Men’s Human Rights Movement fights oppression with new oppression-fighting term “Rapetard.”

The Men's Human Rights Movement: Heading towards inevitable victory.
The Men’s Human Rights Movement: Heading towards inevitable victory.

Our dear friends over at A Voice for Men, the thought-leaders of the Glorious New Men’s Human Rights of The 21st Century Human Rights Movement With Girl Writes What (GNMHROT21CHRMWGWW) have been trying to introduce a new word into the vernacular, as part of their broad-based campaign for the betterment of human rights. That word? Rapetard.

While the portmanteau word has been floating around for some time, with assorted definitions, it took on its modern, human-rightsy definition in mid-April in a little-seen YouTube video by a fellow calling himself “Dick Magnum,” who defined it thusly:

An individual who, for reasons related to intellectual, emotional or moral deficits, cannot distinguish between questioning [the idea of] “rape culture” and supporting rape.

It was picked up in an AVFM post titled “Beware the Rapetard Society” about a week after that. Soon other AFVM writers seemed to forget Mr. Magnum’s careful definition, adopting it as their go-to epithet for feminists they don’t like. Which is pretty much all of them.

In a post having nothing to do with rape or rape culture, Paul Elam talked about “dumbing things down so that even a rapetard could understand.” In the comments to that post, AVFM contributor Dan Perrins joked about “rapetarded quote mining expedition[s].” And in a post yesterday, AVFM’s “Andy Bob” attacked Australian comedian Catherine Deveny for an assortment of alleged offenses against decency  — including using the term “retard” – in a post that referred to her as a “rapetard” four times, including once in the title.

You might think that combining the word “rape” with an ableist slur –“tard” – and applying it liberally to feminist women would be a step backwards in the campaign for human rights, but apparently that’s old-fashioned twentieth century thinking on my part.

(Only if you like snuggly kitties, of course.)

I hate surprises. Like, a lot. For me all things must be planned. But hey, when one of your proudest achievements is a signage program, and the awards you’ve won for your mapping. You do tend to get angry at people who say government is worthless. Nothing ever happened like a Violence Against Women Act.

Snuggly kitties are the best. My icon is my dear beloved Clark, currently living the high life with my cousin out at my grandparents’ farm, I miss him like crazy.

Aw man, AJ, I’m sorry to hear that you got hurt.

A quick google suggests that brief periods of sleep are probably okay, but the first result is instructions on how to treat someone you suspect of having a concussion, and if they’re awake, you’re allowed to let them sleep, but wake them up every 15 minutes for the first two hours and administer a verbal test to see if they’re alert. After two hours, it switches to every half hour, and at some point to every hour.

Do you have someone to watch out for you?

Snuggly grizzly bears not so much.

I wish I could stay longer, but I’m falling asleep at my keyboard.

Have a good one.

AJ, I hope you see this before you go to sleep, but PLEASE don’t sleep if you’re relying on an alarm to wake you! You can sleep for two hours at a time with a mild concussion, but it’s really important that there is someone there to wake you and to call 911 if they can’t.

Head injuries can be cumulative so even if you’ve had concussions with no problem before, this one could be far worse. I want to urge you to go to a doctor. I understand you’ve had bad experiences but even seemingly mild head injuries can very easily and very quickly become fatal.

Nope, the only other name I’ve tried to use here was [offensive name redacted –DF] but those posts never made it past moderation.

I predict that this will be your next Return of Kings discussion: “Real Men Don’t Wait For A Yes”

Still too scared of being hit again to sleep, and it’s now been twelve hours since it happened.

Hi, AJ. Not sure if we’ve crossed comments on other threads before, but I just wanted to check in and say that you should really try not to sleep if you can manage it, at least until there is someone to watch over you. You mentioned that this was not the first time you’d taken a blow to the head and each successive one makes the danger more prominent (brother played football, and I sat up with him a few times).

I am not a doctor and I don’t play one on the internet, but here’s a thing: go into your bathroom, turn on as much light as you can, and look at your eyes in the mirror. Get really close to the mirror so that you can, essentially, stare yourself in they eye. Are your pupils the same size? Close your eyes for at least a full minute (do you feel dizzy or nauseous while you have them closed? Open them up – both pupils should shrink to a much smaller circle at about the same rate, and to the same size, did they?.

If you answered: no, yes, or no to the above, get thee to an emergency room stat. If it’s yes, no, yes, your chances are better, but you really should be very cautious over the next 48 hours. Is there anyone you could be around who could watch out for you?

Slept a little bit, no more than an hour in a row. The only person who can look after me is the one who did this in the first place, and I’d rather keep him locked out of my half of the house.

AJ — looks like our interests don’t overlap much, but I’ll be around for awhile, probably on and off, but hi!

Also, of course Moffat totally cops out with BS instead of, like, the silence was wiping their memories, or something. Big friendly button timey whimey cop outs are so much better (and fuck, the TARDIS is a deus ex machina — she’s quite literally a god from a machine)

AJ, I hope you’re feeling better, but be really careful for the next 24 hours. Head injuries can have a way of sneaking up on you. The last and worst one that I had… I was fine at first. Finished hockey practice, the coach checked me out and sent me home. On the way there, I couldnt remember how to get there…

The phone number for the domestic violence hotline is 1-800-799-SAFE, if you ever need any help in keeping yourself safe.

@AJ
I am so sorry about your injury. You say you do not have any one there you will trust to wake you. Do you have access to a phone? You could ask someone you know, or even someone on here to call you over and over again until you wake up.

A cell phone may stop ringing through if it gets too many unanswered calls in a row. It may be a setting you can alter, though. But a land line should keep ringing, for a while. Some answering machines will allow fewer and fewer rings through for each message recorded. I do not know what voicemail will do. If you do have someone call you, they need to know your address, so they can call emergency services if you do not answer after a certain amount of time or number of calls in a row.

A radio alarm clock tends to continue the alarm sound for quite a while. I had one that would go for an hour before it turned itself off. The one on my computer will go for hours. I use one called Free Alarm Clock. If you search CNET (certified virus and malware free) for those terms, it will be the second on the list, called exactly “Free Alarm Clock). I’d post the link, but I don’t want this to end up in moderation.

I just got up and went to the bank. Huge apology from my brother who did this, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still bleeding. Good times. Just checking in.

Your brother sounds dangerous. Is there any way you can avoid being alone with him any more?

AJ, good to see that you are okay!

Do your parents know about this (I’m assuming you live together because you live with them)? Your brother has some issues he needs to deal with, and having you on concussion watch is not the proper way to do that.

Please, please get someone to help you deal with him. Even if he’s sorry now, even if he ‘didn’t mean to,’ he needs to find better ways to deal with his impulse control.

Keep safe!
