And so the Internet has found a new woman to hate. Most of you are probably already familiar with the Adria Richards debacle thatβs developed over the past several days. If not, Jill at Feministe has a good summary of events:
Adria Richards, formerly of the company SendGrid, was at a tech conference this week when some dudes behind her made a series of inappropriate and sexual jokes. Annoyed by the pervasiveness of misogyny in the tech world, she snapped a photo of them and put in on Twitter with a complaint. One of the conference organizers spoke to the men and they apologized. Totally reasonable! Good response, PyCon. Later, one of the dudes got fired. Instead of getting mad at the company that made the choice to fire him, the internet hordes descended on Adria. She was on the receiving end of rape and death threats. Her address and phone number were published. Her blog and her companyβs website came under DDoS attack. Oh and then her company, SendGrid, fired her.
Like Jill, I think firing someone for a βdongleβ joke is an overreaction, to say the least. But Richards wasn’t responsible for that; indeed, she told the fired man she hoped his employer would reconsider and take him back.
SendGridβs firing of Richards is far more problematic. Itβs one thing to get in trouble for acting like a sexist boor; itβs quite another to get in trouble for simply pointing out someone elseβs problematic behavior. Richards faced a virtual lynch mob for simply documenting an example of the everyday sexism that permeates the tech world; by firing her, SendGrid essentially sided with the mob.
Is βlynch mobβ an unfair term to describe those whoβve gone after Richards? No. In this context, the term is sadly apropos, as the target of all this online βactivismβ is not only female but black β two strikes against her in the minds of many of her, er, βcritics,β who attacked her as a βfucking niggerβ as well as a βcunt.β (The more genteel racists referred to her derisively as a βdiversity hire.β)
Numerous commenters have already documented some of the appallingly racist and misogynist attacks on Richards. (The links in the above paragraph contain plenty of examples.)
Here, Iβd like to focus specifically on the attacks on Richards coming from Menβs Rights activists β that is, from people who like to think of themselves as upstanding human rights activists for the 21st century, virtual equivalents of Martin Luther King. In fact, many of the reactions of MRAs show them to have far more in common with the bigots who fought against the civil rights movement than they do with King.
In the Menβs Rights subreddit, the MRA masses gave more than one hundred upvotes to a graphic describing Richards as a βracist, sexist and hypocritical cunt.β Evidently pointing out that white men as a class have certain advantages in the world is a kind of βracism.β
Elsewhere in the subreddit, aasorted commenters indulged themselves in gendered slurs. Greyfeld got dozens up upvotes for comments denouncing Richards as a βfeminist cuntβ and a βscreeching harpy cunt.β DerpaNerb described Richards as βa racist/sexist cunt [whoβs] clearly β¦ not capable of doing her job properly.β Buster2209 scored 160 upvotes with a comment describing Richards as a βstupid bitch [who] brought it on herself.β Cyridius simply declared βI hate her because she’s a dumb ignorant bitch.β
Others happily gave the Menβs Rights movement credit for Richardsβ firing. The execrable EvilPundit got 180 upvotes for a post essentially endorsing the virtual lynch mob and declaring Richardsβ firing to be proof that the Menβs Rights movement had entered a βnew phase.β
Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr. Pundit, but thereβs nothing new about men harassing and threatening a black woman.
AnnArchist β a former contributor to Redditβs now-banned Beating Women subreddit — Β reacted with indignation to someone who pointed out Richards had been harassed:
Over on A Voice for Men, where the locals describe themselves with no sense of irony as Menβs Human Rights Activists, there was much rejoicing over the firing of Richards, who was variously described as an βentitled bitch,β a βsociopathic bitch,β a βfemshitβ and a βbush pig.” Naturally, the c-word, applied to all feminists, made an appearance as well.
Daflory hoped that Richardsβ firing would be the start of an industry-wide purge:
Adria Richards seems like an entitled narcissist, who had become used to deference as a moral authority through her impeccable credentials as a diversity goddess: black, Jewish, and female. β¦
No one ever told Adria Richards that she was at best only an tolerated guest in the world of tech, and she could either play by male rules and contribute, or get lost. Hopefully other feminists in tech will get a similar message.
And August LΓΈvenskioldsβ mind went straight to the gutter:
[A]fter being outed as a betrayer of her customers, none of them will want to work with her, and any tech company that hires her will instantly lose credibility.
Sheβs going to be hard-pressed to find a job as a sex-worker unless the light is quite dim.
Taking a step back from the particulars of the incident, Mark Trueblood wondered if a man strike might help to put things right once again:
Iβm pretty sure Amnesty International doesn’t exactly endorse this sort of “human rights” activism.
Jessay – I just this minute gave my leg a big rub-down with the hemp oil (and the basin a big rub-down with grease remover after splashing it all over …) and then came here and read your reply! π So we’ll see how it goes. My leg’s quite sore after doing the shopping, so it’s a good test for it.
Argenti – “Actually, my freshman roommates said exactly that, I βjust need to be closer to godβ yeah⦔ – EWWWWWW from a dualistsortofdeist on that one. π
Coconut oil’s good for inflammation, I take some for my hip.
It’d smell good too, yes? My hairdresser uses something (shampoo, conditioner, no idea) that smells of coconut and it’s divine.
Kitteh’s it does smell good.
Argenti, your freshman roommates had no idea what they were talking about. Everyone knows that crazy people are closer to God.
Fuck off, scrapingthebottomofthebarrel. You aren’t funny and aren’t welcome.
Coconut is one of my favorite smells. Have you ever had a fresh coconut, the baby kind where you can just make a hole in it and drink the juice? It’s awesome.
No, I haven’t!
::strains to remember if they sell coconuts in our supermarket::
How about atheist crazies? Or pagan crazies? Or people who’d prefer not to be called crazy by you?
For drinking you want the white kind that don’t have the fibrous brown husk on the outside. You can literally just make a hole and stick a straw in it.
Hmm, I don’t think they sell those around here. Leastwise, I think I’d remember if I’d seen a non-brown coconut. Oh the joys of a semi-food-desert!
They look like this.

Not at all like the older version!
Aiiieeee mutant coconuts!
π
I’ve yet to encounter anything coconut-based that I don’t like, which is part of why Thailand is a dessert paradise for me.
Mmmm, it would be! π
Also – coconut soap, coconut lotion, coconut shampoo, coconut rice…

have you tried acupuncture? I have some damage to the muscles on the left side of my body that I thought was permanent. It’s surprisingly fast and effective, and I’m not sure where you live, but in my city and others I have lived in previously there is community acupuncture that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Overall pretty thrilled with the results.
@Melody: Ah, thank you. Yes, 23 definitely is adult, I just didn’t know how old she was. Thanks again π
@Argenti: Technically-speaking, there are some pagan religions/traditions/cults (the good kind, I mean) which view mental illness, as well as artificially-altered states of consciousness, as either a form of worship or a symptom of being close to the Divine. Granted, that’s almost certainly not what Scrapemind was referring to, but I felt it was worth mentioning ^^
lolbeast – no, I haven’t. My osteo used needles on my leg once, but I didn’t notice any improvement, and the darned things left bruises. I’m getting an MRI done in a couple of weeks, just in case this very unresponsive knee has some structural damage.
I think all the acupuncturists here in Oz would be private, and I’d be very surprised if Medicare or my private fund covered them.
Oh, much I know – my insurer does cover (or more likely partly cover) acupuncture. Whaddya know. π
Sid, I was referring to that sort of thing, as well as Christian mystics like Hildegard of Bingen.
@Cassandra
That’s the one thing I miss about Sri Lanka. The canned coconut water we get out here usually comes from some premium fruit, but there’s something about drinking it straight out of the coconut.
@kitteh’s
You’re unlikely to get it at the regular supermarket, but you might find it in some Sri Lankan stores or East Asian stores.
I miss the fruit in Thailand in general, especially pomelo and tiny bananas, neither of which are ever as good here.

best of luck with your knee! sending long distance hugs. acupuncture can cause bruising or even very mild bleeding, but it isn’t anything to worry about. it does take repeated sessions to have a lasting effect, but a time goes on the seasons can be further and further apart. π
wow autocorrect, sessions not seasons
