So Anita Sarkeesian, who apparently didn’t run off with all her Kickstarter money to found a Misandist Gynarchy in the wilds of Canada, hasย released the first video in her Tropes vs Women in Video Games project. (I’ve embedded it below.)
Naturally, this is causing great consternation in certain corners of the Internet (*cough* Reddit *cough cough* everywhere else that misogynistic nerds congregate *cough*). In the Man Boobz forum, Katz has started a contest to see who can find “the whiniest, brattiest, most entitled response” to Sarkeesian’s video on the Internet. So far Katz and Myoo have found a couple classic comments from irate Sarkeeianaphobes:
[H]ow does one go about stating that genders and gender roles are social constructs? I mean is evolution nothing to her? Does the patriarchy make male peacocks dress provocatively?
Yes. Yes it does.
And:
Iโm gradually losing respect for the opposite sex. Iโve unfollowed people on tumblr who talk about how great she is, because it actually causes bile to rise in to my throat.
Yeah, that’s a totally reasonable response to a woman making a video about video games.
So anyway, I’m thinking we should bring the contest over here.
See what you can find! Consider it a sort of scavenger hunt.
Here’s my contribution, from the Men’s Rights subreddit, complaining that Damsels in Distress are the truly privileged ones:
Amazingly, this acutally got called out on r/mr as being pretty damn stupid.
Also, I have another question, to add to the stack of other questions I’ve been asking lately: Just why do you think so many guys get so angry when girls and women invade what they consider a male sphere, like gaming? (Also, why do they consider gaming to belong to boys and men?)
Oh, and here’s the video that’s causing all this hubbub:
Actually one of the cool things about SAS is they have a lot of different widths available. Normally I have issues with any shoes that touch my bare feet, even Keds give me blisters, but the SAS have always been fine right out of the box.
@cloudiah
Those are awesome. They would look really nice with some crazy socks! ๐
Going back to something said on the last page (I think it was Marie?) about stompy boots with dresses, I just bought these and OH MY DAYS they are fabulous.
I have a shoe problem. I used to buy at least one pair of heels a week a few years ago. Now I’m kind of skint and the only time I really go out is to go to gigs so the best thing to do has been to go cold turkey. Now I only really wear those boots and my Doc Martens. I still have two shelves of other shoes, but I’ve probably only worn three pairs of them about once each in the past year and a half :/
I used to be able to do everything in heels, now I can only wear them for about half an hour.
@CassandraSays
I made a note to pass the recommendation on to my sister as well. (She has the wide feet.)
Speaking of Rocket Dog, did you know that they make heels in Thai silk? Not that I’d want to encourage your shoe problem or anything…
@thenatfantastic
those shoes are perfect! I need them! *wants* how much is 40 pounds in dollars?
(just asking, because I actually do need to replace my shoes…and I have an amazon gift card! please, life, work for me here).

when the facts come out to play
Poxy’s got not much to say.
My latest obsession has been opaque patterned tights. Pretty, fun, many of them work-appropriate, and they’re warm enough to take me through the Calgarian winter. Soon I can start wearing sheer patterned tights!
I suspect they’ll be one of those trends that everybody else moves on from next year, and I’ll cling to, because they delight me so.

“This is a country with courage,” said Gail Dines, a professor of sociology and women’s studies at Wheelock College in Boston and author of the book Pornland.

could lay the groundwork for laws banning pornography across all media — including the Internet — and could potentially restrict civil liberties, free speech advocates claim.
The broader aim of the sweeping proposal, which was introduced by left-leaning parliamentarian Kartika Liotard of the Netherlands, is to foster gender equality in the EU by combatting gender stereotypes on many fronts.
Hopefully they’re at least less hypocritical than Kyle Payne.
I agree, that the Icelandic parliamentary proposal is diffuse and aims not include all pornography (though ‘degrading content’ is difficult to define). But that’s not the case with the European proposal. Of course it’s a no-teeth bill, the European Parliament doesn’t have legislative initiative.
@viscaria
those sound nice. I love tights, but don’t wear them that much because they’re kind of a pain and too much money to get many pairs.
About $60, I think Marie. You might be able to find them cheaper elsewhere on site, I got mine for ยฃ25/$40 (but on a different website).
I absolutely can not, not buy any more heels I won’t wear. *sticks fingers in ears*
@ Viscaria
Tights, cold dead hands, etc.
(The Reynaud’s makes this joke a bit more macabre than I’d normally go for in this space.)
Why the fuck is Poxy whining about porn now?
SOD. OFF. YOU. BORING. WEE. FUCK.
Oh, are we going all Feegle? I could do that.
Also, these are flats so they don’t technically break the no heels ban. Teal Thai silk!

Nat, those boots are fab. Must resist the urge… I have too many combat boots as it is, if such a thing can be true.
Some Gal: SAS also has outlet stores IIRC.
natfantastic, Those boots are adorable. Want!
I would love to wear these penguin boots around Tom Martin.
Oh, I love the Rocket Dog Thai silk flats.
@Marie
I did a quick search on the US Amazon (that is your location? I may have remembered wrong) and found these, which I don’t think are the exact same, but are similar? They are $90.
I am now in love with about 20 different Rocket Dog shoes that I wouldn’t be able to wear for at least a year (I’m guessing).
@thenatfantastic
Do you know how comfortable the non-boots are? I want to add them to my list, but they don’t exactly look like something that is reasonable for me. *goes back to drooling at shoes anyway*
@thenatfantastic
thanks for the info. Sadly, I probably can’t buy them, but hopefully I find some like them for cheaper.
@cloudiah.
those are nice penguin boots. They’re even purple! (I like purple…)
@some gal
Thanks for bringing those up ๐ Sadly, I’m probably going to need to get an income before I go shoe shopping, since my mom can only afford to get me cheap ones.
@hellkell
I’ll have to tell my mom to look out for them. She loves outlets and will plan vacations around them sometimes. ๐
The fact of the matter is that laws like that don’t get passed because a small fraction of the population agrees. Iceland by the way is TINY (population wise). A majority of women and MEN support these laws.
Did you read their arguments on the trauma their studies have indicated children suffer from viewing certain types of pornography?
The ban has been around awhile.
As far as European proposal…there is no chance that will be passed into law. There is not support for it.
And as I stated earlier. Women watch porn too. Feminists watch porn too.
I’m home today because I am maxed out on vacation leave so last week my boss gave me a stern lecture about needing to take more time off. (I’m a bit of a workaholic.) I have a feeling I’m going to be doing some serious shoe shopping today. ๐
Kyle Payne’s coming for you!
