Long Weekend Open Thread

longweekendlc2

Like a lot of people in the US of A, I am taking a long weekend. Posting may be a little light for a bit. So here’s an open thread for everyone else taking a long weekend. Or not. Use this thread for anything that’s not personal. Like misogyny, politics, kitties, you know the drill. (Though kitties are welcome in all threads, of course.)

I am hoping my long weekend turns out a bit better than that of the people in the Australian movie of that name from 1978, which I keep meaning to see. Apparently their little beach vacation doesn’t go so well, and they are attacked by … nature? At one point, I believe, they face off against an enraged dugong. (No, really.) The movie was recently remade, but apparently the remake wasn’t as good.

Stay tuned for more reviews of movies I haven’t seen and that I’m just giving vague impressions of based on things I’ve heard somewhere.

I’m changing the subject but wow, curiosity drove me over to AVfM, which isn’t exactly somewhere I’m prone to visit, and in under about 90 seconds of having the site open I’m reading talk of how a future of violence and executions may very well be on the horizon. The author, let it be known, doesn’t want “Depraved and Futile, lying idiot-fuck” to take this and claim he’d advocating for such things, do take note. He just thinks “elected representatives dragged by citizens from their offices and executed on the front lawns of legislatures” is inevitable. So: paranoid, but not violent! Gotcha.

Seriously the first thing I clicked on and we have “public, impromptu executions” and violent direct action. That didn’t take long! I did click on that story because I recognized “JTO” from here, though.

It’s also so entertaining how poor they are as writers. In their call to action regarding the Edmonton “Don’t Be That Girl” campaign they urge their band of brothers to “strike the iron while hot.”

Why am I not surprised, HM? Did JohntheOtter write that one?

Speaking of paranoia, or not, do a virus check after you visit that site. The MRAs aren’t the only nasties who inhabit that sort of space. This is prolly redundant, too, but don’t ever leave comments or anything there, either. Doxxing and stalking are among their preferred tactics.

too – either – oh well, I was talking about things being redundant. :S

“Strike the iron while hot”?

I now have an image of them whacking an anvil, or maybe an electric iron, with their rageboners.

Heheheh …

Don’t worry, I’m not going to get involved with them.

JTO wrote the Call to Ball with the Glenn Beckish nightmare predictions about inevitable executions and revolt. Robert O’Hara is the one who wants everyone to slap hot irons for the cause.

Maybe they mean that while you are hot (with rage, as all good MRAs are after reading AVFM) you should go punch an iron as an act of protest against the fact that the universe has failed to provide you with a woman to use it to make your shirts look nice for work.

Kittehserf

If they’re going to run around punching irons, I’m quite happy to carry one – as long as it’s turned on.

Ah, I love the smell of MRAs’ scorched knuckles in the morning.

You get a HB10 and command her to strike the iron. AlphaBRO.

Actually as women and feminists it’s our duty to do stuff for them, so I’ll even provide them with examples that adhere to the already-established style guidelines that they seem to be using (I’m convinced that this manual must exist – it’s Strunk&White for raving misogynists).

When the shit hits the radiator, men must put the pedal to the deck chair. Only thus will feminism be defeated.

Kittehserf

I don’t want to know how shit came to hit the radiator.

Am I the only one who thinks of pencils when that “HB” thing comes up?

Strike the iron while hot

Maybe they meant forge the iron while hot? Idk about English, but at least in Swedish “you gotta forge the iron while it’s hot” is a saying that means you gotta catch the opportunity, not wait until it’s too late.

It’s “strike while the iron’s hot” here, but that makes a certain amount of sense, maybe they just jumbled the two? (I’m probably being too generous huh?)

It reads ESLish to me, but I haven’t read the rest of the comment for context.

So, I finally started reading that popehat thread and like five comments in we get this, and a bunch of actual non-troll commenters all “THIS”ing it, and I wanted to smash something.

And now THIS. I’m gonna have to put this thread off fir a bit, cos apparently I’m oversensitive today

@Shadow, I don’t think I’ve been able to get more than about 20 comments in on that Popehat thread without throwing something. Mostly it’s been cat toys, so at least there’s no damage from the throwing.

@cloudiah

For real I haven’t even managed to get to the more rage-inducing troll comments. I want to set an internet decree that you don’t get to compare one-ism to another unless you’re actually affected by both of them.

RE: Shadow

You’re still tougher than me. I ain’t even touching that thread at all. I’m sure I’ve heard all the arguments and earnestness and “BUT MY PENIS” before. It was rage-inducing enough coming from people who thought they LIKED me; I’ve no interest in hearing it from strangers.

We should collect a list of the most awkward MRA metaphors.

“The ballerina is a stamen of privilege” (referring to the logo for Occupy Wall Street) will always and forever be my favorite.

I’ll cut Ken some slack for a larger sense of Pollack in other threads, and not being attentive to all the comments (from how much past 900 it went I suspect he took the weekend off, and didn’t read them all closely).

Would I trust him not to harass? No. Will I call him a sexual harasser straight up? No.

Do I think his definition of harassment is acceptable? In particulars; not in the policies he desires, nor in what he seems to think ought to be acceptable behavior in the here and now.

I am pretty sure he would like behavior I think is harassing to be acceptable. Not if I have any input.

pecunium

That is, would I trust Pollock: I have no reason to think Ken White is in any way a sexually harassing person.

As to the striking of iron, when forging one must strike while the iron is hot. When I was studying about smithing one of the aphorisms was, “there are only two sins in smithing, the first is to underprice your wares, the other to strike cold iron”.

Having done some smithing (and known a fair number of smiths), cold iron is almost unmanageable, and it doesn’t behave well in the finished tool (this is not, of course,, true for things one has chosen to work cold… that’s just a sin for the excess in time, unless it’s something which can’t be worked hot).

Yeah, the stamen of privilege is hella awkward. But for sheer WTF I gotta go with the Gleaming Opulent Horse of Superior Aryan Intellect.

Oh, and some asshole just called my office to yell at me because we were calling some third office to confirm a meeting he said he’d scheduled (they hadn’t heard of it, of course). Obviously this guy was upset because he wanted to control our flow of information and decided the best way to do that was vent his spleen in my direction. I stood my ground and told him repeatedly that I couldn’t talk to him without his attorney’s permission (no one ever said anything about listening, heh heh), but it was a situation in which he was totally and objectively in the wrong, and he couldn’t reach me or affect me, yet I’m still (slightly) shaking from it.

Big hugs to survivors everywhere!
