So here’s an interesting chart. Guess what it represents?
A) The membership of the David Duke Fan Club
B) The racial breakdown of the most successful Liberace impersonators
C) The demographics of the Men’s Rights subreddit
Well, ok, that was too easy. It is of course all of the above. I’m guessing. It’s definitely C, at least, as this chart was prepared to show the results of the 2013 Men’s Rights subreddit demographic survey.
Now, you might say, well, isn’t Reddit itself a pretty white place? And you would be right. But the Men’s Rights subreddit seems to be a bit whiter — and a lot less black — than Reddit as a whole, if Quantcast’s estimates of Reddit’s overall ethnic breakdown are accurate.
In other completely non-surprising news, 89% of Men’s Rights Redditors are men. And a lot of them are libertarians. MRAs complain endlessly that we pigeonhole them as a bunch of entitled white dudes. They’re really not doing much to challenge that assumption.
The most important issue to these fellas (and the small minority that aren’t fellas)? Survey says: False rape accusations.
Other critical issues to the Men’s Rightsers include “custody rights” (which is a bit odd because 92% of those surveyed have no kids), “legal discrimination” (whatever that means), “education discrimination” (this is a thing?), and “male disposability.”
“Male birth control” and “paper abortion,” while relatively less important to the Men’s Rightsers, each got hundreds of votes.
I’m surprised “friendzoning” isn’t at the top of the list, but unfortunately it wasn’t one of the choices. I blame misandry.
@Argenti
Wow. Would RationalWiki’s list of political philosophies help? Wikipedia probably has something similar that’s needlessly long.
@Kitten:
Plus, it’s not just that they want to put the onus on the potential victims rather than the perps, it’s also always complete bullshit advice. Obviously there’s no advice in the word that can make one safe from rape, but if we were to actually deal out advice to women that might at least somewhat lower their risk, it would be this:
Be a bitch. Do not be polite or accomodating to creepy dudes. Thinking about this: http://yesmeansyesblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/14/the-boiling-frog-principle-of-boundary-violation/ (And yeah, you can follow the links on that post back to actual research on rapists and how they pick their victims.)
And, yeah, this happens to coincide with what feminists tell women, even if they don’t phrase it as anti-rape-advice: You have the right to set boundaries. You’re not responsible for protecting creepy dude’s fee-fees. Etc.
Obviously no anti-feminist would ever support giving out that advice. Instead they just spout the usual completely unsupported claims according to which one is less likely to be raped if one wears non-slutty clothes and stay away from strangers.
Is there an option to tick more than one in those lists, Argenti? One category doesn’t necessarily exclude another.
225 and I still have paganism left. And parody religions because I’ll be fucking damned if FSM doesn’t make the list!
You can check ALL THE THINGS. If you want to check off what’ll be 250+ options.
Dvarghundspossen – yes, and teaching someone how to be aware of red flags and predatory behaviour (which is the sort of thing given one-on-one and not unsolicited advice given to a rape victim, not “why didn’t you?” rubbish) isn’t the sort of thing they’re talking about, either. Their “advice” is all about restricting women’s lives more and more, and blaming us when the (as you pointed out) totally ineffective strategies don’t work.
Plus, of course, it’s all strangers in the bushes stuff, or strangers at the nightclub – the rapes that take place at home, that are committed by intimates or friends or acquaintances – they’re never mentioned at all.
225+43=268
Add in the parodies I’m about to type up and it’ll be 278.
And then I am finally done with religion! (Pun utterly intended)
For a healthy dose of brain-bleach, here’s a baby echidna (a puggle) that was brought to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney last year. I saw him in a doco last night and found this little clip from his early days. Soooo cute!
http://youtu.be/SGleaTJoy1U
Ceiling Cat, Basement Cat and the Great Furred Ones had just better be in there!
283 then!
In easier things, should I add a question about socio-economic class (eg, poverty, middle class, etc); and “rural, suburban, urban”?
And yes lowquacks, your list helps, thank you.
Should I put Jewish as an ethnicity?
@Argenti
Sounds good. Also sounds like a massive survey. Will you have any way of collating the religious data, so you could have a vague idea of major groups (Christian, non-religious, pagan, Islam, whatever)? It’d be nice to get some graphs or what have you out of the thing that actually show something.
Socio-economic class would be good.
I’ve probably missed this, but is there something basic about education – secondary, tertiary, and so on?
LOL missed this before – maybe there should be an “ALL THE THINGS” box at the end of the lists!

Yeah the MASSIVE LIST is subgroups from a nice little list. Mostly I apparently found it easier to type in nearly 300 religions than to make judgement calls on which were likely to be represented (like, I have Masai mythology on there…most Masai have no internet access…)
“Socio-economic class would be good.
I’ve probably missed this, but is there something basic about education – secondary, tertiary, and so on?”
Shall add both…once my brain recovers a bit. Primary, secondary, tertiary // college // university, graduate, doctorate? That sound about right cross culturally?
Sounds pretty right from my perspective. 🙂
@Cassandra:
“I skimmed past most of boring troll’s self-promotion attempts because they were making me want to take a nap, but this part jumped out at me because it’s hilarious.”
O: Only those who resort to namecalling because they have no cogent counterargument have to stoop so low…
“You read it here, folks. Among the many crimes of which feminism is guilty is the fact that we didn’t build time machines and use them to go back and make our moms marry shorter men.”
O: Your penchant for intellectually dishonest hyperbole is noted.
You may go back to sleep now…
O.
@Kittensherf
“He’s one of the trolls who’s not even amusing to read, he’s just a dirtbag misogynist who is booooooooooring. Nothing new there.”
O: Where is this proof that I am a misognynist? Simply because you say so?
“Anyone else think it’s banhammer time?”
O: Again, because you can’t come back with a better counterargument?
O.
““Anyone else think it’s banhammer time?”
O: Again, because you can’t come back with a better counterargument?”
You read the comment policy? Tedious is a bannable offense.
Survey!
Class added, education added, rural->urban added. I’m down to just political views!!
Well, and anything else y’all throw at me. But really, after the whole religion thing, yeah, throw it out there!
@Kittensherf
“Godalmighty, we had a terrific thread about our survey going,and it’s been taken over by attention whore troll. David, can you ban Mr Wall of Text or at least moderate him until he learns not to be more boring than Some Guy and B****** put together?”
O: Why? Why can’t you simply pull together your own demo survey, without needing to reference anyone else? The MRA Reddit nor the GMP MRA survey didn’t need to discuss you guys. There’s nothing preventing you guys from putting a demographic survey together. Let’s find out some very basic info, like the info Dave has up about the MRA Reddit right now:
Race
Gender
Political Affiliation
Education Level
Occupation
Top Ten Issues
Real simple, folks! I have argued that the Manboobz readership (and definitely regular commenters) are easily as White (if not Whiter than) as the very MRA Reddit Dave and the rest of you are upbraiding; yet, your Whiteness isn’t as bad as theirs. Riiight…
O.
“Race
Gender
Political Affiliation
Education Level
Occupation
Top Ten Issues”
Ok, someone has clearly not been paying attention! I’m doing political affiliation right now.
And if anyone wants to try Top Ten without a fill in the blank option, I’m game, throw out wtf you want listed!
I’m not touching occupation though, we’ve got class, and I am debating asking whether working // unemployed // disabled // retired (except, I think pecunium gets like, three of those, depending how you define the last two)
@Argenti:
“Off the top of my head, spread awareness about HIV/AIDS testing and treatment.”
O: Something which is to be commended, but which also tends to be an issue within the Gay community for the most part…
“Repealing DADT, as it made various sex acts, ones more often engaged in by GLB people, but also straight people, um, FUCK!”
O: Are you saying that DADT played a role in more straight people in the US military have sex? If so, is there any way we can assess that independently by way of any surveys or something?
“Pecunium explained this to me in detail and now I can’t recall if it was a dishonorable discharge or not. In any case, it did affect straight people too. Less so, but yeah, “affect straight people as well” = yep. Striking down sodomy laws, which, again, also covered straight couples engaging in anal sex.”
O: OK…if you say so. I don’t recall hearing or reading about any earth-shattering legal cases in the news involving straight couples and sodomy laws. But again, OK.
I was just hoping for something a bit more substantial, given the declarations on the part of some here in the forum along these lines, that queer issues had such critical import for straights. My understanding is that the US military makes up about 3% of the US population at present. HIV/AIDS, even at its height in terms of infection rates, etc, didn’t makeup a sizable minority of people in the country. Hmm.
O.
Ok, actually, I’m taking a break for more IS, because LBT’s writing is way more interesting than pouring over political views.
…do you live under a rock?
