Newtown shooting discussion thread: No flames, no trolls, no MRAs

Because the post I just put up on the Newtown shooting is so troubling and disturbing, I am setting up this separate thread so people can discuss the shooting without having to deal with or think about MRAs.

Thanks. It’s just so terrible. And it appears that the shooter was the son of one of the teachers he killed? It’s heartbreaking.

The response seems to be a bit more muted with the usual “they want to take our guns away!!!eleventy!!!” when a mention of possible gun control is made. I guess something like this even gives them pause. :/

This is a horrible situation, and my heart goes out to everyone in Newton.

Let’s talk about guns. You guys know that there have been a rash of knife attacks against children at schools in China, right? I think they’re up to 7 incidents, with a total of 21 people (including children) killed. That’s an average of 3 per attack. In one single incident today, at least 27 people are dead.

Guns are just way too easy to get in this country.

CNN says the weapons were two pistols (a Glock and a Sig-Sauer) and a Bushmaster rifle in .223.

FAR too easy to get in this country.

The screaming anytime anyone (especially a foreigner) criticises the US gun culture is something to behold. Do the lobbysists and NRA types really think the price is worth paying?

I’ve just woken up to this news, it’s heart breaking. many hugs to all those who need them.

I can’t link to the clip from my tablet but Bill Hicks’ riff on gun control comes to my mind. he draws a comparison between low gun crime in the UK and tough gun laws, and gun crime in the US with weak gun laws. He then comments that you would called a liar and a communist to suggest the two were linked.

It’s cold comfort, and I still have tears in my eyes.

Hugs.

BigMomma – were you here when the Port Arthur murders happened? The gun lobby threw a shitfit over the tighter controls Howard brought in after that. Only thing he did I admired. But there wasn’t the huge uphill battle here that the US has, with so many people practically worshipping the rotten things. 🙁

Yes actually they do.

no, I came over in 2007. In the same year (1996) there was a shooting in a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. Shortly thereafter, private ownership of handguns became effectively illegal. I don’t think gun ownership in the UK is as deeply entwined with the notion of individual freedoms..

The Onion has written what I think is quite a sweet piece on this:

Report: It’s Okay To Spend Rest Of Day Curled In Fetal Position Under Desk WASHINGTON—Following reports of a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left 20 children dead, sources just confirmed that it is totally fine to spend the entire rest of today curled up in the fetal position underneath your desk. Early reports also indicated that sitting on the floor while holding your knees to your chest and slowly rocking back and forth is not only acceptable, but, sources said, absolutely understandable. According to officials, it is furthermore fully okay should you want to simply stare at nothing in particular for several minutes in total silence, get under the covers of your bed and bury your face in a pillow, or weep uncontrollably with your head in your hands. At press time, sources reported that you should also feel free to call your loved ones at some point in the day, if you think that will help.

I remember the Dunblane massacre. 🙁

Yes, the US thing seems so tied up with the whole Second Amendment, or misreadings of it, if I’m understanding it right. We don’t have that sort of gun culture either, though there are idiots in our gun lobby who try to ape it.

My brother was in tassie when the port Arthur massacre took place. It shook everyone up and even our thug pm of the time realised guns had to be restricted and put govt money where his mouth was to do it. In the states I read comments now that what they need are armed teachers and kids. arghhh!

This is too awful.

But… How? How can you turn a gun on a child and pull the trigger? And then keep shooting? How?

Why?

And why will we see it happen again?

My sister lives in CT, and she posted something on FB about how distressed she is. And my idiot cousin-in-law has decided this is the right time to comment on her page about how TERRIBLE GUN CONTROL LAWS ARE. The Onion is so right: “I’m sorry, but I can’t fucking do this. Can you? Can anyone?”

If you want to keep your sanity and any respect for the human race do not go to any of the right wing sites. The comments make me hang my head in shame.

My heart hurts. I keep finding tears rolling down my face and I can’t make them stop.

Everywhere, every day, children, men and women are dying violently and for what?

No reason, no purpose… I don’t even want to try to understand. I just want it to stop.
