Apparently, to a lot of the regulars in the Men’s Rights subreddit — like the hundreds who upvoted a post of this picture — the notion that men should raise their sons to respect women as equals is nothing more than foul propaganda and MISANDRY of the highest order.
And seriously, those guys in the poster look like total White Knight Beta Manginas.
Some of the Men’s Rightsers were especially offended by the white ribbon at the bottom of the poster, which they saw as a vaguely sinister reminder of a World War I campaign to shame British men into enlisting in the army. Because suggesting to your sons that boys and girls should be treated equally is the same as being guilt-tripped into becoming cannon fodder:
Others used the poster as an opportunity to rail against … marriage. The top comment in the thread, as I write this post, is this one.
Elezeid expanded on this theme:
Caspian_Drifter responded to the eeeevil poster with a rhetorical question that unintentionally helped to underscore the whole point of the campaign in the first place:
Seriously, ladies, why do gals like to go on and on about “equality” so much when your ladybrains weren’t even smart enough to come up with the idea in the first place? I mean, really, you ungrateful gals, you have a man/men to thank for that.
If I remember correctly, it was T. Reginald Equality who came up with the idea, with some help from his brother Ned (who suggested that he name it after himself).
Oh look, it’s Masculist Man!
Yes, because Tatiana Audi Badra is the only person who can decide if someone is a feminist. No one else.
You would be amusing if you weren’t so eager to have a gotcha moment at every single opportunity.
I, for one, have my signed note from Tatiana Audi Badra certifying me as a feminist. Don’t you?
This whole “omg white ribbon means white feather MISANDRY!” thing that the MRA’s have going is one of the most confusing things I’ve run across in a long time. I mean, that’s really stretching to try to find a way to be a victim.
So I decided to, you know, google “white ribbon symbolism” because I thought to myself, “hey self, maybe this is like all common knowledge and stuff”. And surprise, I found a wikipedia page dedicated to white ribbons!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_ribbon
Sadly, however, there is not a single mention of white ribbons being symbols of white feathers in order to oppress Teh Menz, or any other similar nonsense on that page. Aside from a mention of the white ribbon in this poster’s context (namely, the White Ribbon Campaign) we learn that, among other things, white ribbons are used to represent peace, teen pregnancy prevention awareness, and a third place finish at state fairs.
You read that right. Third place finish. I await the inevitable conclusion that white -> third place -> bronze -> copper is in bronze -> copper used in pennies -> Lincoln is on the penny -> Lincoln is also on the $5 bill -> FIVE DOLLAR BILLS ARE MISANDRY!
Who the hell is Tatiana Audi Badra? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of her.
Katz, I think having everyone read and/or watch whatever is being riffed/mocked first, by themselves, is a good starting point. Then reading it together… and I’m already caught up in your link and need to read further so I’m gonna have to ignore you and concentrate on your writing instead.
RE: katz
Hey LBT, when you MST things with other people, how do you go about it? Are these people you know offline, or do you talk over IM or in a chatroom or what?
I actually haven’t MSTed with anyone outside the system for a long time; I write with three MSTers regardless because I believe that’s a good number for some conversational back-and-forth without it becoming a game of “who the hell is that guy, anyway?”
Back when I DID MST with other people (oh, the bygone days of 2005), they were people offline who lived in my dorm. There were four of us, the Greenough Hall MSTers club, and we developed our own idiosyncratic personcluster around the computer. I was usually the typist, I had one MSTer over each shoulder, and then the fourth “invisible” MSTer usually flopped on the bed and curled around behind it. (How he was able to read the screen, I have no idea.)
After our summer courses ended and we returned to our parts of the country, we attempted a couple of times to do it via IM or the 2005-era version of Google doc edits, but it didn’t have the same back-and-forth, so it dropped soon after.
More recently, when my buddy Peter resurfaced to help MST the contract for 50 Shades of Bears, he made his own commentary separately, and I edited my own in to make it seem a little more natural.
RE: Michael Sandburg Olen
Actually, back in my MSTing days, we made it a tacit rule never to read/watch something beforehand. Stifled the spontaneity of our responses; we could always come back later if we thought of something truly witty. But then, I am not a comedian — it boggles me that somehow in the past decade people decided I was entertaining.
@katz
I always use pencils. I guess I haven’t been misandry-ing enough :'( Hopefully the hivemind will forgive me.
@auggz
A really boring person.
(I know everyone answered, I just had to throw my 2 cents in)
@kate
Hey, my brother uses reddit and he’s okay! It’s just the vocal, whiny (majority? I hope not). 😉
@cassandrasays
TMI time, but white pants let my periods show through 🙁
@grumpycatisagirls
Yes! You are the misandry-queen!(or do you prefer different gender pronouns? I don’t think I’ve ever asked. Either that or I don’t remember. Sorry.) *hails*
@hellkell
You’ll be glad to know that Fade was keeping the misandry up. She wore a white shirt yesterday.
(btw, my brother just tried to convince me his swimsuit counted, because it was light green. LIGHTGREEN IS NOT WHITE!) Sorry hyper XD
@cassandrasays
Dang I don’t have any nice white shoes 🙁
@katz
Yeah, don’t we get those when we enter the hivemind?
Kate, she must just be someone’s friend on facebook. Just searched the name and nothing came up. She is just some random person on facebook.
baileyrenee: Ah. I see. So the point of whatsisface asking Dave to tell her he is a feminist was… umm… uhhhh,,,,
Was there even a point to that? I sure as heck can’t see one.
…and I just realized that part of that screenshot from Masculist Man has Cathy “Hateful Bigot” Brennan’s BS in it.
It can safely be discarded as probably having nothing to do with actual feminism.
That woman is disgusting. She;s no feminist, she’s a hatemonger and a terrible human being.
Well, I’m entertained, at least. Never been a comedian myself, but I have read to live audiences. It is scary as shit until you find… I think you’d call it the rhythm of your own voice, and when you discover it, it will surprise you. You’ll find a certain cadence and how to twist it.
@Marie:
Perhaps your brother is the exception that proves the rule? I just know that anyone I’ve known who has said they are a redditor ends up displaying some pretty problematic behaviours when it comes to women, feminism, truth, or social justice. I’ve learned not to keep those people around. I deserve better friends than that!
Hi Kate, welcome to the club of “people who hate Cathy Brennan”, thoughts on Hugo. Fucking. Schwyzer?
We’re going to need t-shirts or something.
On topic…uh, what? How is this? I mean…it supports healthy male relationships!
Is the MRM upset that yet another mens group doesn’t portray men as vengeful, petty, angry, hateful, and coarse?
Is it that White Ribbon Project is not explicitly anti-feminist?
Is it that the White Ribbon Project is unaffiliated with the MRM and might steal the limelight?
Or is it that the White Ribbon Project clearly shows what the MRM has failed to be?
Jealousy, jealousy, you green-eyed monster!
@Argenti: Schwyzer? Ugh. He makes me want to puke, then rip off my own skin and soak it in bleach just because we share a planet. So, I guess he makes me feel pretty much the way he makes any rational, intelligent person feel.
Auggziliary, I remember being at a birthday party when I was maybe 10, where I was the only girl there. We were having a big water ballon/super soaker fight, and one boy threw a ballon at someone’s face or something and hurt the kid (I forget exactly what happened, I just know someone accidentally hurt someone else). The boy who threw the ballon was so upset he started crying, and all the other boys gathered around him and started comforting him, telling him not to worry and that the other kid was fine. One kid even put his arm around him.
I felt like I discovered some big “boy secret” that day, that boys can have moments like that.
@kate
You do deserve better friends than that 🙁 He’s the only one I know though, and everything else is just the guys who end up quoted here, so I may just be lucky with my redditors experience. Well, besides the guys who end up here, but everything is more bearable filtered through manboobz.
I don’t like Hugo Schwyzer because he’s an abusive asshole. While that is a sufficient reason to hate him, are there any other reasons why Schwyzer is so widely despised?
RE: auggziliary
Speaking of toxic male gender roles, did any of you ladies think that it was physically impossible for a man to cry as a girl?
No, but then, we had a younger brother. Our father has still never cried in front of us, but somehow, we never had the problem believing men cried.
RE: Michael Sondberg Olsen
Yeah, I’ve read aloud before too, waaaaay back in the day. I was that kid who went to our high school read-alouds and in-between poems about death and nature, I’d read toothbrush porn. I was kinda KNOWN for that one for a while.
@Ally: He’s an unrepentant, abusive asshole. His not-pologies are just disgusting. There’s also the way he comes across as thinking he’s some expert on the female mind. (That whole “Women have to slut-shame” thing is a good example) The guy’s an idiot, a liar and thinks that makes him a hero.
*an idiot, abusive and a liar…
@Alice:
“Those Yorkists were all manginas, ya know.”
But, but – Edward IV! ALPHA DUDE!
… though he married an older woman with two kids and no money, so maybe he was just a cunningly disguised beta mangina after all.
@auggziliary
When I was young, I had no problem with men and boys crying, mostly because as a “boy” myself, I cried a lot when I was teased by family members. I was very sensitive. My father has also cried a lot, so that’s another reason I was accustomed to the idea of men and boys crying.
C. Brenn*n (she googles herself way too much and spews her transphobic shit on the clean carpet – not writing her full name) is, as far as I am aware, more vocally despised by feminists than by MRAs by a long shot. Which would make her little bigot-crew being the Ultimate Moderators of Feminism a bit ironic. (this is the first time I see an MRA mentioning her, but some probably use her as a representative of all feminists)
She has the honor of being on the top 5 of the people I loathe the most.
@Argenti
Hugo. Fucking. Schwyzer. isn’t on my top 5, but he scores pretty high. Another one who, according to MRAs, gets to decide who’s a True Feminist.
