When you spend as much time as we do here at Man Boobz scrutinizing the Men’s Rights movement, it’s easy to forget what a fringe phenomenon it is. So here are some charts from Google Trends – charting the frequency of certain search terms from 2004 until today — that help to put it all in perspective. (Thanks to Katz, Cloudiah and Cthulhu’s Intern in the comments for inspiring this post.)
That “rapidly growing” Men’s Rights movement that MRAs like to talk about? It may actually be stagnant or even shrinking, if searches for “men’s rights” are any indication. Despite a recent comeback, they’re still less than half of what they were at their height in 2004.
Now let’s put that in perspective.
No, there’s nothing wrong with that graph; it’s just that My Little Pony is so much more popular than Men’s Rights that the latter simply vanishes into the X axis.
But this graph is my favorite:
Well, nothing will top that, but here’s a graph showing that people are a lot more concerned about misogyny than misandry — and, I would add, for good reason.
Let’s see what other trends we can find!
(Oh, and sorry about the low quality pics; WordPress won’t let me embed the charts.)
I just saw Ran the other day. Incredible film, and the first film I’ve seen in color by Kurosawa. In Edo-period Japan they were not wearing suits. The British didn’t come in and burn all their robes.
That type of influence I would call a culture war.
cloudiah wins the thread.
What about Nehru suits? WHO WON THE SUIT WAR OF 1968?
Nope, Matthew Perry came in and shelled their civilians until they signed an unequal trade treaty.
Hold up though, were you watching Kurosawa because the Japanese government burn your American DVDs?
CLEARLY JAPAN HAS WON A CULTURAL WAR.
Ugh, to me it means the utter domination of one way of thinking, or doing things to the marginalization of all other ways. Like my previous example. Radians versus degrees.
I’ll also add that Ptolemy decided that maps face North, and the rest of the world was all like “um, ok.”
Oh yeah, and all music is written in 16th century Italian. I found this out after asking an Israeli if the music written in Israel read right-to-left.
lol, nah. I’m a fan of Akira Kurosawa.
More importantly, why are we arguing about which culture is superior*? Why are we allowing Diogynes to turn this into The Diogynes show?
*Even if we were playing that game it would be silly to discount the possibility that the one that won might just be the one that was most ruthless. I don’t consider “ruthless” to be a positive quality.
And your example of this is… suits?
Hahaha.

What an asinine statement that is…
CassandraSays, you make a good point, I should probably start.
From my end, it’s fun just to see the little gems of pure ignorance DtC keeps throwing out.
The whole “we’re better because we used cannons to oppress more people” thing will keep me chuckling for a week, and now we have this notation thing.
*stop
Amplification is teh evol? I had no idea.
CassandraSays, I agree. Apart from anything else, the Diogenes Show is so boring it makes ad breaks welcome.
Here’s a mama cat getting her kitten down from a tree.

And once again Grumbles shows his complete ignorance of humour. Gods, the trolls these days …
Of course you are.
Key signatures, barlines, and time signatures are also employed. Many symbols from Western standard notation, such as bar lines, time signatures, accidentals, tie and slur, and the expression markings are also used.
Thats from your link.
Now, take noodles from China, tomatoes from the New World, and throw them into Italy, and you’ll end up with authentic Italian cooking!

Who else has no idea what Diogenes is trying to argue anymore?
Shut up, DiogenestheInsipid. No one cares.
Italians already had noodles before Marco Polo supposedly brought them back from China.
I think someone’s had enough attention.
Katz – not me, that’s for sure. Not that he ever has much of a point to make anyway, other than to show arglebargleBUTIMAPHILOSOPHERINMENSA anyway.
Meanwhile, puppy vs penguin:

I think he’s arguing that he has the ability to regurgitate random information. How fascinating and unique!
Bored now.
Katz, look up how things are done. Everything. The calender, names of the days of the week, position of the international dateline. Any time you see an example of something that’s universal, you will see that that is an example of a cultural war that one side won.
