Joanna – yeah, fairly curvy in the Renaissance, though the fashion styles varied enough from country to country to make it difficult to pick an overall favoured look. Certainly in Mr K’s time curves were the go, but that was all over, not just skinny body and big breasts (think Rubens as the extreme example). In the 19th century curves were in. One critic attacked Millais’ Eve of St Agnes painting with the comment “I do not like that skinny woman on the gridiron”. There’s no way that woman would be called skinny now, even allowing for the bulk of her dress (and gods do I love that dress, lol).
@Some Gal
If I’d seen this first in another context I’d have pegged it satire or parody without question, as it indeed repeats every possible sex entitlement idiocy in such a ridiculous manner, plus it looks somewhat professionally done. Not necessarily by pros but done with some skill anyway. It’s incredibly sad if it’s serious. Words aren’t enough to describe the level of pathetic it is if serious.
Deoridhe, The focus is on supermodels because most supermodels are highly attractive. Just replace supermodels with “attractive women”. And that is regardless of culture. American, Norwegian, Kenyan, Japanese, etc… Most people that are supermodels in those countries would be viewed as attractive in all the other countries.
timetravellingfool, Maybe you can give an example of a culture clearly defining what is attractive in direct opposition to what someone innately views as attractive. If anything culture just reinforces our already held innate desires and beliefs. And even that is debatable.
Adds the fashion industry to the list of things that NNY doesn’t understand. Note – words mean things, including the word “supermodel”.
Deoridhe, I didn’t call you a republican. Try reading it again.
NNY: You know, when you talk, you show how stupid you are. You might want to work on that.
@eline
If it were parody or satire (even if failed), some part of the humor would point at the Nice Guy and laugh at him. All of the digs I can see are at the women.
Cassandra, Yes and supermodel means paying a man or woman large sums of money to help a company sell products by looking attractive and being noticed so ads are actually viewed and not ignored by people.
“And that just sounds like something a stupid republican would say.”

Ok, you really can’t understand English and have a poor grasp of language. Poor child; I know it’s hard, but if you put in a lot of effort, one of these days you can actually understand denotations and connotations in language. If you’re very lucky, you might even start getting a handle on logic!
One of the ways you can see the spread of standardized body shapes and grooming styles for women is in old videos of the Miss Universe pageant. Echidne posted some a few years ago to compare and they were very telling. In the sixties the women from different countries were all very different. In 2009 or 10, I don’t remember what year she posted, they all looked remarkably similar.
Deoridhe, I’m actually typing. But let us not split hairs.
Nope, that is not what the word supermodel means. Maybe you should stick to commenting on things you know something about. Not sure what that leaves you to talk about, though.
Deoridhe, Yes. Making the claim that gay men only have sex with other men because of Glee is something a stupid republican would say.
Did you make that claim? No…hence I didn’t call you a republican.
So what I am saying is that troll boy is showing that he is too young or too ignorant to realize that things have changed dramatically because of the interwebs.
Now he’s getting dull. David, did you check to see if the IP matched our old friend who wanted to film secretly film all his sexual encounters?
@NNY- I’m just going to go ahead and assume what you say what people finde ‘innately attractive’ is what you find attractive. So, ever hear of Burmese neck rings? That a thing you’re into? Mutilated genitals? Force fed women in western Africa? Hanging earlobes of the dayak community? Mutilated feet in China? Not to mention the different parts of the body that people find erotic. Anyone else care to add an example?
Dude, you explaining it actually just makes you sound stupider. Even “stupid Republicans” are aware of the Greek culture.
@NNY
Here’s an example: fit guys are considered attractive culturally. I don’t “innately” find that attractive. I don’t like sports or fitness activities and guys who look like they are into those things at all don’t do anything for me.
Actually, here’s a funny story for everybody else: I had a roommate who was dating a thin, in-shape, muscled guy, who loved soccer and didn’t read much. The latter right away makes guys less attractive to me. I want someone I share that passion with. Anyway, my roommate wanted me to say her boyfriend was really attractive. I was very nice and said that he was good-looking, but not my type. (She knew my boyfriend who is a bigger guy.) She kept pressing it and it turned out she really wanted me to say how much I wanted to sleep with her boyfriend. Fucked up, huh?
I know necks were really big in Japan, Tokugawa era and earlier.
@NNY why are you ignoring the reasons people don’t like this video. The comments on the first page had many reasons, but you are stuck on one. And you have claimed you have no problems with this video.
And even when people say that folks can have standards do you ignore their statements and continue to rant about how this about standards. THIS IS ABOUT ENTITLEMENT. This man clearly feels entitled to sex with a woman he finds attractive. He isn’t entitled to ANY womans body. And did you see my breakdown? About several very rapey comments in the video. You don’t see a problem with that aspect of the video at all?
Also the blackened teeth. Even staying within the same culture, people would not be so keen on that look now.
She kept pressing it and it turned out she really wanted me to say how much I wanted to sleep with her boyfriend. Fucked up, huh?
For people who date others due to status instead of intrinsic value, it actually makes a lot of sense. You not wanting to have sex with her boyfriend means that she isn’t better than you based on your sexual partners. It’s a for of homosocial hierarchy determination – much more common within men’s homosocial bonding, in fact one could argue central to it, since men have described dating women they didn’t find attractive due to a desire to remain high status; the entire motivation behind rating women based on a single, universal scale of 1 to 10 is based around the desire to arrange oneself homosocially based on partner attractiveness.
For people who date based on intrinsic value, this whole dance just seems really weird, but there is a logic and rational behind it – it’s just a rational which depends on extrinsic value of people rather than intrinsic.
@Deoridhe
That’s a take on that I hadn’t heard before. Most people I’ve told the story to thought that having a roommate who really wanted to sleep with your boyfriend would probably be a pain in the ass.
Melody, I can’t reasonably reply to everyone and answer everyone’s questions. I don’t see it as entitlement (in the sense that he can just “lay claim” to her). I just see it as he has a burning desire to have sex with the girls and he wished the girls felt the same way.
@Deoridhe Totally know what you mean. I had a friend who went after my bf because I was dating him. She got with him and I found out and walked away. Everyone was mad at me for not fighting for him, but I didn’t want to fight over a guy who would cheat on me. After I didn’t try to get him back she dumped him too. We aren’t friends anymore, but I’ve heard she has continued the trend.
I guess she revealed what my bf was all along. Doesn’t mean I have to like her though.
