The Men’s Rights Subreddit: A net exporter of hate

A new shipment of angry MRAs is on its way!
A new shipment of angry MRAs is on its way!

Oh, Reddit, not again. So about a week ago, a woman posted what seemed to be a heartfelt and sorrowful confession to r/confession with the self-explanatory title “I cheated on my sweetheart of a husband for 3 years with my violent, abusive ex. This is the one secret I am taking to my grave.”

Now,  r/confession purports to be a subreddit devoted to helping out those who confess their wrongdoings, and the sidebar warns potential commenters not to be abusive: “No personal attacks, we are not here to make people feel bad.”

But Reddit being Reddit – that is, a hotbed of resentful “nice guys” always looking for an excuse to vilify women in general or a woman in particular – many of the commenters attacked the OP as an evil “scumbag,” or worse. While the worst comments were deleted by the mods, many attacks on the OP remain, some with literally hundreds of upvotes. Those who expressed any degree of empathy for the OP found their comments roundly downvoted.

After a few days, the discussion died down.

But then, after several days of silence, a new wave of abusive comments started to appear.  Like this one:

COmomwhore

And this:

COcuntywhore

Oh, but there’s more:

COnastyover

I’ve saved the worst for last. (I’ve also included the response from the confessor herself.) TRIGGER WARNING for violence.

.

.

.

CONkingdick

So how did a dead thread like this come to life again, and so unpleasantly? Well, you guessed it: it got linked to in r/mensrights and later in r/redpill, a smaller and even more extreme “men’s rights” subreddit.  And indeed, if you look at the comment histories of the people I’ve just quoted, you’ll see that most of them also posted in either r/mensrights or r/redpill around the time they made these comments.

It’s a fair guess that many of the upvotes that these terrible comments got also came from visiting r/menrights-ers.

Back in r/mensrights, one commenter, disgusted by all this, chronicled some of the bad behavior of his MRA comrades:

COibm

A lot more people besides IBM2431 are going to have to stand up and speak out if they want to clean up r/mensrights’ well-deserved reputation as a net exporter of hate.

Not that r/confession is absolved of blame here. While commenters there piled on this woman, who seemed sincerely sorry for what she said she had done, the r/confession regulars found nothing wrong with the behavior of another commenter — a dude, of course — who confessed he’d “fapped” a number of times to cam footage he found of a friend of his sister’s masturbating — which was evidently recorded and put online without her knowledge or consent.

NOTE: By the time this post goes up, it’s possible and even likely that the mods of r/confession will have deleted the worst of the comments from the r/mensrights and r/redpill invaders. But they should still be visible in the comment histories of those who posted them.

<blockquoteHe definetly needs a reality check from hell. geez I don’t even know where to begin on how to fix this kind of problem…

It’s his problem. All of it. It’s his job to fix it, not every woman he comes across. Frankly, I don’t care what made him this way, I’m more concerned about him hurting someone now.

@Hellkell I just thought they captured the tone perfectly. It honestly does read like the Daily Mail to a T. Speaking of which, they recently wrote an article calling an eight year old child leaving her gymnastics class a leggy beauty*.

@hellkell
That’s exactly the problem, he’s not fixing it, and every woman he comes across has to deal with it, or fall prey to it. it’s only a matter of time before something tragic happens.

“My favorite troll fail is when they admit that they’re acting based on emotion, like this one did, and then whine about feminists being illogical.”

My favorite is when I take one up and say “okay, present your argument in a logical format” and they never talk to me again.

Since GGG dude gives me the creeps, I’m just going to paste some brain bleach of kitties hugging stuffed animals.

I don’t think I can feel bad for these guys. Sometimes there is a twinge, but then the borked logic and the treating of other people as commodities crushes that.
“Women are illogical and irrational and emotional! The logical, rational response is to get really angry angry and beat them up/whine on the internet about them making you want to beat them up!” Gets old. Maybe this is why they won’t respond to requests for a logical explanation. They think they are logical and don’t want to repeat themselves?

Also, re; octopuses. Octopods is my preference. From the order, Octopoda. Is that so wrong? Am I butchering it horribly by dropping the e?

My friend swears it’s “octopodus” but hell if I know.

Re: octopus plural — octopodus is definitely very wrong. I don’t think it’s actually a word, but Pecunium was right, the Latin for eight-feet would be octopedes. Octopods idk, sounds cute enough to be legit?

Could always just go for octopuses, or using octopus as already plural, like virus.

whataboutthemoonz — you’re 21? But been an EA fan since the Bonny Tyme Pyrate days? That’d have made you what, 13 then? Damn, wish my taste had been that good at 13!

What is it with MRAs and their obsession with “consequence”? It seems they want a world in which women suffer the most serious consequences for doing healthy and harmless things (enjoying sex, having sex with men they’re actually attracted to, having more than one partner in their entire lifetimes) while men suffer no consequences for rape, paedophilia and domestic violence.

LOLWUT?

Are you saying that people cannot control their actions? Or is it just women who can’t restrain their impulse to sleep around? I know women whose husband have cheated on them repeatedly and were certainly not okay with it(as they didn’t cheat). I understand that you think the rules you demand that men follow do not apply to your sex; but you’re misinformed. Also, I live in the USofA where most men do not get away with rape, pedophilia, or domestic violence. And the fact that they once did really doesn’t excuse this womans behavior. That was then, this is now. And the biggest irony is that the guy she was cheating on got away with domestic violence against her because she kept coming back and giving him exactly what he wants: sex! Besides, these MRAs, whoever they are, aren’t the only ones “obsessed” with responsibility and the consequences of peoples actions.

Awwww, baby octopi! That’s adorable.

On the youngish side ourself, but we try to keep our mouth shut. It’s complicated and I’m not interested in playing age games with people. Ain’t the years, it’s the mileage, don’tchaknow?

And I can understand that, “You’re an asshole but I pity you,” feeling. I have a friend who’s been sliding down that incline, and he’s starting to hit that point. I love the guy, but he’s becoming a person I don’t like. (Or maybe he always was, and I’m just REALIZING it.)

I hope you mean the asshole incline in general, because if there are multiple dudes out there demanding girlfriends from the government that’s not a very encouraging thought.

There was a Flounce — Part Deux? I hope this time he remembered to use his Big Boy voice. He struck me as someone who still clutches a security blanket, but he convinces himself it’s OK because his nickname for it is Tits, or whatever.

Octopods seems to go nicely with other things derived from scientific, like cephalopods and gastropods.

I want to be able to use the term ‘octopedal locomotion’ legitimately somehow, but I think that is pushing it…not that the opportunity is likely to arise anytime soon anyway. sigh.

I don’t have the energy to deal with Purple Star tonight. Can someone please explain to them that they’re wrong about everything?
