So here’s an interesting chart. Guess what it represents?
A) The membership of the David Duke Fan Club
B) The racial breakdown of the most successful Liberace impersonators
C) The demographics of the Men’s Rights subreddit
Well, ok, that was too easy. It is of course all of the above. I’m guessing. It’s definitely C, at least, as this chart was prepared to show the results of the 2013 Men’s Rights subreddit demographic survey.
Now, you might say, well, isn’t Reddit itself a pretty white place? And you would be right. But the Men’s Rights subreddit seems to be a bit whiter — and a lot less black — than Reddit as a whole, if Quantcast’s estimates of Reddit’s overall ethnic breakdown are accurate.
In other completely non-surprising news, 89% of Men’s Rights Redditors are men. And a lot of them are libertarians. MRAs complain endlessly that we pigeonhole them as a bunch of entitled white dudes. They’re really not doing much to challenge that assumption.
The most important issue to these fellas (and the small minority that aren’t fellas)? Survey says: False rape accusations.
Other critical issues to the Men’s Rightsers include “custody rights” (which is a bit odd because 92% of those surveyed have no kids), “legal discrimination” (whatever that means), “education discrimination” (this is a thing?), and “male disposability.”
“Male birth control” and “paper abortion,” while relatively less important to the Men’s Rightsers, each got hundreds of votes.
I’m surprised “friendzoning” isn’t at the top of the list, but unfortunately it wasn’t one of the choices. I blame misandry.
Fuck, I meant to include it and forgot, thank you.
thekidwiththereplacablehead — adding to smart ass question!
And perhaps visible/invisible with disability?
Mental issues are not visible, but neither is firbomyalgia.
They were all jokey, so use anything that appeals!
I <3 "interested only in my partner".
"Married to a king" works for me (and if anyone else answers it – LOL!)
Or arthritis. Or primary lateral sclerosis.
Also, adding “a dinosaur” to smart ass category, because RAWWWR!!
Maybe “Alone with cats” should be in as a smartarse relationship answer too. Cos we’re all going to be, apparently.
(Cats or nonhumanoverlords of choice, of course.)
visible/invisible disability added, as is “interested only in my partner”
You guys are seriously massively helpful!
I love this – the smart arse category’s going to be bigger than all the rest! 😀
Now I’m off to celebrate Midsummer’s Eve with a bunch of friends. On an island. Surrounded by water. Hey, if I drown, won’t this post be eerie?
That’s just silly, since I’m David. Or possibly one of his cats. I’m not really sure.
Since David is cats, it’s the same thing.
Have a wonderful Midsummer Eve celebration!
(Just make sure it’s Misummer and not Midsomer, ‘cos you know, 90% of the inhabitants get bumped off.)
Well that would have worked better if I’d typed Midsummer and not Misummer.
Radical Parrot — you can be both! And pirate dinosaur married to a king! (Have fun!)
Kitteh — yup 🙂
In seriousness though, how should I handle collapsing the ethnicities to make the options comparable to reddit’s? And what political categories should I include? (Ooo, it’s daylight not-here, so I can get useful non-US answers!)
So Shocking news……A sub division of a site that is very strongly white and male has a mostly white and male following. This is earth shattering news. The men’s Rights Reddit very closely mirrors Reddit as a whole….so shocking…..This is really the big story.
Argenti, can’t help on that one, I don’t look at reddit. Given we’re avoiding things like “black people are American” that seemed to come out of this, how comparable will they be anyway?
The political categories are tricky too – would I be right in guessing reddit’s very US-centric there?
Back in a sec, I must get slippers. It hit freezing here the last two nights and it feels like it’s going to do it again.
Actually, if you read the post, it doesn’t closely mirror.
reddit is 77 percent white: the subreddit is 86 percent white. the subreddit has about 11 percent (7.7 = ten percent of reddit, so the subreddit is +9 = >10 percent) more whites than reddit as a whole.
That’s a non-trivial difference.
So! Math!
I’ll spare you the boring details, but the odds of that percentage being white are just barely outside statistically significant — probability of it being chance is 5.7%. 5% is significant.
Odds of that percentage being black? 0.01% So yeah.
For comparison:
Asian: 30% (aka entirely likely the minor difference is due to random chance)
Hispanic: 0.01%
Other: also 0.01%
Note, 0.01% is as small as these numbers go.
So yeah, they’re not overwhelming white, just overwhelming a different minority make-up and very nearly overwhelmingly white.
And yes, that’s comparing their results to reddit results, not the general population. (Which is, btw, no more white than the US population, p = 37%)
Learn to math.
Pecunium — it’s ever so slightly not non-trivial. Because I love math…actually, I rounded…let me try that again…
Ah, never mind, still just over statistical significance.
Also, good morning, tell me you slept because I didn’t.
Oh and that’s using the percents, it may be different with the actual numbers (because 85% of <100 is not the same as 77% of hundreds, maybe thousands)
And never mind again! I just clicked through to the survey, it’s 85% of 600, which compared to a general 77% is strongly significant — another round of 0.01% odds.
Hey, I’ve been lurking for a couple of days and just wanted to say that I’m on my way to fall head over heels for this blog and all the commenters. Who are all Dave. And cats.
Thank f*ck I’m not allergic.
I’m also all for the poll and to get a good comparison to the reddit poll you could have two questions:
-1) The options for Hispanic, Black, Souther/Nothern Asian etc… that you all came up with here
-2) given these options what would you identify with? And give the same options as in the reddit poll.
Hope that makes sense 🙂
RiliKat — first, have your Welcome Package!
Second, omfgs thank you. Simple, yet brilliant. (Brilliant things usually are after all!)
I really want to make a “technically correct: the best kind of correct” joke in reference to the statistical significance question, but it’s 4 in the morning so instead I merely present the reference without comment.
Also, this is interesting:
http://mentalfloss.com/article/50202/why-are-white-people-called-caucasian
I’ve always wondered why my western european mutt self would be called “Caucasian,” and apparently it makes as little sense as I’ve always thought it did.
Welcome, RiliiKat! 🙂
