So, “Nice Guys” are causing a stir on the Internet again, thanks largely to a new(ish) Tumblr blog called “Nice Guys” of Ok Cupid, which posts selected highlights from the OKCupid profiles of self-proclaimed “nice guys” who make it very clear, in their profiles and in their answers to OKCupid’s “match” questions, that they are in fact anything but nice.
Some of them are actual or potential date rapists, convinced that women that they’re “nice” to owe them sex. Others are bitter from too many rejections, and launch long tirades in their profiles about how women are bitches and whores. Still others are clueless on a more fundamental level, declaring that women have “an obligation to shave their legs” and otherwise prettify themselves for men while noting that they themselves only shower or brush their teeth occasionally.
It’s not clear how any of this is supposed to convince the women of OKCupid that these angry, ranting, hapless-yet-entitled “nice guys” are indeed as “nice” as advertised, much less convince any rational human being to have sex with them.
The site is a goldmine of unintentional self-revelation — as is a similar site with the name of, er, OKCupid Goldmine — and I’ve spent hours looking through the pictures on both sites and discussing them with friends. The only reason I haven’t linked to it in the past is that neither of them blur out the faces of the people they feature, which seems to me a pretty major invasion of privacy. (As you no doubt have noticed, I’ve taken the liberty of somewhat creeepily disguising the faces of the guys in the pics I’m posting here.) But “Nice Guys of OKCupid has been pretty widely discussed, linked to by Jezebel (1, 2) and The Guardian and even the Men’s Rights subreddit, to mention merely a few examples; Ok Cupid Goldmine is also provoking discussions. Posts on both sites regularly get dozens if not hundreds of comments and reblogs on Tumblr. The cat’s already out of the bag.

Non-spanish are things like polish,and czech, which I can get the gist of, when I hear them, but can’t read, because they don’t use the spanish alphabet.
I think what amuses me most about the trollish types like Diogenes, is the uttter lack of curiosity. They know what they think they know, and that all which matters. All the other things going on, or the subtle digs meant to spark them to an interactive response… might as well be not happening. It’s the flip side of the people who look in, see people talking about cats, or music, or cooking, or spinning, or… and go, “You don’t talk about, IMPORTANT SHIT!, you are all wankers”.
Hit a Diogenes, or a steele upside the head with an interesting digression, and it sails right past them (Al actually tried to take part in some digressions, but the argle-bargle would come back. I think it was that, which had me holding out hope for so long as I did). They are only interested in a digression if they introduce it. When they do, however, the conversation has to move on their terms (see “Voynich Manuscript” and “Terms of Debate”), or they lose all interest.
I’ve learned a lot from the discursive sidetalk, and that’s part of why I come here. The level of interpersonal activity people engage in here is huge. The “trolls’ don’t bother to engage in any.
Naïf would argue he does, but he’s so tone deaf to the actual threads of things that he doesn’t. He makes declarative statements; ofttime pulled from his ass, and then gets sulky when people point it out.
It would be better for him to find a venue with more people, and fewer adults.
It’s not because he’s an obnoxious wanker that I think he should be banned, it’s because he’s not engaging in an honest way. Trolls who actually believe the crap that they spout are fun to kick around, but I don’t see the point of allowing the ones who’re out for the lulz to use this as a platform to jerk off on.
Ah, makes sense that Polish and Czech would have similar roots as Romanian, they are all kind of up in each other’s business geographically.

Argenti: Wow…. that’s a great xkcd. Having been sick for much of the past month (flu, then a cold,which has blocked my ear), I feel his pain.
Wost thing, I can’t really play the penny whistle, and music is, by and large, a bit less than it should be (many of the subtle note are lost, as is a fair bit of the more delicate harmonics), so I did much of the feast without Christmas Carols. 🙁

You forgot about how he’s claiming we can’t demand answers, it’s his right to drop any subject. Well ok, but likewise it’s our right(s) to prod for answers.

It’s still plugged. I’d say I have about 50 percent hearing, but now it’s a sort of soft pressure. It’s no longer uncomfortable, just a bit annoying. Up until yesterday it was like someone was stuffing a finger all the way up my ear, and sometimes it would wiggle.
It hurt. Now it’s just sort of there, and “wrong”.
As to the sucking up… it’s the way it is in all oppressive regimes, some of the victims of the tyranny will collaborate, in the hope of not being treated like the scum they are.
And it’s white men being oppressed? Interesting… [insert pensive chin stroke here]

Well, they all have common roots in Latin, but Romanian is actually quite markedly different from Slavic languages like Polish and Czech – it’s much closer to Romance languages like Italian, Spanish and French.
But the thing about Slavic languages is that although they look dauntingly impenetrable at first, their spelling and orthography is one hell of a lot more phonetically consistent than French or indeed English. So once you’ve got your head around Polish and Czech spelling (and Slovak, Croatian and other Slavic languages that use a variant of the Roman alphabet), you should at least know in theory how to pronounce every single word that you encounter.
Of course, challenge number two is actually getting your tongue around all the consecutive consonants, but that’s a different matter entirely. Even everyday expressions like the Polish ‘przepraszam’ (‘excuse me’/’pardon’) can be perilous.
(Incidentally, talking of getting your tongue around things, I’m gutted that I missed Diogenes making his sweeping statement about cunnilingus at the time – that has to be one of the silliest and most demonstrably wrongheaded comments I’ve seen here since Owly’s heyday. Was he trolling deliberately, or does he actually believe it?)
The thing about the spanish alphabet is that it maps. Polish maps, Croatian maps, Czech maps, but each of them is mapping much the same territory with different tools.
I can read Serbian, and, insomuch as I can speak it, I can speak croation. But I can’t read it.
gah… wasn’t done. The “map” for Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, etc. is close enough, one to the other, that small changes, e.g. those for French, or German, are enough to make it fairly simple for me to move from one to the other. This is not the case with the latin-based slavic orthographies.
But that’s just me being a wimp, and a bird of little brain.
