I gave up reading the thread at this point as it seemed to have degenerated into little more than a collection of “jailbait” pictures.
@Freemage, the petition isn’t actually something I’ve asked for. All they technically want at this stage to appeal is a letter arguing against the reasons they’ve given.
This petition is basically to make it stand out, make them sit up a bit, and make it clear that we’re not going to just go away and leave them alone.
It’s pretty much to say “We are organised, we are passionate, we have support, we have imagination and innovation and we are not going away or giving up without making your life more difficult than it needs to be first”.
If they don’t ratify us after the letter and petition, I’ll run another petition, a much bigger one and aim for way more signatures, I’ll also start a social media campaign and run a campaign via our campus media. I’ve already got interest from the editor of the main newspaper and from several media outlets.
And our Union pays a lot of attention to the student media, so if I can get them onside and putting pressure on them they’ll probably cave at that point.
Oh and I’ll also have a letter writing campaign, getting people to write in to the Union in support and fill up their inboxes and desks.
There isn’t, as far as I’m aware, a set of steps that people usually go through to appeal, mainly because our Union isn’t used to being challenged.

You’re right, in a truly free society he would face no consequences for confessing he committed a crime. I’m with Cloudiah re: US government controlling Internet speech, but you’re deliberately muddying the issue by pretending the only thing he could be punished for is saying misogynistic things. I truly love you American liberals. An American liberal can never be completely bad because behind all the leftist crap, there’s always a little bit of American libertarianism that just wait to express himself and shout a call for liberty at the face of the world.
I’ve witnessed the cyber-war against reactionary blogs in France. That was both funny and terrific. These blogs were places where everyone was a troll : racist, misogynist, communist and libertarian insulting each other all the time. Since the blog owners were almost all right-wing anarchist dandies with a strong aversion for censorship, all kind of different trolls were keeping writing different kind of hateful commentaries and these blogs were regularly shut down : a blog was shut down because a troll wrote a negationist rant, it reappeared few days later somewhere else and was shut down again after a few weeks and reappeared again and was shut down again and on and on. That was globally inoffensive cat-and-mouse games but sometimes an anti-racist/sexist/homophobic association managed to bring someone in front of the judge and that was suddenly less funny.
People’s understood quickly that the best way to avoid these problems is to refuge themselves in the American side of Internet and where you can be protected by American Free-speech laws : use wordpress instead of a French blogging platform, WordPress will not shut down your blog each time a zealous activist report your blog and as long as you’re anonymous, you won’t face a judge because someone think what you’ve written is hateful.
Although, French officials have found the parade : force American websites to snitch. A few months ago, Jew associations asked Twitter to remove antisemitic jokes, Twitter responded “free-speech”, these associations filled a complain and now Twitter is forced by the French law to reveal the identity of French residents who’ve written a tweet which could be seen as hateful to the associations so they can put him on trial (Twitter is also forced to allow these associations to write kind of “trigger warnings” which will appear in top of the screen when you search a problematic hashtag, something saying “racism/antisemitism/sexism/homophobia is not an opinion it’s a crime” probably, they used to love to say that kind of things). It’s just a matter of time before these associations do the same thing for WordPress.

As regard to the sexual assaults this guy confessed to do, Foucault wrote interesting things about that in the first tome of his “history of sexuality”, he said that from an historical point of view, what really changed in the general attitude towards sexuality during the last three centuries isn’t that sexuality’s been less repressed but that we’ve transformed sex in a discourse, that every perversion, every sexual behavior have been classified, analyzed, pathologized by scientists, psychologists, judges.

We can use Foucault’s thesis to make an interesting comparison between the “hysterization of women’s bodies” by scientists and psychologists during the 19th and the actual pathologization of masculinity and men’s sexuality. The so-called source of evil changed but the system and the methods are the same.
