Funny Men’s Rights Video Time!

Don’t worry, it’s not a video BY an MRA. It’s a video ABOUT MRAs. A little cartoon, to be specific, by Scott Benson, who has this to say about it on his Vimeo page:

A quick editorial cartoon about the intersection of self-pity, entitlement, rape, territoriality, misogyny and fear of women. You see it all over the place online in the form of Men’s Rights Activists (of whom there are a few reasonable non-misogynists), Men Going Their Own Way, Pick Up Artists, and dudes touting the “Red Pill”, because The Matrix is a good movie. Look any of these up if you have the stomach for it. These are extreme examples, but watered-down forms of these ideas are everywhere.

In lurking their blogs and youtube channels for a while, I’ve noticed that beyond the standard patriarchal chauvinism there is this deep fear of women – what they will do to me, how they will reject me, how they will use me, how they are changing society in a way that does not favor me, how they are making men into something I don’t like, how they are making themselves into something I don’t like, that they won’t give me what I want, and that they won’t give me what I think is rightfully mine. This goes beyond fear of feminism- this is fear of women at its purest. And that, to quote a puppet, leads to anger and hate. It’s sad.

Naturally, Benson had to close the comments to the video because of, you know, too much MRA.

He wrote more about it all on his Tumblr.

I was alerted to the video by various people, including Cloudiah, which reminds me to remind you all to go look at Cloudiah’s excellent Artistry for Feminism And Kittens blog.

“You mean that time a few months back (I think) when we both slunk off to the Weird Person’s Corner of Shame?”

That’d be the time, yes.

You misunderstand me! I am not anti-boerboel! I just don’t support legislation that says they should be euthanized for barking too loud at night!

Okay. Apparently I was being too subtle. Stop trying to make this blog about your pet issue. Stop telling us we support draconian laws because we don’t feel like discussing your pet issue. Stop moving the goddamn Your insistence on doing these things is why I don’t think you.

@viscaria

You know it’s funny, but that clever comeback you made actually made me realize what was wrong with my posts here more efficiently than your previous comments Your point is very well made… Sorry for derailing the thread.

@Argenti

It’s kind of difficult to synch my gravatars from the phone. Will try though…

@Bee

I understand what you are saying. Truth is, I had a bit of a big “MRM faith crisis” recently due to recent developments (yes, it was Pattek) and I really wanted to see what the other side is like, because, well, getting information about feminism from the MRM is sort of like getting info about immigrants from the “Golden Dawn” party.

To my surprise, you people weren’t bad. I was actually expecting for an “angry misandrist” to come and chew me out (and sometimes during my time here, I was actively hoping for it) but what I got instead was logical arguments, some very clever individuals and relative patience with some of my misconceptions. OK, last few posts were a disaster but this was due to misunderstandings and not due to actual malice or misandry.

You’re correct though. I am getting to be a bit too bothersome for the people here, I am derailing threads, and it’s time for me to leave this place for good.

I am in a bit of a personal mental journey right now and I don’t know where it will take me. It might lead me to fully embrace feminism or… Not…

At the very least, you have convinced me to further educate myself.

Goodbye, everyone.

Viscaria, we love you even when you are on antihistamines. Been there, done that!

On the contrary, you should be that mean more often! Because it was funny, in spite of the typing fail.

(Also, “I don’t think you” is a very apt typo, since the thing that seems to upset dudes like lensy in particular the most is women just not thinking much about them.)

There’s also the question of why it should be on the victim of harassment to turn it aside with repartee or whatever. Is it really so difficult to think the harassment shouldn’t happen in the first place, and that the people doing it are the ones who need to be taught to change their behaviour?

Obviously everyone likes a case where someone says something clever and turns an unfavorable situation around to their advantage, but seriously! As soon as you go “why can’t more women just do that?”, you’re creating an expectation that anyone who doesn’t has failed (and with that comes the inevitable implication that those other women deserve, or at any rate ought to expect, the harassment). And the woman has to come up with something clever and witty in response to a guy who just yelled “hey babe!” or something like that.

It’s like saying “Why can’t more people who fall off roofs land effortlessly on their feet?”

That’s because angry misandrists don’t exist and clever individuals do.

Also did you notice that he trotted out the idea that we can’t have codes for non-harassment at sci-fi conventions because they’re just too damn sexual? This one is the Greatest Hits of Dumb Internet Sexism.

Lensman — advice? Lurk more, post less. I’d a bit like that whole “you have two ears and one mouth” thing.

Criminy lensman. You want to teach women how to deal with harassment wit witty comebacks that only work if there is a large construction fence between the victim and the perp? You can post it on some of those effing how not to get raped pages that are so effing popular with no woman ever!

lensman:

Sorry, couldn’t read while posting.

Points taken

…Still… It’s a cool idea for a website…

Still with the, “You are right, but see how much I am also right….”

Stop. If you are really taking the points, then just say that.

If you don’t, trying to pretty it up with a sop of agreeable prose isn’t going to change that you are still promoting a crappy idea.

It’s not up to women to shame men into being decent by having snappy comebacks. Because it’s not about being seen as funny, it’s about not being seen as things for men to treat like objects of amusement.
