So here’s an interesting story: The creator of the popular I Fucking Love Science Facebook page recently got a Twitter account.
Oh, I know that doesn’t sound all that interesting, but here’s the thing: When she got the Twitter account, she revealed to her Facebook fans that she was, in fact, a she.
This apparently shocked and confused a large portion of her readership. A … Woman? But … but … SCIENCE?! But there she was, with a woman’s name — Elise Andrew — and a woman’s face and everything.
Over on Hello Giggles, Julia Gazdag — also rumored to be a woman — reports on the reaction to Elise Andrew’s Big Reveal. Some chick at Reuters also did a piece on it.
(Thanks, Elizabeth, for pointing me to this story.)
I did like one of the comments on the first story–essentially, a guy going, “Yeah, I was surprised the site was run by a cute, young girl. And thanks for pointing out to me just how much stupid is involved in that reaction!” Just when I’m about to call it quits on humanity, I get some shred of evidence that we’re getting better, and cheer up again.
OH MY GOD!!! Science and women? But, but… our ladybrains will explode, or something.
Women are in science? Shut the fuck up!
Whenever David (or anyone else) begins a post with “BREAKING:”, it makes me think of Steele.
It reminded me of the shock and horror experienced some years ago when it was revealed that Digby was a woman and a blogger, both at the same time. Something thought previously by d00dz to have been impossible.
Also in the “women and STEM” folder: MRAs fearlessly trash a 9 year old girl for wanting to learn to make games. Another great chapter of MRA as a social justice movement… http://freethoughtblogs.com/amilliongods/2013/03/27/hags-of-laga-voice-for-me-not-a-second-sarkeesian/
Womenz in science? But our brains will shrink and then our uteri will move into our heads and start controlling our every action and then we’ll be even more helplessly irrational than we were already! (Sports have the opposite effect, of one’s uterus falling right out and then we become hysterical for, I dunno, other reasons.)
We should really be furious that I Fucking Love Science is the worst science-related group in existence.

@bagelsan
Oh joy >:( Why must America suck so much.
grrr….grumble grumble.
My favorite part is that you have about 2 weeks total to think any abortion over, schedule it, and have the procedure finished. That’s totally fair to women and not at all a hardship. -_-
More and more I swear when I start work it should be for Planned Parenthood.
@Bagelsan
Yeah, 2 weeks on the long side, since not everyone is going to notice when they’re late :/ The rants I could make about america. When the hell will things finally start progressing on this?
gah. I probably shouldn’t derail the whole thread.
I think you’d get the same reaction if she was posting about anything not stereotypically female that was popular. Do you think it’s possible to not have a ‘default’ human? As an individual or a society.
OT ‘cuz gotta vent. My comment: “It is a form of birth control. Most of us would agree that it’s a last resort only. And stop putting all the responsibility on women. Men can use condoms just as easily. Imagine the US where most if not all of the women say “no” to all relations. Men wouldn’t survive.”
The reply: I’ll stop putting all the responsibility on women the day the first man gives birth.
Can somebody explain? Are people in the US really this stupid?
Oh, here’s another one: Responsible woman make sure they do use condoms.
WTF. What is wrong with these people…
@Maude LL, Both the 9-year-old’s mother AND THE 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL HERSELF have received death threats.
I know really shouldn’t be shocked anymore…
Not sure if troll… but not a great opening.
But…men can give birth. Even if we’re only talking about cis people here, it takes two to tango.
@tina
Are you from the US? cuz, if not, I apologize on behalf of my amazingly shitty country. (some good things, I suppose, but fuck, the bad one are really showing right now)
fu…I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.
Un Fucking Believable.
I can’t link to the article ‘cos the internet at work is slower than good ol’ dial-up at the moment … then again, I’m not sure I want to link to it.
So, what are the MRAs saying about this? Are they bringing up certain things said on that page about science that are blatantly wrong (like one time that made me cringe when it talked about dwarf planets and said “depending on how you look at it, there could be more than 8 planets”) or are they just making unsourced statements about misandry?
@Marie: Is that also one of those people who says about how feminists are trying to take away all responsibility from women while at the same time, acting like men have no responsibility over sex?
@cthulhu’s intern
I’d assume so, but not sure. I was quoting Tina quoting someone… 😛
… not sure what it says about me that I always assumed I F-ing Love Science was run by a company.
OMG! A GIRL???? HOW CAN IT BE????
There are no girls on the internet!
(Only cats. >.>)
I’m a woman, and I’m doing science right now, as we speak. How many minds am I blowing?
B-bu-but what about the GIRL CATS?
