Today, another lesson in how to get yourself hundreds of upvotes on Reddit.
It’s really quite simple.
1) Go to the Ask Reddit subreddit. Find the post asking Redditors if they’ve ever “tried a crazy urban-dictionary sex move? (e.g. Alaskan Pipeline, Komodo Dragon, Donkey Punch, etc.) How did it turn out?”
2) Post a story about a hilarious little prank you (allegedly) pulled on a sex partner that instantly transformed consensual sex into violent rape.
3) Oh, and throw in a gratuitous racial slur while you’re at it.
4) Then whine about how your partner’s negative response to your (alleged) little rape prank gave you “blue balls” and complain that you might have to pay her damages for “emotional distress” in civil court (allegedly).
You might think that this might be a bit much even for the morally undeveloped manchildren (and occasional womanchildren) who populate Reddit. But guess what? The poster of the tale in question got literally hundreds more upvotes than downvotes for his whiny “confession.”
Here’s the screenshot to prove it. (I’ve partically obscured the racial slur; click on image to see full-sized version.)
There were, of course, those who reacted like normal human beings to Mr. Dick Pic’s story. (I’ve obscured the homophobic slur that made up the entirely of his reply.)
Mr. Dick Pic was so offended that anyone was offended by his shitty (alleged) behavior that he rage-quit the thread, deleting his comment and — living up to his name — leaving only a dick pic in its place.
Now, Mr. Dick Pic may just be trolling, and I really hope that’s all there is to his terrible story, but his ridiculously pissy behavior after he got called out makes me think that his story, or at least parts of it, may actually be true.
Just another day on Reddit, the internet’s largest and most influential asshat aggregator.
Thanks to an anonymous Reddit informant for the heads-up, and the screenshots.
Exactly. Race, disability, sexual orientation and ethnicity are inherent traits. One might argue with religion and say being of a certain religion is a matter of performing certain actions, but when people are targeted for belonging to a religion it’s usually not about what they, personally, have DONE.
Saying awful things = not an inherent trait, but actions one performs.
Dvarg, you wizard you. You beat me to it. 🙁
…and so did a bunch of other people. 😉
OK, that is just embarrassing, dude. Even accepting that white men *can* be oppressed in our current political climate (bear with me here), a group that highlights the horrible things that men and women say on public forums is not actually vilifying anyone for innate traits. Unless you think being an arsehole on the internet is an innate trait?
If MRAs (including, sadly, women and not-white people) happen to be the people who say the most vile shit the most often, that’s not anyone else’s fault.
I have a little trouble with that definition because religion (or lack thereof in the case of atheist) isn’t exactly an inherent trait.
The problem is not that anyone’s saying white men can’t be oppressed (just for clarification, I don’t think that anyone is saying this, I think pemra thinks we’re saying it). It’s that they aren’t oppressed on the basis of being white or the basis of being men. You can be poor and no one’s gonna say “well, you’re a white man so don’t whine” unless you say “I’m poor because all these PoCs and women are taking my job!” Same for any other axis of oppression a white man could face. As long as you don’t try to put it on your whiteness or your maleness, I think most people would not mind.
Oh no, I have been ninjad so bad.
Re: religion, that is harder to define. But really what we’re trying to differentiate is between who you are and what you do – being Christian is fine, being a militant Christian that supports terrorism is not so fine.
Gender and sexuality can be malleable, and so can religion. It’s still an intrinsic part of the person you are. I hope I’m not being erasing here, does this make sense to anyone?
I think the problem is that often anti-religious attitudes are expressed in terms of ethnic groups. See anti semitism, anti muslim attitudes now. Most of them were tied into racism, too.
Oh and definitely this:
And sure, individual men can be discriminated against for being men, or white people for being white, even. But there sure as shit is no systemic oppression.
@Hrovintr
Makes sense to me. And sometimes religion is really important to people’s cultures/ backgrounds, even if they don’t agree with the religion’s policies. Example: I really like Greek Orthodox churches because that’s where I grew up and spent lots of times around my relatives and it ties into “greekness” for me, but I can’t stand half the preachers because they’re so sexist or homophobic.
Fuck off Pemra, and stop trying to take over threads with your boring lies.
You think stories about rape are funny, or edgy. You’re defending the whole idea that rape is something to laugh about. That says a great deal about you.
There’s two things. 1, the sociological ‘how can it be racism if they have no power to make your life worse,’ and 2. most definitions about hate groups agree it’s more than saying ‘this is bad behavior’ and stuff like calls to violence or stuff that will have real impact. Real animosity. Not just ‘this is terrible stuff you just wrote and you should feel bad.’
And the thing is, he continues to talk about ‘reasonable MRAs’ even after being shown that AVFM is still hosting a call to terrorism on their activism page.
So tell me again who the hate group is?
Howard, duh, the hate group is US!
@Chie
Thanks for this. When I initially read the post I was having a hard time seeing where the “possible rapist” was coming from, and I knew I must have been missing something obvious because everyone else got it. It didn’t even occur to me to connect “the Rodeo” with “clutch her hips as tight as you can”.
That should be ‘and is INSTEAD made up of stuff like calls to violence.’
Last time we did this somebody posted a great list of the terrible things SRS has done and said that proves they hate white dudes. Most of it was hilarious. Some of it was a little touching. I felt decidedly pro-SRS after seeing it.
Ah, yes. The racism of much anti-religious sentiment is such a pain because of the (pathetic) plausible deniability.
And culture is super interesting to me. Like Catholic people who draw comfort from all the ritual. As someone raised agnostic, I find all of it bemusing or sometimes creepy (went to a couple of Catholic funerals – they remind me of zombies, no one gives you the words, they all just mutter along from memory). 😛
It’s an interesting point actually because I sometimes wonder that I like seeing all the women of various races around university wearing headscarves – though the one woman wearing an actual burka weirded me out a bit, she was still talking animatedly to her (male) friend. And I think it’s because in the face of western attack, immigrants feeling comfortable wearing something that’s important to them while still being outspoken people in a place of learning makes me happy.
I’m telling my sister (marie) what’s going on because i’m in too much pain to do school and her computer’s not working so we’re just manboobzing together.
Channels Marie (she says hi):
Marie: Technically, mercury is a liquid but you still wouldn’t want to drink it.
…
That wouldn’t make any sense, though.
Okay, back to me (Fade) now.
I actually have nothing to say.
Hahaha. I dunno, I like it, Marie/Fade. 😀
Obviously, we are assimilating into each other like all women do, so that we can join the hivemind one day and find
peacemisandry.I think xenophobia is probably a speck more accurate than racism, although both play a part; for instance, there used to be a lot of anti-Catholic sentiment when most Catholics were immigrants, even though a lot of them were white, and it was of the “they’re going to come and change our way of life and their allegiance is to the Vatican not to America” sort.
Huh. That makes sense, katz. I couldn’t really tell you what the main Christian denomination was in settlers here, though I’m sure there was one.
They certainly did a good job of converting Maori though, which sucks IMO. We get taught Maori myths but no one believes in it any more. It’s part of the reason I haven’t gone back to get in touch with my Iwi (tribe) – it’s very Christian, and very traditional. Iwi vary a lot, and mine is one of the more sexist ones. Women at the back and all that. :/
PEMRA is just saying the same two things over and over–SRS is a hate group, and society treats white men like monsters. I would say let’s make a drinking game of those two things, but I don’t want anyone getting sick from too much alcohol.
Also, I wasn’t aware feminism was about hating white men, because I like my dad, my brother, my husband, my sons, my uncles, most of my cousins, my kid’s bus driver, and even the new neighbor that never wears a shirt and throws beer cans all over his yard. (It’s cool, though. I’ll overlook that as long as he doesn’t care about all the toys strewn about in my yard all the time.)
PEMRA, pointing out privilege to someone does not equal hating someone. I myself have white privilege, cis privilege, hetero privilege, and thin privilege. Those traits are just how I am, unless I were to gain weight in the future. I could gain class privilege if I were to win the lottery. The key is to acknowledge your privilege and be cautious about not abusing it.
@hrovitnir, for awhile I lived in an area with a large Muslim immigrant community, and talking to the women I knew about why they chose to wear hijab was fascinating. I was surprised at how many either weren’t religious or hadn’t worn it in their home countries, but chose to wear it in the US as a way to hang onto their culture and heritage. It really hammered home to me how much religion is tied to culture, and the complexity of why people identify the way they do.
This is another terrible week for cloudiah’s friends. 2013 sucks. Fuck cancer. Just, seriously, fuck cancer.
This may be influencing my thinking when I say, Can PEMRA just be banned? He’s demonstrating B—–n-like levels of self-absorption and tediousness.
New theory: PEMRA is a member of a Cargo Cult. He’s heard these words–“hate group”, “oppression” and so forth, and sees that they produce a particular effect (those so labeled get derided). So he’s decided that the words are magic incantations, and repeats them, in a different context, hoping to achieve the same result. Of course this fails, so he ends up looking around, confused, as to why the magic won’t work for him.
