Oh dear. Our friends the Men’s Rights Redditors have discovered Mr.Ian Ironwood’s little treatise on sexbots. While some are a bit skeptical about the reality of the (non-existent) Human-Robot Personal Relationship Act — more skeptical, anyway, than Ironwood or Vox Day before him — this doesn’t stop the regulars from offering all sorts of distressing and/or hilarious opinions on the subject.
For example, OuiCrudites suggests that women have made sexbots inevitable by generally being such a pain in the ass, and MaunaLoona compares female sexuality to the railroad monopolies of the 19th century:
In a later comment, OuiC elaborates on his “most women are shitty” thesis:
MaunaLoona, meanwhile, agrees with Ironwood that developing the AI for sexbots won’t be a big challenge, because the average American woman is dumb and has a terrible personality.
A Canadian Redditor steps in to point out that the alleged “legislation” isn’t real. Oh, and to suggest that many “females” can’t think rationally.
Geigerwasright concludes that men will find sexbots preferable to women because the women of today aren’t providing them with “love, loyalty [or] kindness.”
So watch out, ladies! Unless you clean up your act, and quick, the good men of the Men’s Rights subreddit will abandon you en masse in favor of sex with inanimate objects that pretend to like them.
And this is apparently supposed to be a bad thing for women.
Clauderoughly postulates that sexbots for women will never be that popular, because what women really want is to get pregnant, so they can live the good life off of child support:
That’s a bit weird, as all the women I’ve had sex with have seemed quite interested not getting pregnant from sex. Indeed, some have had devices inserted into their bodies by doctors to prevent such an occurence.
The world that MRAs live in is a strange and scary place. I prefer the real world. It’s much cheerier.
NOTE: The horrible picture at the top of this post was borrowed from Craftastrophe.
Ooh, have fun Kittehs’!
Have fun kitteh!
And idk, maybe Demarcq does just remind me of ALL THE SEXBOT TROLLS because I can’t place it.
I love London. London, Toronto and San Francisco are my 3 favorite cities. I felt totally at home in them all (okay maybe not in the Tenderloin in SF that one time, but you get the idea). I know they’re totally cheesy but I’m a big fan of ghost tours while on vacation. I went on one in Scotland that scared me shitless, and one in New Orleans while a thunderstorm was going on that was awesome. London must have some great ghosts. We heard a number of ghost stories at the Tower, but we were there in the middle of the day.
I had a shitty day, I’m going to go watch Jeremy Renner kill people while I eat chocolate.
I have a picture of it probably, I took pictures of every single thing and wall and stone and everything in there.
I am tempted to do two tours of ghostown while there but maybe not, I have to think of the other person.
drst, I am sorry about your shitty day and I endorse your recovery program.
For our birthday, Sneak’s carting us out to a trampoline park and throwing a party. Normally, I prefer to ignore all holidays, because they give me gripe, but I have to admit, the trampoline park does sound pretty fun.
Also, demarcq really doesn’t understand how humans, or robots, or programming works. Studs aren’t called studs for LISTENING.
@LBT yeah, they are vertical and hold up walls panels, that’s why they’re studs and not dwangs. 😉
princessbonbon, this is the pic:
or if that link doesn’t work, try this one: http://s229.beta.photobucket.com/user/LouisLouise/media/LouisbyEgmont_zpscfc17cc1.jpg.html
War Horse was superb! I enjoyed the film but it was dripping with Spielberg sentiment, and the play wasn’t. It was spare, no sets, but wonderful lighting and sound effects for the Somme scenes. And the horse puppets were amazing.
Oh, and Simpson’s in the Strand is a restaurant famous since about 1850 for its roast beef.
Kitteh — embedding pics doesn’t work, and that’s probably a good thing given at least one troll was banned/perma-modded after posting graphic? Bloody? images, not sure as I only saw it after David censored it, but yeah, we don’t want the assholes pulling that.
In cheerier things, is that Louis in mismatched breeches? stockings? Why is one striped and one leather or similar? (Nice stripes!)
Ah, just as well indeed!
Yes, that’s Louis (the pic in the Tower Armouries, who have a few of his guns on display – he was the first serious collector in the world, or at least the Western world). The leather is the top of his boot, and the stripes are the boot-stocking – the other boot leg is folded down, showing the red lining in the full pic.
@Kitteh: the play sounds great. I’m avoiding the movie because it’s a war movie and also I particularly hate seeing anything where animals get hurt/killed.
So do I, Kiwi girl. It isn’t too graphic in the film, iirc (Mum wants to watch it again tonight to compare with the play!). The way they staged it was even more effective, though. Things like riders being killed in a charge were represented by the actors simply being carried off in a standing position as if they were floating backward from the horses. There was no attempt to hide the people carrying them, but it got the message across every bit as gut-wrenchingly as a “naturalistic” film version could.
“Can we put him in another fucking cell, please!” OMG, love the videos! Thanks for the laughs!
I am continually confused by the way some MRAs talk about these things in public as though their ideas are in any way in accordance with reality.
Ah, but they haven’t the self-awareness to know their fantasies are just that.
Oh? And why is that? *raises eyebrow*
Well duh…..But if these robots are sentient then they can also listen to, talk with, and understand the mind of their partners. Why not have a robot than can relate to you as well as being good in bed?
But I wouldn’t worry too much about this as machine sentience is still pretty far off(not possible with current computer technology) and sexbots are still quite primitive and aren’t able to emulate many of the movements the human body is capable of. They also very lifelike to the touch.
I put my hand up for programming said sexbots as I don’t think the mind of an MRA is that hard to understand, and I will be able to efficiently code the talk/behaviour trees.
Dude, the sexbot isn’t going to *relate* to you. The sexbot will be as good as its programming. But its all just code, in response to stimulus.
Also, I don’t think you actually want sentience. Sentience means that the sexbot will be self-aware, capable of learning by itself, developing its code. It may develop ways that you won’t like. In which case, you’ll want it reprogrammed back to the way it was – and that is an ethical issue because of its sentience.
I don’t think these guys understand what words like “relate”, “relationship”, and “understand” mean in a context in which women are considered people.
The one aspect of all of this that makes me nervous is that their idea of the perfect sexrobot comes very close to a lobotomized woman.
I’m none too sure these guys know what the word people means, or sentience, for that matter. We can see they don’t think women are people, but I wonder how much they treat other men as people in daily life, too.
I just saw this, MorkaIsChosen – I’m from Yorkshire too 😀 I currently live on the South coast, my mum and sister are constantly accusing me of ‘going soft’.
Heh, not getting any of that – though my accent’s shifting a touch…
If visiting the NHM, see if it’s possible to go and see the giant squid. There’s a giant squid in a tank.
