How not to impress the ladies on OkCupid

cupids2

So @catches_stars on Twitter is pretty hilarious. She’s also got an OkCupid account, and regularly posts snippets of her conversations with some of the more problematic dudes who contact her, some on her main Twitter account and some on @okcupid_TXT. With her permission, and because I’m too lazy to actually write a post today, I’m passing along a few of my favorites.

This overeager fellow has a rather sudden change of heart when his stated plan runs into an obstacle, that obstacle being that @catches_stars finds him completely repulsive.

okeager

This guy is either totally high or trying some weird and misguided PUA wizardry on her. (It does not succeed.)

oksecret

This foot-obsessed fellow spammed her with the same message from several different accounts.

oktoes

This guy, who seems to be shirtless in his profile pic, gets what I assume is, to him, a very disappointing answer.

okbody

As does this fellow.

okchicks

Romance is hard.

If you come across a dictionary, and flip to the page with the n-word, and it MAKES NO MENTION of the derogatory implications, it is a terrible dictionary. The “dictionary definition” is incomplete and useless.

That’s your opinion.

So you think “a dark skinned person of colour” is a good definition of the n-word?

;_; Trolls never respond to my points.

I’m never sure if this is a good or a bad thing.

Wrongheaded ideas like eugenics and game have real world consequences when put into practice, which actually results in real world consequences, and real world feelings.

Well, you see when the practice of game has negative consequences for women it’s unfortunate and Marty here, “feels” for us.

Eugenics, however is a-okay as long as it’s practiced the way Martyn here believes it should be. No more Downs syndrome.

I feel a litle queasy.

Could you get a bucket? I just throw mine in a lingerie bag in the washing machine and line dry. I’ve had pretty good luck with reshaping the cups while wet if necessary for most of them. I know it is not what you are supposed to do, but I don’t care.

Wrongheaded ideas like eugenics and game have real world consequences when put into practice, which actually results in real world consequences, and real world feelings.

Is it wrongheaded to enable screening for genetic diseases and for people to make rational, informed decisions based on whether or not they can provide a decent life for a child at risk of being born severely disabled to the point of a lifetime of suffering? That came from Eugenics too!

That is why people have this wonderful ability called critical thinking which enables them to separate theory from practice. Many practices which are based on the theory of Eugenics are evil; you’d never see many people approve of horrific ideas like forced sterilisation or the “final solution”; but I dare you to find someone who thinks screening is wrong who can think critically.

Abstract theory is for pot-headed philosophy undergrads and theologians

It’s also the basis for science. You’re using a computer, amirite?

For the rest of the world, theories only have value when they accurately predict real-world phenomena

They also have value when they’re falsified in their original form through progress in the field. As they can be enhanced over time. Eugenics and Game are the same in that regard. (I personally believe game is based on faulty concepts, but that doesn’t reduce its value when discussed purely as theory)

To provide two examples, the theory of gravity and the theory of evolution have developed over time based on newer information. Like we now know that all evolution is micro-evolution and that macro-evolution is just many iterations of micro-evolution.

I am endorsing the proposal to ignore the asshat troll who doesn’t understand the purpose of this site, in favor of talking about weekend plans. That said, I don’t have anything super exciting planned for the weekend. Saturday I plan to putter around and then go have an early bird dinner with my elderly mother, followed by watching the rest of the Firefly episodes. Sunday I am really hoping to take my depressed friend out to brunch, although as of now he is refusing to commit. And then I’m kind of hoping to make a cheese/mushroom/nut loaf thing that I haven’t made in a while but have been craving.

I don’t know how it’s been in your neck of the woods, but the cold and flu season here in the mid-Atlantic has been awful.

Flu season in central TX has been bad. Wide swaths of our office has been out with various crud.

I usually wash my bras on the delicate cycle and then air dry.

Martyn really cannot understand that there are no such things as theories absent their implications. I would feel bad for him if he weren’t being such an ableist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic ass. I feel queasy for having tried to help him.

I still think that he might have an a-ha moment and then think this was all worth it. He still won’t understand that that doesn’t make it worth it for us.

Parents chose to make those abortions. You’re entitled to your views and I’m entitled to my pro-choice view. I happen to agree with those that chose to abort, you obviously don’t. If you’re ever in the position of making the choice for your own child, then choose what you feel is right.

So what does everyone who’s not Martyn have planned this weekend?

Cleaning, packing, more cleaning, more packing. That’ll likely be my plans for the next few weekends…but then my plans will be “finally moving to Boston (and in with my partner) permanently,” so that’s pretty exciting. 🙂

@Nobinayamu

Yes I have. Twice in fact.

It was posted in-case anyone was unaware, pre-emptively before entering a discussion on the merits of it and because it was jokingly mentioned and I wanted to add a reference point to start a discussion on it using a balanced definition.

Oh, really. How interesting; I must have missed that. Did you provide a citation, complete with links because that might completely change my mind.

I’m just kidding – I don’t give a fuck.

How many men have tried to pick you up using practices of “game theory”? Have you ever dealt with Kino escalation after you’ve made it clear that you don’t like being touched? What makes you more of an expert than me, your Barnes and Noble membership card?

I want to go makeup shopping one day with CassandraSays, hellkell, and Nobinayamu. XD

Cheese/mushroom/nut loaf sounds intriguing.

Oh, I think it was somebody on here who linked me to this recipe for beer/cheese/mustard bread a while back? Anyway, I made it a couple of weeks ago, and it was DELICIOUS. I think I’ll make it again soon, with even more cheese and mustard, because you can never have too much cheese and mustard.

eeeeeeee getting dressed up! and weddings! eeeeee I’m vicariously excited for your clients.

I have to say, I really enjoy helping brides generally, but I FLOVE helping my two bride couples. I just feel like we all have a lot of fun and they don’t seem to be affected by “bigger, better, dress syndrome” the way other brides can be.

Hooray for your new church! Congratulations on finding one that is right for you!

@cloudiah

Yay for brunch! Is it a buffet (or “real brunch” as a friend and I decided it should be called yesterday)? Either way, I hope that you can convince the friend. I know how hard it can be to want to go out and do things when I’m depressed, but I’ve rarely regretted it even if I have to cry during some of it. Maybe if you tell your friend it is okay to leave at any time and you won’t be upset, that would help? (Sorry if I’m giving advice when none is needed/wanted or that has already been said.)

Hey, did you guys hear that the “Girls Gone Wild” company (founded by Asshat Supreme Joe Francis) has declared bankruptcy?

hellkell, it’s from the Greens cookbook, and miraculously I found the recipe online! What’s funny is that I don’t much care for either nuts or mushrooms on their own, but I love this recipe. You can use different nuts and different cheeses; it’s kind of fun to play around with.

Some Gal Not Bored at All

@Martyn

No I’m not. When did I assume you have never had feelings for a guy? Just because you have doesn’t mean you are not homophobic. You were in the thread I searched for Argenti this morning.

When did I say that I had a problem with any of the reasons that a woman might choose to terminate a pregnancy?

…?

So wannabe snarky and passive agressive; I love it.

Don’t try to hide it, Martyn, let your whiny-ass-titty baby flag fly!

Wow, this dipshit “balance” fetishist takes tedium and toxic privilege to whole new levels of deplorable shit. He rivals Tom Martin for sheer incompetence paired with high condescension. I must admit, my favorite foible of his is how he goes on about “Critical Thinking 101” while making a whole bunch of claims with either no justification or shitty half-assed justification that just reveal how lazy and biased he is.

Pro-tip for Fartyn Ale: don’t try to cast yourself as balanced and objective about eugenics and then go on to sing its praises. It’s WAY transparent, you privilege-blind douchecopter.

Have you ever dealt with Kino escalation after you’ve made it clear that you don’t like being touched?

I’ve dealt with both women and men getting too touchy-feely before, that happens with or without anyone being a PUA – some people are just touchy-feely people and those people can be annoying if you don’t like it.

How many men have tried to pick you up using practices of “game theory”?

None that I know of. Have you had many negative experiences? If so, why not share them. People might find these comments and then learn what not to do if they misguidedly try testing out PUA concepts.

Are you going to tell me screening is a bad thing? I doubt it.

You’re another person who can’t separate theory from practice – critical thinking 101.
