So for some reason the fellas on the Men’s Rights subreddit are discussing an article by Australian newspaper columnist Clementine Ford in which she expresses her desire to see more dongs on television.
As she notes, there are plenty of boobs on display on HBO shows like Game of Thrones, yet “rarely are we treated to the visual smorgasbord of a well stocked meat platter. ” Ford is sick of it. “So bring on the parade of wangs, willies and woodies!” she demands. “I’m fond of a wand and I’m not ashamed to say it.”
I’m not terribly familiar with the writings of Clementine Ford, but evidently she’s not big on subtlety.
Anyway, the fellas in the Men’s Rights subreddit aren’t having any of it. Nuh uh. They ain’t buying it, ladies! You may write columns about how you want more wang on TV. You may talk about it with your friends. You may have gigantic collections of peen pics hidden away on your hard drive.
But the MRAs of Reddit know better. It’s all some devious feminist ploy, as Steampunk_Moustache helpfully explains.
Huh. That took an odd twist at the end there.
But it’s our old friend Giegerwasright who provides the real answer, in the form of a wall-o-mansplainin’ so giant that I had to shrink the text to even screencap it.
Huh.
So why exactly are women pretending to be interested in seeing more penises on television? So they can point at them and laugh?
Women are such an enigma, especially if you just assume that nothing they ever say is true and that it’s all part of some weird plot to screw with men’s heads.
(H/t to r/againstmensrights for pointing me to geigerwasright’s lovely comment.)
“Me not able to read and understand patriarchy’s definition on 101 feminism blogs because me have the staff of patriarchy between my legs which prevent me to challenge meuh privilege so I need some post-teenager daddy’s girl liberal student to enlighten me and teach me how to not rape women, how the earth revolves around the sun and stuff.”
Please be coherent, interesting and original. If you can’t understand basic mainstream feminist ideas, I think that’s the least you can do. I’m not asking for much!
Brz, we’re full up on bullshit today, try again on the 5th of Nevuary, thanks.
Take your faux French with you.
soccer blue!
Moon dew!
I’m impressed that we’ve gotten to over 200 comments without this degenerating into lots and lots of pictures of attractive naked men. Wait, was that impressed or depressed?
Well, I AM at work. 😀
Anne Rice is a specific name that springs to mind. You may have heard of her.
Female writers of erotica in general. Try browsing the internet. It is not at all hard to find.
Saying “all joking aside” and then phrasing your “real” question in a purposefully jokey and condescending manner doesn’t actually help us take you seriously.
But I’ll do it anyway, because I’m stupid.
There is a difference between ladies sitting down to watch a sexy TV show where there’s some penis, and a random dude sending her a picture of his penis.
The difference is context, and consent.
I watch HBO. I see a lot of naked ass on that channel, and hear a lot of “fuck”s. But at this moment, I am sitting in an office. I would not particularly enjoy someone walking by flaunting hir assets as yelling swear words.
This isn’t hypocrisy.
This applies to your question in the following way: unsolicited and random penises are gross, inappropriate, and at times, harassing. This is because they are unsolicited and/or incongruous. Penises in a show where everyone expects graphic nudity are fine, and considered explicitly sexy by some. The fact that some men believe women are lying when they say this is sexist.
Make sense?
It’s not for lack of trying on my part.
@katz: Or for more fun, have them read Teahouse: http://teahousecomic.com/comic/?id=150
BTW, I enjoy Artifice and Y-Gallery as well.
Oh yeah, Teahouse is great! But you have to actually keep track of who people are. Artifice is much simpler that way.
@Brz: Nothing says “I don’t understand patriarchy” quite like taking every strawman of the concept and putting them in one disheveled run-on sentence.
Okay, wait, can we back up to the OP for a minute?
Why ARE straight men the ones most turned on by seeing penises?
Anybody?
@ Howard Bannister (above)
I think we’re often turned on by things that also give us a lot of anxiety.
I can’t help with the full-frontal (you would not believe how difficult it is to find full-frontal male pics that aren’t porn, or body-builder types, or just do. not. want. gross) but here’s someone who fits the bill (well, for me).
🙂
@Howard:
I explored the thread a little. Apparently the dude’s basing it off of this salon article about a book, which states that both gay and straight men search for penises when looking for porn (and implies large penises are more attractive to both). I… don’t really know what to make of it.
It also states pretty explicitely that men search for porn, while women prefer erotic fan fiction.
There’s such a wealth of oddity behind such a bold statement.
“Oddity” is an understatement.
I think this just goes to show that feminists are finally doing something for men. Men could never get something on TV that catered to their own tastes. We are using the feminine imperative to demand something we don’t really want, and they do. You’re welcome, men.
@YoullNeverGuess:
You should bring this up next time you get into a debate with an MRA.
“If feminism is for equality, then what are they doing to help the problems men face?”
“Don’t worry, feminists are actively lobbying for their to be more nude dicks in media.”
“I… wait, what?”
“You’re welcome. :)”
Brz seems very, very familiar. Wonder if they found their way here from a certain university-based facebook group.
Also, ever thought that women sexualizing men’s bodies in art is a thing that isn’t as widely publicized as men sexualizing women’s bodies? I recall a great forum post I found somewhere where a series of pictures that were made with the intention of sexualizing men’s bodies for the heterosexual female (using popular comic and video game characters) were posted without context, and the reactions to them. I’d go so far as to say it is taboo in many places. It may not be as easy to get the publicity and funding for art series glorifying penises, and I get the feeling that has little to do with “teh evil feminists oppressing mai peen”. I paint nudes, but not necessarily in erotic contexts. I’ve painted a lot of penises. I find them beautiful in their own way, since each is different, like with vulvas. And they are certainly sexy in the right context. But the fact that I like them doesn’t mean I want to see them all the time and certainly doesn’t mean I want to see yours. If I want to see your penis, trust me, I’ll let you know.
Game of Thrones could use more sexy full frontal male nudity, imho. Sexy being the key word (certain unsexy and terrifying scenarios from season three come to mind – I wouldn’t want to see that happen to anyone).
Anyway, you don’t have to try hard to find women sexualizing men and describing penises in detail in erotica on the internet. Try typing in various male characters from literature and television into deviantart or fanfiction.net. They aren’t something I’d call “high art”, but these things aren’t created by women with the intention of making penises seem ugly.
I watched the first season of GoT and did not like it enough to continue, largely because of the “you know what this needs? MOAR RAPE!” attitude of the producers, and the constant invasion of naked female bodies in any scene they could possibly be put regardless of necessity.
And somewhere around episode 4 or 5, I remember there was suddenly one brief shot of a male full frontal naked. I burst out laughing not at the guy’s penis but because it seemed rather obvious that someone at HBO watched the first couple of episodes and went “Uh-oh. We’ve got a lot of naked chicks and no naked dudes, it’s gonna look lopsided. Quick, get one of the guys naked! But not one of the ones we recognize or who is a major figure in the story, because that’s just gross.”
These guys really hate themselves. They hate themselves so much that when a woman heartily assures them that YES WE WOULD LIKE TO ADMIRE ALL THE MANY VARIETIES OF PEEN OUT THERE, they just can’t wrap their tiny minds around the concept, and that is so friggin sad.
Also, if I had a nickle for every time a female writer, which is a kind of artist, has lovingly described in great detail various and sundry penii, christ, I’d have a crap ton of nickles. If I had a nickle for every time I’VE done it, I could consider myself a paid writer. So…
Yeah. So sad.
Lili Fugit (cool nym!) – me too. Gods, the screeds of gay lovemaking scenes with peens I’ve written …
I’m guessing that straight men are only around by erect penises, and that it’s pretty much straight-up classical conditioning. Seeing erections makes you think about erections, thinking about erections gives rise to erections, and away you go. Certainly “big dick” porn is a recognized category, and it’s not made for a female audience.
Or think of it like action movies. There’s the vicarious thrill of participating in a fictional character’s surpassing manliness.
@howard bannister
Okay, little disclaimer here because I am 100% talking out my ass here since I don’t really know anything about this and am also not a straight man, but my guess would be socialization? Or if seeing penis is like a signal that sexytimes will commence? Idk but like I said I’m talking out my ass.
@kirbywarp
Oh shit I”m so glad I wasn’t drinking anything XD
