If you aren’t too worn out by all the Presidents’ Day revelry — and the ritual Donning of the Fake Lincoln Beards — I would like to welcome you to the first edition of the 2013 Man Boobz Pledge Drive! (There will be 3 in all.)
I’ll try to keep this brief and repeat what I said last time: If you enjoy this blog, and can afford it, please click on the “donate” button below and sending a few bucks my way. Or, if you’d prefer, a massive quantity of bucks. You don’t need a PayPal account to donate; you can use a credit card, and I think there are other options as well.
There’s a bit more urgency to my request this time: I’m really and truly broke at the moment. Things should get better later in the year, but right now I could use all the help I can get.
I appreciate any and all contributions. And I’d also like to do a quick shout-out to the those who send me much needed $ between pledge drives, whether these are one-shot deals or regular infusions.
That said, if you’re also broke and can’t swing a contribution now, I completely understand. There are lots of ways to contribute to this blog besides cold hard cash, and lots of you contribute enormously every day with smart and funny comments and cartoons and silly parody MRA posters and so on and so on. Which is awesome. It’s the community here that keeps me going.
So thanks!
Oh, and if you need more persuading, here’s Tom Baker (no, really) begging for bucks during a PBS pledge drive.
That last comment from David illustrates the difference between him and Elam quite nicely.
Sent what I could. This place helps keep me sane.
I don’t get how David can link to the classist SPLC article while.his followers defend their poverty.
Beefore the peanut gallery screams about my writing, I am using a phone. Good luck being “financially underwater”.
I like to think that he is this Dragon Slayer. It’s more fun that way.
sonichu: David didn’t link it, it doesn’t actually appear to make any classist statements (it mentions that a scumbag is poor? I guess?), and you bring nothing to the table. Fuck off.
The Southern Poverty Law Centre is classist?
inurashii: Which article are they referring to?
Their name. It includes the word “poverty.”
Sonichu, mentioning someone’s underwater mortgage isn’t inherently classist. Lots of people, rich and poor, have underwater mortgages. It simply means that a homeowner has more debt on the property than the property is worth on the market. It’s a reflection of the state of the housing market.
So then his underwater mortgage and health were both appropriate subjects for an organization with poverty in the title to attack? And… somehow not classist.
sonichu, can you explain how that clause was an attack?
“It has poverty in the title so it cannot be classist.”
Dear lord, when has the SPLC helped poor people ever? Most of their targets are poor and they lash out at people for their financial status. 🙂
Sonichu, if you want to see a real example of classism, try this one:
It’s from earlier in the thread. It’s not aimed at MarkyMark.
Or how about this comment, which I didn’t let through moderation:
I’m sure I can find many more examples from MRAs if you’d like. MRAs often mock people for being poor, fat, disabled, etc etc.
I’m not totally okay with mentioning his home situation in that context–it does kind of read like ‘well, this is why he’s so bitter,’ which isn’t great.
But it’s hardly, um, “look how awful poor people are.” It’s… “this dude who writes hateful stuff is in poverty.”
Citation needed.
Also, Sonichu, if you have problems with that one sentence in the SPLC article, I suggest you take it up with the SPLC, as no one here is responsible for writing that sentence.
Inur…etc
Can you explain how it is appropriate to mention someone’s financial status or health when you should be talking about their views? Lol
Sorry, sonichu, you failed your gotcha roll. Try again.
Nope. Our house. Your accusation of classism, Put up or shut up. Lol.
You linked to the article and the author’s other work. You neverm mentioned any concern with his classism before so you seem to condone it.
Sonichu, one of our TROLLS put up the goddamned link. Take it up with Preggo.
Also, you aren’t actually arguing effectively for the comment’s classism. Cat pics, or GTFO.
So mentioning someone is “financially underwater” is not classist here. Gotcha, I see double standards are alive and well here.
Wow, it’s almost like sonichu is searching for reasons to forbid people to cite the SPLC.
How do you feel about the ACLU?
Sonichu, I wouldn’t have written that sentence because it might be seen as mockery, even if it wasn’t intended that way. I assume, since the SPLC doesn’t actually think that poor or disabled people are bad, that the writer was trying to provide a little bit of color, noting that Marky Mark writes about these sorts of personal things on his blog along with all the slut-bashing. They probably should have mentioned his love of motorcycles instead.
