg than be circumcised, and then went on to compare it with rape, then said he’s a rape survivor. A very WTF thread altogether.

Oh god, that fucking thread. V_V

There was an article on Slate the other day about “intactivists”. Their tactics remind me a lot of mra’s (I realize there’s obviously an overlap between the 2 groups):

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/medical_examiner/2013/09/intactivists_online_a_fringe_group_turned_the_internet_against_circumcision.html

I don’t agree with any medical procedure being performed on a person who couldn’t consent to it (unless the person’s health were at risk), which would cover circumcision performed on children. If an adult male wants to get circumcised, that’s his choice.

Circumcision – Obviously against FGM, FGM is terrible and it was (and is) meant to deny women choices and to inhibit her ability to have sex successfully. If there was a science-based reason for FGM, I don’t know of it.

MGM, well, it’s not as bad as FGM. However, I don’t think we should routinely circumcise boys unless there’s a medical reason (or if Jews wanted to do it to conform to their religious practices I guess, because although I’m not in favor of that, most men are still able to use their penises after circumcision, so it’s not so bad). I want them to be able to choose to be circumcised or not, when they’re older and can make the choice.

I don’t think religious tolerance should take precedence over an individual human choosing what to do with their body. Far be it from me to tell people what they can or can’t believe but doesn’t my right to swing my fist end when it meets another’s nose? I don’t see why religion should be exempt from that.

My mom didn’t even have my ears pierced when I was little. That was my choice when I was a big girl who understood what it was and wanted to do it for herself. I’m really grateful for that.

Yeah, I’m not really inclined to give religious exemptions either. I support vaccinating everyone unless they have allergies or are immunosupressed, so I should support not circumcising anyone unless there’s a medical reason.

Marie,
Not condescending at all! Thanks for the thoughts. A mother’s guilt knows no bounds!

Balleyrenee,

(TW male circumcision)

I’m not sure if what we did was cosmetic, cultural, or for health reasons. Being a woman (with female genitalia), I leaned on evidence, other men’s (with male genitalia) opinions, and the father of my son to make my decision. I am positive what I decided was not ignorant. I pray it wasn’t cruel.

But that is not what “female circumcision” refers to.

Removal of the clitoral hood is classified under type 4 female circumcision/FGM. It is condemned by the WHO just as the more severe forms of FGM while its male counterpart is widely condoned.

@Nitram

I didn’t mean to offend you, you seemed to put a lot of thought into it and everything. I think I’m a little biased because of a particular friend of mine got her baby circumcised because it “looked gross” otherwise. Sorry if my comment bothered you! You do not sound ignorant or cruel at all.

Okay, today I learned what a prince albert is, and why it’s called that.

I will go to bed as soon as my legs unclench. I’m not remotely sleepy, but it’s gonna be a long night.

Obviously against FGM, FGM is terrible and it was (and is) meant to deny women choices and to inhibit her ability to have sex successfully.

Widespread MGM was started by the psychiatric field in the 1800s to stop boys from masturbating (which didn’t work) since it was believed at the time that masturbation caused insanity.

Yes, and we should work to change societal views on the matter and make it that circumcision only happens when it’s medically necessary, or if an informed adult chooses it later in life. There’s no need to demonise women while doing this.

Although that’s appalling, it’s still not the same as the reasons FGM is done, sorry. You’re comparing apples and oranges here.

I can’t even wrap my mind around guys who try to minimize FGM by comparing it to circumcision. It’s like if I walked up to a person who’d had acid thrown in her face, pointed to the chicken-pox scar on my chin, and told her she didn’t know what real suffering was like.

Which doesn’t mean I’m in favor of chicken pox, but yeesh.

http://www.circlist.com/surveys/williamson-01.html

“Regardless of pediatricians’ attempts to negate routine newborn circumcision, U.S. circumcision rates remain constant. This study hypothesized that, because circumcision is usually a maternal choice and the circumcised penises are perceived by young women as more attractive, most women prefer circumcision for sexual reasons. Of 145 new mothers of sons responding to this survey, 71 to 83% preferred circumcised penises for each sexual activity listed. Visual appeal and sexual hygiene were predominate reasons for favoring circumcised sexual partners. Even among women having sexual experience only with uncircumcised partners, only half preferred uncircumcised penises for sexual partners. 89% of the sample had had their sons circumcised.”
