harassment hate irony alert men who should not ever be with women ever misogyny rape rape culture

Zerlina Maxwell challenges rape culture on Fox News, receives rape threats on Twitter.

zerlinaonfox

I’m still officially on my Man Boobz staycation, but I felt I needed to mention yet another example of a woman saying that men can stop rape … and getting rape threats in return.

Political analyst Zerlina Maxwell went on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News earlier this week and made the terrible mistake of suggesting to a hostile audience that men aren’t really doing any favors to women by telling them to arm themselves against rapists. Instead, as Salon notes, she said this:

“I don’t think that we should be telling women anything. I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there.” She told Hannity, “You’re talking about this as if it’s some faceless, nameless criminal, when a lot of times it’s someone you know and trust,” adding, “If you train men not to grow up to become rapists, you prevent rape.”

Indeed, increased rape awareness has contributed to a dramatic decrease in rape over the last thirty years.

But apparently a lot of men were shocked – shocked! – that a woman would suggest that their patronizing advice was less likely to prevent rape than rape prevention education aimed at the demographic group that is responsible for the overwhelmng majority of rapes. That is, men.

So, naturally, the angriest of these men decided they would show Maxwell just how wrong she was … by threatening her with rape on Twitter.

Here’s just one example:

Rape culture in action.

Maxwell’s supporters have stepped up to defend her and her remarks, and have started a hashtag — #TYZerlina —  to continue the discussion. If you’re on Twitter, join in .

Here’s the Fox News segment in question featuring Maxwell:

Oh hey guys, my existance is evil, and means that we aren’t even human any more! Very exciting week I’m having, learning all these new things about myself!

If atheists can’t tell insanity from simply evil, and I’m not religious, but insane, then I may well be evil since I can’t tell evil from insane, right?

As for pest control, can anyone, at all, explain to me how the fuck bra sizing works?! I haz a confuzed.

Kitteh — the argument is that religious people can tell what’s evil because their religion tells them what’s good and what’s evil. Since atheists lack that “moral compass” atheists can’t tell good from evil.

Not entirely sure how Poxy is fitting insanity into this, but I’ve heard that one a few dozen times.

What’s really weird is that Poxy clearly wants us to like hir. I never thought someone could be both condescending and obsequious at the same time, but there you go.

@ Poxy- What do you mean by rape awareness?

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Argenti

Well, we can be evil (or insane! or evil!) together, but never be able to tell if we are the same or not. We’ll be like Lewis Carroll characters or something.

*points to avatar* way ahead of you there! You can be Alice, or almost Alice? (Or erfworld’s Jack Snipe, he im inds me so much of the mad hatter 🙂 )

Or I can transform into one of the tweedles? Your choice my evilly insane brethren!

I have a sort of odd, longstanding desire for a pair of thigh-high brown boots. Like these ones:

Not really sure why, though, since I have no idea when I would ever wear them.

Some Gal Not Bored at All

I played Alice in an Alice and Wonderland play when I was little so I kinda want to Alice, but I think the Tweedles would fit the pair act thing a bit better. 🙂

Re: the actual thread, when Poxy said this:

I was even defended against Owly once (on the light side back then).

He was flat-out admitting to sockpuppeting, right? So… b-b-b-banhammer?

Either socking, or been here as Poxy before, either-fucking-way I was entirely correct when I said he’d been here before. If nothing else, the side-stepping of that makes him a disingenuous little … *trails off swearing*

I’m pissy, I’m attempting to get over it and deal with finding a dentist and I don’t like the idea and fuck it all. But my idiot brother broke one of his (for some stupid reason not removed) wisdom teeth, and needs it removed, without insurance. It’s kind of driving home how much I should deal with my cavity while I have insurance.

Some Gal — tweedles it is! Striped ones I hope? I have a lovely collection of stripes for EA concert wear (and arm warmers in general)

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Viscaria

Poxy totally interrupted our shoe conversation earlier so it is totally right that shoes interrupt the continuing trolling. 🙂

@Argenti

I have lots of striped socks I could wear on my hands? And I have some nice striped turtlenecks!

The only solace materialist atheists (who also can’t distinguish between evil and insane)

I see someone decided to take Assfacts for $1,000 from Alex.

I am happy and sad… I go home tomorrow.

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@pecunium

Well, when one is an ass…

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@pecunium

That was not in reference to the going home. Both hooray and boo for that. I think we’ve all been there.

Learn towards sad, the weather here’s been questionable at best, above freezing but not by much. Stay where it’s warm!

Some Gal — I don’t have striped shirts actually, so you wear that and I’ll wear my arm warmers and we’ll be a weird set of mismatched twins!

Damn you autocorrect!

@The Kittehs’:

:shrug: I don’t think I’ve ever met an atheist who said there’s no such thing as evil, or attributed it to insanity, or didn’t distinguish between them. I’m also not wild about assuming people who happen to be atheist fall into one group when it comes to opinions about anything much beyond not believing in a deity/deities.

The problem is materialism (which implies atheism), not atheism. Buddhists prove that atheists can even be religious. If you believe materialism is true, you believe that only what you can measure or prove by direct inference is real. I seriously doubt there’s a possibility for Free Will in that world view and so morality. OK, there’s a good chance that I’m wrong here. Dawkins’ pal Dennett wrote a whole book about that problem (‘Freedom Evolves’) but I found it unconvincing.

@Argenti:

Kitteh — the argument is that religious people can tell what’s evil because their religion tells them what’s good and what’s evil. Since atheists lack that “moral compass” atheists can’t tell good from evil.

Counter that with Euthyphro’s dilemma!

@timetravellingfool

@ Poxy- What do you mean by rape awareness?

Something like education and countering social prejudices about sexual violence?

@Viscaria

He was flat-out admitting to sockpuppeting, right? So… b-b-b-banhammer?

At least I’m not accused of being MRAL anymore.

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Argenti

That’ll work fine since for all we know one of us is evil and the other is insane. I certainly can’t tell the difference. 😉

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Poxy

And what do we use to counter the ableism, asshole?

Poxy
Poxy

Ableism, Ableism why do we bother to stay? why are you running away?

Argenti Aertheri
11 years ago

How is that even relevant? I was going to ask if you intended that wording to mean that you want to counter my point via Euthyphro’s dilemma, or whether you wanted me to counter my own point, but it’s irrelevant. Also, subtle distinctions are clearly not your thing.

In any case, it doesn’t really matter to the argument at hand. Whether moral things are moral because “god says” or whehther “god says” they’re moral because they’re moral? No bearing on whether atheists can judge morality without morality being ascribed by religion by religion.

For example, murder is wrong, that’s a nearly universal ethical belief, whether your god has called it immoral because it’s immoral, or you see it as immoral because your god says it’s immoral, the difference there is moot as the end result is the same — you, like the rest of us, see murder as immoral.

Yes, I am the master of run on sentences, blame Latin, and more precisely, Cicero.

Anyways, murder is a legal concept, as well as an ethical one, and legally speaking there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of ways to determine insanity from criminality. Absolutely none of which require religion.

As for you being called a sock, not Mr. Al? Yeah, no. Mr. Al is a notorious fan of sock puppeting; “is a sock puppet” and “is Mr. Al” are nothing like mutually exclusive (in fact, the entire logical set called “is Mr. Al” is a subset of “is a sock puppet”).

Pecunium — you around? I’d love to see you give Poxy a good dose of Kant!

Argenti Aertheri

“Ableism, Ableism why do we bother to stay? why are you running away?”

Don’t leave me Some Gal, how can I ever be an effective tweedle all on my own?!

Poxy — wtf are you on about there? If that was an attempt at an argument from song lyrics, cite your song.

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Poxy

You’re running away? That sounds nice. Run faster.
