Apparently, to a lot of the regulars in the Men’s Rights subreddit — like the hundreds who upvoted a post of this picture — the notion that men should raise their sons to respect women as equals is nothing more than foul propaganda and MISANDRY of the highest order.
And seriously, those guys in the poster look like total White Knight Beta Manginas.
Some of the Men’s Rightsers were especially offended by the white ribbon at the bottom of the poster, which they saw as a vaguely sinister reminder of a World War I campaign to shame British men into enlisting in the army. Because suggesting to your sons that boys and girls should be treated equally is the same as being guilt-tripped into becoming cannon fodder:
Others used the poster as an opportunity to rail against … marriage. The top comment in the thread, as I write this post, is this one.
Elezeid expanded on this theme:
Caspian_Drifter responded to the eeeevil poster with a rhetorical question that unintentionally helped to underscore the whole point of the campaign in the first place:
Seriously, ladies, why do gals like to go on and on about “equality” so much when your ladybrains weren’t even smart enough to come up with the idea in the first place? I mean, really, you ungrateful gals, you have a man/men to thank for that.
If I remember correctly, it was T. Reginald Equality who came up with the idea, with some help from his brother Ned (who suggested that he name it after himself).
I always use pencils. I guess I haven’t been misandry-ing enough :’( Hopefully the hivemind will forgive me.
From what I’ve read that may be a problem: http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mas2/V74-gender-symmetry-with-gramham-Kevan-Method%208-.pdf
Hey Michael, there are a few of us a good bit older’n you, don’t despair! I’m fifty, for starters. I shouldn’t even mention how old Mr K is. 😉
Charge the nostalgia cannon!
If it makes you feel better, I’m 34 and I know Zork mostly by reputation. I played it for a few minutes once.
Also? Spacewar! is from 1962. Also Pong. Zork’s text-based because it’s got way more interactivity than those games do.
Also Pong predates Zork. Pong is not from 1962.
I’ve never played a MUD, and barely played an MMO (I tried Dungeons & Dragons Online a couple times). I like the spontaneity (and hilarity) of the tabletop.
Just yesterday in my sci fi game, the crew fought and defeated several ships they hadn’t encountered before. The last one was disabled, with a big hole punched through it by a rail cannon.
So one of the crew suits up and goes across to investigate, and of course gets jumped by the pilot.
After exchanging a few blows that came to naught, my player maneuvered the pilot into position where he could use his rockets to bull rush the enemy out into space. Then he declared he wanted to slap a grenade to the enemy’s chest and rocket away from him.
I decided what he needed to do to accomplish that, and he managed it, so I gave it to him.
It was loads of fun.
Michael, you’re far from an ancient relic. If that’s the case, I shouldn’t be typing this, I’m so old and dusty.
OMG! You guys made me think back to my childhood (30 years old) computer games so I googled “Midnight Rescue” and I found a site where I could download it for free! Squeeee!
Okay, I seem to be surrounded by other oldtimers. This is weird. Anyone got any suggestions for games with good storylines?
I’m so old I’ve never heard of any of these games …
Falconer, stop trying to invoke my inner nerd. I think he’s sufficiently awake.
Lets see I remember Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?,
Oregon trail? I really am younger than I feel. But instead of making this my weird nostalgia tour, how about we name good games with actual good female characters or even protagonists? I’ll start with The Longest Journey’s April Ryan
I suspect it’s this more than anything. It’s somebody speaking about men’s issues in a way that doesn’t fit into mra ideology, so they don’t like it.
@Michael Sondberg Olsen
I knew that part, I just didn’t know which game 😉 And 30 is not old!
Idk if it’s your ‘genre’ but I liked kotor and kotorii. (knights of the old republic one and two). They were star wars rpgs that were pretty fun imo, though the second one wasn’t as…finished? I think they rushed it.
I’m now playing Zork and it’s all your fault, people of manboobz.
We can literally never use white for anything ever again since the white feather campaign. I can’t even wear a white shirt or misandry.
LOL “All the responsibilities and none of the rights.” Like the right to clean up shitty diapers and wake up with a crying baby three times in a night vs the responsibility of being able to come and go as you please once your 8 hour shift at work is done.
Critical Dragon’s comments always make me laugh.
The most misandristical thing in the world is laundry detergent!
Funny, I thought the MRAs would be more intimate with the white hoods and robes worn by some of the members, rather than a century-old military campaign.
I never really got into the Infocom games… had “Adventure” on the VIC-20, and kept getting killed by chiggers in the swamp. I much preferred the later LucasArts style adventure games where you can’t actually die or trap yourself in a dead-end.
I was big into MU*s, but more the social MUCKs than the actual games; the text-based precursors to Second Life.
Again, I kind of love it when they let the mask slip and just admit they hate women, not just feminists. Yup, we knew it dudes, but thanks for making it explicit!
This was a hard day, and I wanted to bat some trolls around. Where are they?
OMG, there’s a guy in the comments equating the scene in Trainspotting where Renton dives into the toilet to “enter[ing] the porcelain vagina to find his shit.” I fucking needed a laugh.
People, people, people, PEOPLE: I’d like to bring it to your attention that most female penguins are nearly 50% covered in white feathers. Muahahaha.
I saw that too, Cloudiah. Because every man automatically thinks of a vagina when he sees a shit filled toilet. LOL
How on earth do you get from a comment about pencils to the thing you linked? Blurting out non-sequiturs isn’t how you get people to take you seriously.
Oh he’s way past any chance of anyone taking him seriously.
Know what I think when I see a shit filled toilet? “Who didn’t flush” and “why did my brother not fix the damned toilet yet” (he’s a plumber, ergo it’s his problem)
Vaginas do not enter into the thought process in the slightest.
From the Murray Strauss article:
Ah, yes, ignore the lifetime figures and just assert that the annual figure is more accurate. For no reason whatsoever. And to think that MRAs call Strauss a good scientist.
