Mighty White of You

mrdatarace

So here’s an interesting chart. Guess what it represents?

A) The membership of the David Duke Fan Club

B) The racial breakdown of the most successful Liberace impersonators

C) The demographics of the Men’s Rights subreddit

Well, ok, that was too easy. It is of course all of the above. I’m guessing. It’s definitely C, at least, as this chart was prepared to show the results of the 2013 Men’s Rights subreddit demographic survey.

Now, you might say, well, isn’t Reddit itself a pretty white place? And you would be right. But the Men’s Rights subreddit seems to be a bit whiter — and a lot less black — than Reddit as a whole, if Quantcast’s estimates of Reddit’s overall ethnic breakdown are accurate.

redditoverallrace

In other completely non-surprising news, 89% of Men’s Rights Redditors are men. And a lot of them are libertarians. MRAs complain endlessly that we pigeonhole them as a bunch of entitled white dudes. They’re really not doing much to challenge that assumption.

The most important issue to these fellas (and the small minority that aren’t fellas)? Survey says: False rape accusations.

Other critical issues to the Men’s Rightsers include “custody rights” (which is a bit odd because 92% of those surveyed have no kids), “legal discrimination” (whatever that means), “education discrimination” (this is a thing?), and “male disposability.”

“Male birth control” and “paper abortion,” while relatively less important to the Men’s Rightsers, each got hundreds of votes.

I’m surprised “friendzoning” isn’t at the top of the list, but unfortunately it wasn’t one of the choices. I blame misandry.

Pecunium — Finland, because they seem to top every social justice // economics // etc scale. Except the “tolerable weather” one!

Everyone — so, surprise surprise! I love demographics. Give me your questions and suggestions for answers and I’ll whip something up. Eg:

Age ranges of 5? 10? Years? Under 20, 20-30 etc? Under 25, 25-30?
How to handle gender? Do male/female/non-binary and trans* as two questions? Cis male / cis female / trans* male / trans* female / non-binary?
Sexuality: gay/lesbian (combined or separate?), bi/pan (again, combined or not?), straight…include asexual or do something related to number of potential partners? (Eg none/asexual, monogamous, poly?)
Include a favorite animal question? 🙂

I’m totally up for doing this and crunching the demographics versus general population (average US, Canada, EU and y’all down under since that’s where most of us are?)

Math! Let me do some!

I would totally be willing to live in Finland if it wasn’t for the following problems.

1. What do you mean there’s no sunlight in the middle of the day during part of the winter?
2. Holy crap, that’s a lot of snow.
3. Spices, why have you deserted us?

Nawh, you’re only the third clearly a sock to say exactly that. Anyone else sick of “I’d love to conserve with MRAL to prove we’re different people”?

Let me guess, you’re 11 km apart? (*sigh* anyone remember where that started so it can be added to the welcome package? We collect inside jokes)

Troll Alert!

God’s Fool doing the, “Yay! Christian radicalism is awesome!” thing is bullshit.
Because seriously, Ramsey’s actions prove what, exactly? I can’t help out a man in trouble because the world would come to an end? We’re suppose to help people in trouble — that’s the decent thing to do.

PPT is back? Oh Joy, oh Rapture.

Oh hell, the rapture ain’t happenin’. Then again, neither is PPT, more same-old same-old. I like the pointless turns of phrase (Christian neodadaism? It almost rises to clever, but fails; just a tad below risible).

Of course there would be a lower number of blacks given how a number of MRAs find the very idea of a (probably white) woman having any contact with black cock is disgusting. And that women who do have romantic or sexual relations with them must all be stupid whores.

That and MRAs don’t like black women either.

For news of actual merit: There has been (so it seems) a breakthrough in Fibromyalgia research: They think they have found the mechanism, which means they may be able to devise actual treatment for symptomology.

God’s Fool, Je vous accuse d’être MRAL. Glad we got that out of the way.

Kittehserf, I lol at most of their stuff. This is another good one.

The atheism sub has the most overlapping users, followed by the libertarian sub.

That explains A LOT about the crap going on in the online atheist communities.

Dave,
Again, I want to make clear that I haven’t read the MRA Reddit group(s) so I can’t speak to that; but what I can most definitely speak to was a very interesting piece/poll that appeared on the Good Men Project about two years ago; here’s what it indicated as to the top ten Men’s Rights issues:

http://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/the-top-10-issues-of-mens-rights/

10.) The Male Gender Role (4%)

9.) Negative Portrayal in the Media (5%)

8.) Educating Boys (5%)

7.) Making Government Programs Gender-Neutral or Accompanied by a Male Equivalent (6.2%)

6.) Better Treatment of Men Regarding False Accusations (7%)

5.) Reproductive Rights (7%)

4.) Removing the Notion That All Men Are Potential Rapists/Pedophiles (9%)

3.) Anti-Male Double Standards (10%)

2.) Feminism (11%)

1.) Fathers’ Rights (20%)

As you can see, false rape charges are on the list, but comes in at #6, not #1 per the Reddit you’re talking about, and is definitely important (will explain how and why in a separate comment). All of the other items you mentioned that appeared on the MRA Reddit survey appear on the GMP one as well; as you can see above, the #1 concern per the GMP poll, was father’s rights (which would entail/concern child custody, child support, etc.). I’ll have more to say about this in a separate post too.

Your being puzzled as to why Men who reported not having kids being concerned about father’s/custody rights and so forth, don’t strike me as odd in the least; Women who don’t or are done having kids nevertheless are intensely concerned with abortion rights for Women overall. If that isn’t “odd” why would the MRA group(s) on Reddit or anywhere else be considered “odd”?

Similarly, your being “puzzled” about concerns on the part of Reddit MRAers regarding “legal and education discrimination” are covered by the GMP MRA poll as well, and given that you’ve both written on the matter of MRAers and that your piece was featured in the GMP Poll, I would be surprised if you weren’t aware of that. My guess is that you’re just attempting to mock the concern period rather than being honestly in the dark as to what those issues entail or mean to MRAs.

I think the GMP poll above pretty much covers the main areas that most concern MRAs. And I think they not only have direct impact on Black Men, but I would argue in many ways, moreso. In the next few comments I’ll layout how.

I will continue my activism here until the real MRAL comes back or until you ludicrous dunderheads retract this accusation.

1: This is what you call activism?
2: Al was banned, so he ain’t coming back (at least not to stay, he can sock, but he gets caught).
3: That means you won’t be here until he gets back. None of the contrarian types can hack it. Even the “best” (NWO, Brandon, DKM) wear themselves out. Some of them (e.g. Brandon) get tired of being handed their ass, and step over the line. Others retreat, necroing old threads, in the hope of getting in a little mal mot, but even that fails them (as it lacks the sense of high drama a comment in an active thread has, and they still get called on their shit), and they wither away.

So, Mr. “I’ll be here forever”, why did you feel the need to change your handle?

@(Ms.?) Tracy:
“We don’t blame women/feminism for our problems, for starters. Plus, we have kitties.”

O: LOL. Nice try and your dodge is noted; nevertheless the point is made: chances are very, very high that the Manboobz audience is easily as White as the MRA Reddit Dave is talking about. Moreover, a very strong argument can be made that the Feminist organizations are also very White, AND, they have a long history of tension regarding their Black “sisters” – Audrey Lourde’s travails come easily to mind, for example; Jezebel’s had a number of flare-ups along these lines as well, along with Feministing and Feministe, as I recall.

Oh, and Feminists blame Men/Patriarchy for their problems; in fact, in a very real sense, the Feminists/MRAs are mirror images of each other. Both are very White, and both aren’t exactly welcoming with open arms the interests of Black and other People of Color’s concerns (unless it happens to fit their overall narrative).

Those poll’s numbers don’t add up to 100%. What were the other ~15%?

Obsidian Files: More lack of desire for a real conversation. The question is about the subreddit. the GMP doesn’t address that. You can’t even stick to a simple question, how are you going to cope when you actually say something worthy of response?

No, it isn’t odd…it’s called empathy. Do you know what empathy is? Everyone should have the same freedoms, the same bodily autonomy.

“Perhaps Obsidian Files doesn’t like to think his MRA mates are racist.”

O: Actually, I am very aware of the racial/racist nature of the Manosphere – but I could make just as strong a case for the very same thing obtaining in the Femosphere, and this, despite their loud and florid protestations to the contrary. In this, at least the Manosphere is a far sight more honest about theirs.

The 11 km thing. A wonderfully funny textbook example both of inadvisably lying when it’s obvious you’re going to get caught out and of doubling down afterwards with an even more ridiculous story.

1) which is why there’s a parallel Womanist movement.
2) oh gods not Jezebel, anyone who publishes Hugo Motherfucking Schwyzer has blown all feminist cred out the window
3) I’m working on making a survey, cuz it’s this or reading more of LBT’s writing and I need a break from being emotionally punched in the gut

O: I wouldn’t know – I didn’t commission the survey and don’t know its design or how it was done. I’d recommend you contact the author of the article that originally appeared on the GMP.

Why would women who don’t have kids be concerned about abortion rights? Because misandry, obviously. There is no other possible explanation as to why a woman who doesn’t have kids might want to keep abortion available as a potential option.

Thanks katz, will go drop that in the welcome package comments, unless you want to do it?
