Let me second Cloudia in the comments, and say that I hope all East Coast Manboobzers (and their loved ones, and everyone else in the area) is safe and sound and braced for Sandy.
East coasters, use the comments below to check in and let us know how you are! The rest of you, discuss!
I’m still in Ohio. It’s worse, actually, than if we’d made it home. I have no idea what happened at our place. I have no way to help. I can’t do anything, and no idea what it’s going to be like to get home (JFK to New Jersey). Friends who decided to drive back… they are in Penn somewhere, doing alright. Now sure what the residual storm will do to travel plans.
Oh, and as to the Bounty… I know one of the people who was rescued. Sad day all around.
For an idea of what it was/is like.

I wish I was home.
@Rahu: we’ll probably see some flooding. Just canceled a meeting where I’d have to do a lot of driving tomorrow… feeling pretty good about that.
Good luck getting home pecunium, and I hope your property/family/friends are okay.
Where I am it is quiet now – overcast, but no rain since this morning and no wind. Lots of closed roads due to downed trees and wires.
We are up enough/inland enough that I think the surge wasn’t a problem. Secondary flooding… who knows. Wind damage? Who knows. I’ll try to email neighbors, but we know that the area has lost power (one of our party stopped being able to remote to his computer). Don’t know if it affected our place.
Good luck to all who went through the storm, and now face sorting through the aftermath. My sister was stranded safely here with us in CA, but her husband has reported in from CT and while they have a bunch of downed tree limbs they have no major damage. And my friend on Long Island is also okay, but no electricity for the foreseeable future. She and her family might go join my b-in-l once the roads are passable.
Apparently the storm also devastated Haiti on its way here (quite soon after Isaac, too) — so if you’re able, you might consider making a donation to organizations that are helping all over the Caribbean.
@howardbann1ster – good decision. 🙂
@Polliwog –
This is very late, sorry, but I just saw the Joss Whedon vid you posted – I LOVE IT – THANK YOU!!!!
Sincerely,
A Total Whedonite
reports from home… no apparent damage to the house.
Yay! My parents in DC didn’t suffer any flooding or house damage. I am relieved.
Now just waiting to hear back from my ex who recently moved back to NYC from Belgium…
and yay, she’s all right!
Glad the East coasters here escaped major damage! The East coast Futrelles are all fine, including my sister in Manhattan. (While big chunks of NYC are underwater, other parts were relatively unscathed.)
What a gigantic mess. Cleanup is going to take a long time.
Question for anyone who knows people who’re in Manhattan – how are the people who live in tall buildings doing? I’ve been wondering what would happen to them if the lower floors flooded, since they’d presumably be safe on the higher floors but not necessarily able to leave the building?
Cassandra,
Powers out. I can’t get in contact with my NY peeps. Cell phones are spotty, and are only being kept on at intervals to preserve their juice.
I’ve found out my friend who lives in Ontario is okay, which is a relief. Don’t know about those in Maine and Pennsylvania yet. Glad to hear from all of you who’re safe!
Not unless they can swim I would think Cassandra although I have no idea how fast the flooding will recede from the streets and subways of NY.
For those who need a smile Henri The Cat on All Hallow’s Eve.

Just heard that a friend’s Red Hook apartment sustained severe water damage and will be uninhabitable for the near future. She and her family had evacuated so they’re safe, and they have temporary shelter, but they lost lots of irreplaceable stuff like photos and artwork (mostly their own). o_o
Henri is one pissed-off looking kitteh …
Cloudiah, that’s rotten about your friend’s home. Reminds me of what someone who survived both fire and flood here said – that they’d take the fire over the flood, because of the irreparable, ongoing damage done by rot, mold and the like after a flood, and the sheer stench of the mud. (I presume they didn’t lose their house outright in the fires.)
Aw, I love Henri, especially since my current kitty is a tuxedo.
Taking advantage of open thread to admit that I am very tempted to create a Reddit account so that I can post this r/mr, make popcorn, and watch the ensuing shitstorm. What the LA Times unsurprising doesn’t cover in their story is that the woman-only night is also open to trans folks, which is cool.
@cloudiah: how dare they! Talking about bicycles and mechanics and other everyday things, knowing all the time that they have ladybits! They should leave the care and maintenance of the penny-farthing to their fathers and/or husbands! /snark
Oh god, I also see from that LA Times story that The Mouse is set to buy out Darth Lucas for $4 BILLION.
Looking forward to another round of Star Wars movies because Disney has to make their investment work! Although if they actually had a good plot and dialogue that wasn’t terrible ….
Star Wars 10 – The Return of Minnie?
Personally, the only way I’d ever watch a new Star Wars movie is if it was made by someone other than George Lucas. Anything The Mouse does with the franchise can’t possibly be worse than Attack of the Clones.
Anyway, everyone rent their garments and beat their chests when Disney bought Marvel, and then we got The Avengers. So I’m staying optimistic.
