Some commenters here have started discussing the Ariel Castro sentencing — and the remarkable, delusional, self-pitying, victim-blaming statement he made before being sentenced — in the Minter Meltdown thread. Because so much of what he said — and so many of the issues raised — are potentially triggering, I thought it would be good to open up a separate thread for this.
Here’s a piece at the Daily Beast with some of the most astounding quotes from Castro’s statement today.
Consider this whole thread to have a TRIGGER WARNING on it for discussions of Castro’s rape apologias and victim blaming.
@Karalora:
“First of all, “bad neighborhood” always implies “ghetto,” so right off the bat you’ve got racism and classism on top of the sexism.”
If you’re talking about the US. That line gets used in lots of places with very different social histories, where race doesn’t enter the matter, though the classism sure does. US =/= the world.
@cloudiah
This is possible one of my favorite “come for the mockery stay for the ___”s ever XD.
Sourdough pancakes are awesome! So,seconding this recommendation 😀
Sourdough everything is awesome! My next project is to learn how to make bagels!
I really hope they don’t actually count fruit, ’cause like one banana is about 1/3 – 1/2 the sugar you can have in a day. Wuuut.
Sourdough buns make for amazing sandwiches
Someone was asking how many more prisoners there might be out there. Here’s another one now: http://news.yahoo.com/california-men-accused-running-pot-farm-keeping-girl-213745609.html
auggziliary, I don’t think so. I know that you can use wheat, white and rye flour, and I’ve read that you can try rice flour, but you run the risk of having the colonies collapse on you if they aren’t fed often enough.
Shadow, you should try my sourdough english muffins. 😉
I came to a similar conclusion myself recently, although what tipped me off was the absurd amount of bile directed at “pretty boy” teen idols like Justin Bieber. I realized that it’s not that these guys are pretty boys that draws the ire – it’s that they are pretty boys and girls like them that way. There are two basic rules to the Man Game: 1) You must be a Macho Man (TM). 2) You must get lots of women. But if women don’t like Macho Men (TM) – if they like pretty boys instead – then you can’t follow both rules at once and therefore can’t win the Man Game.
A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?
Yeah, thankfully, that conversation is now over. Just jeez, WTF. I even STARTED the damn talk by mentioning that if you insist that the vessel is me, then I AM a man who looks like a woman. I admit to feeling no sense of connection to yaoi, and some of the fanbrats can really skeeve me out (some teenage girl telling me she’d bang me on the Internet? WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS YOUNG LADY) but many people, many colors.
Age aside, “bang me on the Internet” sounds painful.
HARD INTERNETS ARE MISANDRY
Let me guess, this Castro monster is going to be the new MRA hero because they think he was wrongfully accused. He suffered from a feminist society that drove him to do what he did. Right?
I see it now, it’s probably all over the reddits.
@kaitlyn
Rehabilitation is a myth? So what do you suggest we do? Give up on everyone? If you commit one crime you’re screwed for life?
Does the American prison system really need more people in it?
I mean, I believe SOME people probably can’t rehabilitate or w/e, but I bet SOME people can…
@moldybrehd
Okay, that made me crack up.
Also hi future people I read threads really belatedly :XD:
@LBT
There are not enough facepalms in the world…
That 25 g of sugar is added sugar. The sugar in apples and bananas isn’t part of the “added sugar” count, if you’re tracking that stuff. (I couldn’t find the “25 grams” bit on their website right away, but I found them saying 6 teaspoons for women, and based on a quick internet search 6 teaspoons is about 25 grams.)
It’s still not a lot. I had some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the freezer and checked-1/4 of the pint has 23 grams of sugar. Some of that is lactose, but the majority is added sugars. Or according to the AHA’s website, 12 oz of soda (the size of a typical can IIRC) is more than a woman should have in a day.
I think other places I’ve seen a recommendation of <50 grams of added sugar and no distinction between men and women.
