Don’t worry, it’s not a video BY an MRA. It’s a video ABOUT MRAs. A little cartoon, to be specific, by Scott Benson, who has this to say about it on his Vimeo page:
A quick editorial cartoon about the intersection of self-pity, entitlement, rape, territoriality, misogyny and fear of women. You see it all over the place online in the form of Men’s Rights Activists (of whom there are a few reasonable non-misogynists), Men Going Their Own Way, Pick Up Artists, and dudes touting the “Red Pill”, because The Matrix is a good movie. Look any of these up if you have the stomach for it. These are extreme examples, but watered-down forms of these ideas are everywhere.
In lurking their blogs and youtube channels for a while, I’ve noticed that beyond the standard patriarchal chauvinism there is this deep fear of women – what they will do to me, how they will reject me, how they will use me, how they are changing society in a way that does not favor me, how they are making men into something I don’t like, how they are making themselves into something I don’t like, that they won’t give me what I want, and that they won’t give me what I think is rightfully mine. This goes beyond fear of feminism- this is fear of women at its purest. And that, to quote a puppet, leads to anger and hate. It’s sad.
Naturally, Benson had to close the comments to the video because of, you know, too much MRA.
He wrote more about it all on his Tumblr.
I was alerted to the video by various people, including Cloudiah, which reminds me to remind you all to go look at Cloudiah’s excellent Artistry for Feminism And Kittens blog.
@hellkell
I assumed slut walk was more popular, so I searched slut walk greece. Didn’t get anything obvious, but unfortunately I read the comments of something…
Yuck. Same apologists shit another day.
Also, treat sex workers with respect… (not at you, at commenter)
There is a slut walk france from the looks of things, though, so that one might be international.
I do not see Jezebel being that popular, though…
” better ”
” awful ideas ”
Ah, but it’s all relative, isn’t it? Things are almost never pure black or white but an entire spectrum of never-ending shades of grey (btw I really HATE that series).
Slutwalks are international, yes. They started in Canada. I think we’ve had them here, too. If the coverage here was anything to go by, they’d be pretty widely known.
I wonder why it is men think they’ve a right to decide what counts as “dressing like a hooker” and treating a woman badly because she doesn’t dress as “modestly” as they think she should? I guess the same thing as makes the same men likely to abuse women who don’t dress attractively enough for their liking. Basic old misogyny, basic old “I own women” thinking.
HEY LENSY
I’m wearing a form-fitting dress! It shows some cleavage! Does that make me “dressed like a hooker” in your alleged mind? Do you think it gives you the right to insult or assault me? But hey, I’m wearing it ‘cos I couldn’t decide what to wear today, and asked my husband if he had any ideas! And he said “Wear the new dress!” So is it all right if I’m wearing it with male approval?
Lensy’s showing his true gobshitery*, for all the I’m-so-sorry-woe-is-me stuff earlier.
*it is too a word
Today I am wearing a tshirt that shows most of my arms and a lot of cleavage. This is not because I’m a sex worker, it’s because it’s about 85 degrees.
It’s 85 degrees in the Bay area? I’m about to put the heat on in TX. It’s 52.
Now that’s weird. It’s been hot here for the past few days.
This is a Jen Kirkman quote I really liked about sexist humor on twitter: “God, this is like a weird playground, where some people are having a good time and some people are getting kind of attacked in the corner, and I want them to know about it.”
I don’t think that DUI jokes are a thing (I’ve never heard of them), but if they are, I’m OK with not being able to resort to them in case it triggers someone. Just like I’m totes fine with not telling any dead baby jokes in case someone in the vicinity had a child who died. I mean, who the fuck is so unfunny that their humor relies on having to make someone who is suffering feel shitty?
It was 87 and muggy yesterday. BUT!!! This is the first year I’ve been here where we hit May and no 100 degree days! I’m not complaining about the cold, I like not sweating from unusual places.
I did see someone under the dryer getting their hair dyed today and feel a bit sorry for them, since air conditioning isn’t really a thing here.
You’d all hear me cry if my central AC went toes up. Speaking of which–seranna, if you’re around, I hope yours got fixed.
We’ve been having the loveliest autumn days with a few wintry ones thrown in. Bit of a spoiler today with a blasting north wind – not that it’s cold, just full of grit. Blech. Makes me wish I didn’t have to stay off this leg as much as possible; it’s my favourite time of year and I’d love to be doing long walks on the weekends.
Abnoy: I know lots of Philipinos. Most are swell people (as with any group, some are shits, e.g. Abnoy).
The doubt about your status is my fault. It’s not that you are too refined a speaker, it’s that I mistook you for someone else; because both of you share the same pathology of liking little girls.
On the other hand: Tch, every person is a product of time and place and I make no apologies for how the milieu in which I was born and raised. In fact, where and when I’m from, I’m considered positively progressive
Way to go. I don’t believe it for a minute (see the aforementioned Philpinos I know. Many of them are primary immigrants. They would disgree with your assessment of your normative (much less, progressive) nature.
Pecunium: it’s Filipino. /pedantry
I know lots of people from the Philippines too. Even the one who’s only 18 doesn’t want to have sex with 12 year olds.
In other words, stop blaming your country of origin for your personal failings, Abnoy.
Yeah, this is typically when California – even Northern California – gets scorching hot. I was sweating profusely today just after walking outside for ~15 minutes.
Last summer was oddly cool. I’m guessing that this one may more than make up for it.
I really hope not. As someone who’s lived most of her life in Colorado, I have very little tolerance for summer heat. Especially the heat in Colorado – yuck. X_X
Just to clarify, Colorado is known for having very cold winters and very hot summers. In case that sounded weird. =P
People at work are complaining about the cold, I think they’ve lost the plot. I can always get warmer, but when it’s 112 outside, I can’t think straight. That will be here soon enough.
I’d be complaining too if it was in the 50s in Austin! We should switch climates.
There definitely needs to be a way to send temperatures/climates via the internet. Think of the northern-southern hemisphere trade it could create.
Where are you in the Bay Area, hellkell? I live in San Jose, where summer is highly unpleasant because of all the heat. I can’t wait until I can live in Santa Cruz. The weather there is fabulous in the summer.
I’m in Texas.
Oh. Oops. =S My reading comprehension is awful today.
We had a really cold April. It snowed. A lot. I saw some geese come North in late March during our 5-6 days of decent weather and I felt so bad for them. I hope they made it through okay.
Today was pretty nice though! It’s 8:30 and it’s still 18C (64F). And it hasn’t snowed in 4 whole days XD.
