Thanks to the hard work of Argenti Aertheri and the suggestions of various other Boobzers, the Man Boobz survey is now up and ready to be taken. It will give me — and all of you — a better picture of just what sort of people read Man Boobz on a regular basis. It’s completely anonymous. Go take it! It will only take a few minutes.
I will probably leave it up for a couple of days, and will report the results here as soon as the numbers are crunched.
I think pretty much any other question you might have about it will probably be answered on the survey itself, so hop to it!
Thanks Argenti!

What’s at-will employment?
Your employer can fire you at any time, they don’t need a reason, and you have no legal recourse if they do.
Yeah, at-will employment has been a huge culture shock for us as well!
@dustydeste
Maybe stupid question, but did you change your wordpress profile to automatically fill in the username you want?
I’m really curious now to know if those hits from Sri Lanka was basically just Explore Nature and me, or if there are lurkers from Sri Lanka.
Ok, it’s beyond obvious that any stats using class will need a disclaimer about how the class variable results are kinda iffy. In any case, that variable has a nice bell curve to it, and about 30% of us answered working or lower class. So no, our chunk of feminism is not a middle class or higher thing. What is surprising is that we have a handful of upper class people. Then again, with almost a thousand replies at this point it was almost inevitable. Things surprise me that probably shouldn’t.
And yep LBT, that’s the one, thanks!
Huh? Nobody in Sri Lanka yet, did I accidentally list it?
Any upper class cis hetero men? Or are our upper class contributors mostly women, gay/bi, trans*, or a combo of these?
gamblingdementor — cuz I’m an idiot who lumped general communism with other socialism. Sorry!
Did you get a Welcome Package yet?
(I haz a theory, but will probably be rebuked because over many people we’re bound to have at least one really unusual individual.)
@Nepenthe
Thanks for the clarification! Maybe I thought that because when my sister went to US people would start speaking to her in Spanish all the time.
BlackBloc — give me a sec, that’s going to be a little complex to check.
You can wait until you do the full survey results though, I’m just curious. 🙂
@Shadow: I don’t thiiiink I did anything… I think it’s mainly that I was commenting here without a WordPress account under the nym girlofthegaps, but then when I registered, that was taken (probably by me a few years ago, lol, but I can’t remember the password or email that I used), and now sometimes the site gets confused about which one I am.
Usually the switch happens if I’ve logged into one of my periphery Gmail accounts, and WordPress asks me to log in again when I submit a comment. Once that comment gets submitted (as girlofthegaps), it reverts to the dustydeste nym for all subsequent comments.
One, and he’s white. Two cis white upper class men, but the other is bi/pan/omnisexual.
(FTR, if either of them see this, I can’t tell who you are, just what you put and with only a handful of upper class people, that’s a fair amount. Sorry if this is squicky but I promise all I can see is your answers.)
The other four are cis women btw, but two checked non-white things on the r/mr question. And *scratches head* apparently people are checking multiple of the gay/lesbian, bi/pan/omni and heterosexual boxes…odd…
BlackBloc — I can filter what we have so far when the parameters are that narrow. Asking me the religions of the middle class people would be another matter!
An off-the-cuff comment by my dad, made years ago (and could well be a conspiracy theory):
Around WWI, there was a marketing effort to make university very attractive to young people so that they would get off the farms, experience city life, and not want to go back, leaving farmers to choice but to (eventually) sell out to the agribusiness industry. So they started this meme that going to university is ALWAYS a better option, and that you were a failure as a parent if your kids didn’t go.
Dunno if it’s true that it was a conscious effort, but it seems to have been fairly effective if it was.
“And you guys have no idea how happy it makes me to say you enjoyed it or that it was well designed. After the religion section turned my brain to jello, and all the discussion of class, I’m more than a bit worried I failed at my task.”
It’s pretty hard to be 100% inclusive, especially in such a short time frame. But I think you did a pretty good job. I don’t think I’ve taken a survey that accounted for so many before this one.
One thing this survey also reminded me of was my tendency to think of myself as middle class and put that down, even though I never have been, and neither has my family (they also consider themselves middle class). I caught myself this time, though!

Oh, you mean my life. Seriously, I was flabbergasted that anything OTHER than that existed; I didn’t know till I hit New Zealand. (In my experience, work is generally trading your mental health for food, housing, and money–and you can usually only obtain two of three.)
@Argenti
Sorry, I should have clarified, that’s in response to David’s comment about where he gets hits from.
@dustydeste
If you click on your name in the top right corner of the window, it will take you to your account settings. Click on “Public Profile” and check if your public display name is the one you want. If it is, then I’m stumped because that’s the limit of my wordpress knowledge 😛
RE: Argenti
Glad I got the story right!
Wow, amazed at how many people are filling out the survey! I’m inclined to let the survey run through monday to catch people who haven’t checked in on MB over the weekend, though that could be extended if we keep getting more results.
Argenti, if you suddenly start getting a bunch of troll results, you should probably shut it down then.
Other thoughts: Hispanic is obviously a problematic category, especially cross-culturally. In the US, people generally do see it as a clear category, but demographers also classify many Hispanics as white and use categories like “white Hispanic” and “non-Hispanic white.”
As for nationality, I’ll put up some data on traffic by country when I put up the survey results. If we want to see how many *people* are in different questions I can do a quick one-question followup poll using wordpress’ little poll gadget, or something else if it doesn’t allow me enough categories.
This whole experience makes me think I should do polls on a regular basis here, at least quick little one or two question polls if not necessarily big ones like this.
@Shadow: Yeah, my public display name is set to dustydeste *throws up hands* Who knows?
Shadow, well, I’ve gotten 631 hits in the last year from Sri Lanka, which I’m guessing is probably, well, you and maybe a scattering of people who’ve looked at MB once or twice.
What happened to Explore Nature anyway? Did he get lost?
