The Thinking Housewife: Women in combat means women using … BIRTH CONTROL! Eek!

No, seriously, this band is called Birth Control.
No, seriously, this band is called Birth Control.

Unsurprisingly, our old friend “The Thinking Housewife” is aghast at the notion of women serving in combat. What is a little surprising is why. In one of her many recent posts on the subject she offers this unique take on the subject:

There are so many unexamined consequences of the full integration of women into the military that one barely knows where to start, but one of the obvious places is with the fact that the Armed Forces will be increasingly in the business of population control.

Yes, that’s right: women in combat means women using birth control. The horror!

You see, women who are nine momths pregnant can’t exactly serve on the front lines. So that means the military is going to have to get in the business of helping its women soldiers avoid becoming pregnant.

In addition to providing rations and equipment, troops in combat will need ample supplies of contraceptives — and under this mentality, it will be the military’s responsibility to prevent pregnancy. Given that pregnancies can be, even in the best of circumstances, “unintended,” a woman who becomes pregnant on tour after her unit runs out of birth control pills or condoms will now have cause to blame the military for her offspring’s existence. We will almost certainly see women suing the Army for damages after “unintended” pregnancy. And as a consequence, the military will need to become more and more involved in the effective sterilization of their female troops.

Um, what? Sterilization? When women stop using birth control, they can become pregnant. Heck, they can become pregnant while still using birth control. Calling female birth control “sterilization” is a bit like calling a condom a vasectomy.

She ends her piece with this doozy:

As I said before, women don’t join the military as equals of men in order to defend their country. They join it to destroy their country.  An egalitarian military must embrace socially destructive ideals. What can be more emblematic of our times than a military unit equipped with guns to destroy the enemy and contraceptives to destroy future soldiers?  We have lost both the will to fight and the will to live.

Time to pull out the Don Draper “what?” gif again.

Actually, I don’t think that will be adequate to convey the sheer WTFery of that conclusion. I’m pulling out the big guns this time.

Yeah, I’m a little bemused by this huge fear that humans will go extinct if we aren’t constantly keeping an eye on it.

Guys. GUYS. Seven BILLION of us. Not gonna die out. It’s okay. We can relax about it.

Ah, but you see, this isn’t about the world. It’s about white people the United States. You see, usonian women have a duty to keep the white population of the U.S. going because arglebargle. After all, how is our military going to keep killing indefinite numbers of brown people terrorists without more soldiers? Argle, bargle. QED.

RE: Tulgey

We have a lot of fucking people trying to immigrate to our goddamn country. I am not worried about the USA collapsing for lack of population, or even lack of white people. From what I hear, it did fine for THOUSANDS of years without them.

First, I love the implication that providing male soldiers with basic healthcare and services is just fine, and totally necessary for the defense of one’s country, but doing the same for women is an unbearable burden and will cause the civilization to cave in. After all, modern militaries since the second half of the 19th century spent money on providing soldiers with education, enforcing bans against having sex with women in invaded countries (based on dangers real or imagined), and treating soldiers for STDs’ — all of which costs a hell of a lot more than birth control pills. In fact, these services for soldiers sometimes included the military maintaining brothels with “safe” women — but something tells me that TTH would absolutely applaud a military being in the business of human trafficking and sex slavery, even if it ultimately results in lawsuits and a whole lotta national shame.

Second, much as I hate bringing the Nazis into a discussion, TTH’s complaint that birth control destroys “future soldiers” has a very distinct wiff of Nazi ideology to it. The Nazis even maintained camps where women were raped and impregnated against their will, so they could supply the Reich with soldiers. What’s your bet TTH is a neo-Nazi? Frankly, at this point, I’d say it’s at least a distinct possibility.

I don’t understand why people are afraid of whites going extinct. I mean…so? White is a genetic feature not an entire species.

I’ll preface this with, I’m Not A Biologist or Geneticist, so my understanding may be incorrect. I thought that race (I’m going to ignore ethnicity because it’s at least partly culturally defined) could not be detected through any type of DNA or RNA test. In some part, it’s because of phenotypes, but also because the range of normal [insert anatomical/other biological marker here] overlaps so widely that it is simply not possible to tell.

Your point about species is a good one: we can all interbreed with each other. From an environmentalist conservation perspective as applied to animals going extinct, there is no reason to favour one (racism-based) “type” over another.

We’re all just stardust anyways. 🙂

Hell, I’m not a scientist, and I can easily tell you that’s true, because the definition of race changes over time and area. Pretty sure ‘Irish’ was considered a race at some point in my country; it’s not now.

@Joanna – maybe try reading up on white supremacy on any one of the thousands of websites out there talking about why it’s awful and dangerous?

I got treated to a lovely 20 minute diatribe last night against the evils of abortion, birth control and Muslim hordes outbreeding us white folk when I filled in on organ at a Catholic Church for a friend of mine. So tedious. Plus racial genocide because abortion rates are higher for blacks and hispanics in the US? With a dollop of ‘we are working on an interfaith mission with our Muslim brethren to end the culture of death.’ WTF?

I was so relieved that mild-mannered older priest had a nice homily this morning about Stan Musial’s funeral. I was afraid it was one of the canned messages they make them preach. (I’ve filled in there before around election time and two different deacons delivered the same homily Sat/Sun)

This is the woman who was begging for a troll award, right?

Eli, I think it was Sunshine Mary (sp?) who was begging for the troll award, but I have trouble telling them apart. They are both utter tools.

It’s time for some Moby.

I highly doubt Unthinking Housewife is a Neo-Nazi, although I think it’s pretty clear that her ideology comes from a similar place of authoritarianism and control. I don’t know how far back the notion of “white” populations (really, the “right kind” of “white”) being overwhelmed by inferior peoples goes, but such thinking precedes the explicit ideologies of Nazism by several decades, back into the mid- to late-nineteenth century. No, it’s just the same old spring Nazism drew from, with its dog-whistle-ish worries about population being thinly-veiled racial concerns.

@drst Well I could, but I’ll still fail to see their point of view.

I remember this (ginger) guy I knew was fretting over how gingers were such a minority of the population and that they were going extinct. Unless someone is willing to breed gingers like show cats, the fact stands that dominant genes will always over shadow recessive genes. That’s evolution. I mean why get pissy that there are no neanderthals anymore?

Chewing on trolls is only fun if they have actual conviction. People who just disagree with you for giggles are probably socks.

I was just mulling over tTHW’s name. It’s an insult in that it implies that all other housewives don’t think – otherwise it would be called “A Thinking Housewife” instead of using the definite article. Also, thinking, she’s doing it wrong.

Joanna, The blond/redhead extinction urban legend has been going around for about 150 years. It all comes back to racism.

…until the recessive genes meet up again in succeeding generations. Despite Mendelian genetics being taught at the middle-school level, some people still think heredity works by blending and swamping.

My friend is from Poland and is an only child whose mother was 1) sick, 2) dead, and now 3) he’s dealing with the final arrangements of property and lawyers. So I’m going to give him a pass. That plus he hires me to sing at funerals for $100 a pop.

Racist creep is unfortunately the new parish minister. Mild-mannered older guy is retiring. Friend says racist priest used to BE a muslim and re-converted to catholicism and entered the seminary. Makes it even more WTF that he trotted out that they were going to outbreed us because BIRTH CONTROL. Why aren’t you out there breeding, Mr. Priest?

And I’d really hate to hear what he says about women in combat positions. Maybe I’ll get to find out next week. If I do, I will report back.

Ha! I never explored the notion beyond what I learned in school, but I figured if it was true, it was something very silly to worry about. My red-headed acquaintance also believes fluoride and chem trails are killing us all so I guess I should have drawn up some skepticism. Lol.
