So Anita Sarkeesian, who apparently didn’t run off with all her Kickstarter money to found a Misandist Gynarchy in the wilds of Canada, has released the first video in her Tropes vs Women in Video Games project. (I’ve embedded it below.)
Naturally, this is causing great consternation in certain corners of the Internet (*cough* Reddit *cough cough* everywhere else that misogynistic nerds congregate *cough*). In the Man Boobz forum, Katz has started a contest to see who can find “the whiniest, brattiest, most entitled response” to Sarkeesian’s video on the Internet. So far Katz and Myoo have found a couple classic comments from irate Sarkeeianaphobes:
[H]ow does one go about stating that genders and gender roles are social constructs? I mean is evolution nothing to her? Does the patriarchy make male peacocks dress provocatively?
Yes. Yes it does.
And:
I’m gradually losing respect for the opposite sex. I’ve unfollowed people on tumblr who talk about how great she is, because it actually causes bile to rise in to my throat.
Yeah, that’s a totally reasonable response to a woman making a video about video games.
So anyway, I’m thinking we should bring the contest over here.
See what you can find! Consider it a sort of scavenger hunt.
Here’s my contribution, from the Men’s Rights subreddit, complaining that Damsels in Distress are the truly privileged ones:
Amazingly, this acutally got called out on r/mr as being pretty damn stupid.
Also, I have another question, to add to the stack of other questions I’ve been asking lately: Just why do you think so many guys get so angry when girls and women invade what they consider a male sphere, like gaming? (Also, why do they consider gaming to belong to boys and men?)
Oh, and here’s the video that’s causing all this hubbub:
Poxy, Can you link to something credible/informative about the Iceland thing?
Actually, that’s a good question. Some Girl, how do you keep your feet warm without socks? I hope there’s some sort of workaround, because having cold feet sucks.
@cloudiah
I love colorful socks! I had a pair that was stripey and rainbow, but sadly they have gotten a whole in them 🙁
I have never found sneakers that comfortable. They made my feet feel claustrophobic ever since I was a kid. I think part of it is that I never really liked the look so I never got used to the feel.
When I was a tween, I had these platform sandals (the platform part was covered in cork, I was so cool!) and I wore them everywhere. The straps fell off and I had my grandfather nail them back together. My mom made me wear sneakers during a trip to Disneyworld and my feet hurt so much. The next day, I went back to the sandals and had no problem because I was used to them. I don’t think I ever owned or did anything that my mom despised as much as she despised those sandals. 🙂
“Pornography is already banned in Iceland, and has been for decades”
“Iceland’s left-of-center government insists it is not setting out to sweep away racy magazines or censor sex. The ban would define pornography as material with violent or degrading content.”
Frankly: nothing about this ban appears to have anything to do with feminists…….

I’ve been going through a bright tights thing for a while (to be worn with a denim skirt and knee boots when it’s cold). Hue makes me happy.
(They make cute socks too.)
@CassandraSays
My feet don’t really get cold anymore. They are really sensitive to heat, though and they get blue at room temperature sometimes, but it has been checked out and everything is working fine. So, it is just one if those things that no one understands? I think I might run into problems if I could do more walking, but since a trip to the parking lot is a bit taxing, I don’t really have to worry about frostbite on the way to the car.
@some gal
those sandles sound cool 😀
I guess it’s one of those things where the same temperature feels different to different people. I have Reynaud’s disease (very common among Scots), so my feet and hands are always cold. I live in fleecy socks plus furry slippers indoors in the winter.
@cloudiah
I am jealous of your socks (even though I can’t wear them). I have socks with rubber duckies and Nightmare Before Christmas and crazy Christmas patterns that I used to wear year-round. I love that they are basically invisible and, if people notice, they normally appreciate the uniqueness. I can’t bring myself to get rid of any of my socks yet, just like I bought a pair of Croce heels (I heard they were comfy and they are!) in the hope that I’ll be able to go back to them.
If I can keep touching/rubbing my feet and that works in desensitizing them, then maybe I can move up to wearing socks for short periods and eventually wear them again. It just sucks that these things take so much time to work.
@CassandraSays
I had a rheumatologist suggest Reynaud’s because of the turning blue, but I don’t feel it. There is another condition that I forget the name of that deals with always feeling hot, but I don’t quite fit the criteria for it either. Same with circulation problems, I have the symptoms but not the actually problems that cause them.
My hands also don’t really get cold, but they don’t turn blue. It is all strange.
@some gal
you’re socks sound so cute!
Are the shoes comfy enough you can wear them?
With the Reynaud’s when it kicks in it’s like you can see the color draining out of your hands, starting at the fingertips and then moving down. The skin doesn’t actually go blue, more this sort of corpse-like off-white. Comes back in the same pattern, but in reverse. First time it happened it scared the hell out of me. Circulation issues are weird.
@Marie
My Crocs are comfy enough that I could wear them if they didn’t have a heel. I am hoping to work back up to them (like with the socks, thanks btw 🙂 ). I may never get there, but the idea that I could is worth the price of the shoes anyway. If I stop trying new medications that knock me on my ass and don’t help, I could focus on making progress on the physical therapy aspect instead of starting over after each one. It is hard to give up on a pill making things better, though. Luckily, my doctors are very non-shamey about what I can actually accomplish.
It used to be a lot worse before I got on the few medications I’m on (gabapentin for nerve pain/weird sensations, a muscle relaxer, and a pain killer). I am still learning how to listen to my body and stop before I push too hard. That is the hardest part of the whole thing, I think.
All my socks are boring T_T
@CassandraSays
I don’t know exactly what the rheumatologist saw that made him think Reynaud’s. I just remember sitting in the office and being asked what was up with my feet and being confused because I’d never noticed them doing anything that seemed strange to me.
@ some gal
well, yay for them being some comfy. Glad to hear some of the medicines make things better.
@Marie
Thanks. I’m sorry for making the thread all about me. (It’s gotta be better than the troll, I hope.)
Back to shoes, has anyone else tried Crocs? They don’t all look ridiculous. I believe a nurse recommended them as a good for foot pain thing. Any other brands people like for better than average comfort?
People say Crocs are comfy but I have a hard time imagining how they could be since they’re plastic. Never tried them, but plastic doesn’t sound comfortable.
For sandals the most comfortable brand I can think of is SAS. They have really squishy, cushiony footbeds, and very soft leather uppers. Never tried their non-sandals but I assume the loafers etc are probably comfortable too.
@some gal
I’ve never tried crocs, and the only ones I’ve seen look ridiculous. Maybe if they were pink. I like pink.
I should try that sandal brand then (SAS) I’m kind of picky about sandals, but not terribly.
some gal, I don’t mind the thread being all about you 🙂 It’s fun to talk to you (and other people here, just not the troll).
lol, the BEST whiny comments are from the video Amazing Atheist made about hers (which was him whining about her not having the comment section open – he accuses her of running away from criticism when in reality she just doesn’t want to sift through a sea of bullshit).

I’ve compiled some of the vial ones, but I left the whiney ones alone….too many of them
Keen sandals are extremely comfortable, and good for walking on all sorts of terrain. I even wear them tubing.
@CassandraSays
Thanks. I’ll write that down. My mom is pretty much sneakers-only (she has to wear them to work) and flip-flops, and everyone else I know has some other issue they have to contend with when they shop for shoes (wide feet, really small feet, etc.) that makes it hard for me to get recommendations for “average” footwear.
The plastic isn’t so bad on the pair I have (but I haven’t worn them out in the summer when I might change my mind about them). It is really soft and the shoes have a liner so you aren’t stepping on plastic. They are very giving and a bit bouncy. My pair looks like Mary Janes with an almost wedge heel. (I don’t know shoe terminology that well…) I think the bounciness will be good for all if Boston’s brick sidewalks. (They are hell on nice shoes!)
Shoe nostalgia: I just found a place where I could order a pair of my favorite shoes from when I was a teenage punk. Seriously tempted.
@hellkell
Thanks! I’ve started a list for the next time I shop for shoes.
