@ Amused: Don’t beat yourself up over it. You offered; they turned you down because of a ‘liberal conspiracy’. While you hope nothing happens to them, perhaps Sandy should give them a little scare. Maybe next time, they’ll take you up on your offer.

@Amused: Oh, that’s horrible. I hope they come through the storm wiser but essentially unharmed, but I really really doubt that they’ll manage both.

It is looking pretty horrible at this point. I am so grateful that huge bits of it sheered off to the East, but what is left is gynormous.

@ Amused – yeah, that’s awful. Hope they come out of it okay.

Sorry, I don’t know how to upload pics directly to the thread. :/ But, it’s a pic of my kitteh Venger. He also wishes that everyone in Sandy’s path stay safe. 🙂

@Alex – Kya, Katara, Toph, Mai, Suki, Korra, Asami (all from “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Legend of Korra.” I’ve named all 3 of my most recent fish after the boys 🙂

Things did go dark for a bit, but back for now.
Thanks for the ideas! I like Janeway, Kira, and maybe a shortened version of Pangur Ban…I’ll have to try them out with her and see what works. If anyone thinks of another let me know.
Stay safe!

Oh, and drst didn’t see your post before I posted, but thanks for those. I like Kya and Korra, I had forgotten about that one. I’ll add that to the list of names to try.

I always liked Amara-so much so I named my dog that.

@Alex, I know no one likes the prequels, but Padme is a nice name, easy to spell and pronounce, and instantly recognizable as a geeky name.

I was going to suggest Talia (Holderkin) from Arrows of the Queen but apparently that is the name of some comic book character.

Hey, it’s a handy reward system for those of you doing NaNoWriMo (or just needing to force yourself to write). Write 100 words (you set the amount), and you get a kitten!

@ cloudiah: That is the best thing ever. I should use this system. 🙂

Ahhh, the big storm. I’m going to make a prediction. Almost too easy, really. After the storm is over let’s count the stories about how it affected women. How women reacted. How women were injured. How women suffered. What women need. What women lost. How women are helping the community. What the government can do to help women.

In the context of the mass media, men simply won’t matter or come into relevance at all. Any wagers on who the mass media will focus on? Right now Mitt and Barry are salivating. Every other word out of their mouths will be women. Women will be the sole focus of this storm. No point in letting a good natural disaster go to waste. Hell. We might even get another permanent agency outta this.

The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Cloudiah, I just typed a hundred words of drivel about cats to see my kitten! 😀

Hey what up errybody. Sorry for the absence.

I hear there’s a hurricane but the Boston area seems to be getting away with just a few downed trees.

I have a friend who lives in Newport News, VA. She said earlier that her street was flooding pretty bad. Luckily, she and her family are all right. That was this afternoon, so who knows how much more water they’ve taken on since.

The Kittehs' Unpaid Help

Holy shit, that’s a terrifying scene.

We don’t need to wait to test that prediction! Thanks to the advances in modern media, there are stories about the storm coming in right now!

Here are the updates on CNN so far today which mention victims or witnesses whose gender can be identified:

[Update at 8:09 p.m.] A male was killed by a falling tree in Queens, a borough of New York City, fire department spokesman Frank Dwyer said. The 30-year-old man was inside his house when the tree fell on him, said New York police spokesman John Grimpel.

[Updated at 6:59 p.m.] About 75 miles south in Atlantic City, Montgomery Dahm said there was flooding next to the convention center and up to the steps of his restaurant, Tun Tavern.

“I’ve been down here for about 16 years, and it’s shocking what I’m looking at now,” Dahm told CNN. “It’s unbelievable. I mean, there are cars that are just completely underwater in some of the places I would never believe that there would be water.”

[Updated at 6:26 p.m.] Claudene Christian, one of two missing people from the HMS Bounty, has been found dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The ship sank off the North Carolina coast earlier Monday, and 14 crew members were subsequently rescued. The Coast Guard is still looking for 63-year-old Robin Walbridge, the ship’s captain.

[Update 5:36 a.m. ET] As Hurricane Sandy closes in on the Northeast, residents are scrambling to prepare. Amy Mueller Campbell told CNN affiliate WMUR she had to drive almost 30 miles – from Nottingham, New Hampshire, to Manchester, New Hampshire – just to find a five-gallon gasoline container. She’ll use it to get fuel to power her home generator.

So…reports on two men and two women, plus the still-missing Bounty captain (and I can’t tell from the name whether that person is male or female). None of the other updates, the ones dealing with groups of people or the larger scope of the disaster, mention gender in any way.

With its updates, CNN has been running Twitter posts from people on the scene. So far today, it’s run ten Tweets from men, three from women, and ten from organizations or individuals not identified by gender.

Damn, brother. There are men in that storm suffering real threats to life and limb. You don’t have to make up imaginary problems for them.

I’m in Manhattan and watching the local news (and NY1 just stopped broadcasting), but my boss who’s across the East River in Queens told me that there were two massive explosions in southern Manhattan that lit up the sky – I’m not seeing anything about them on the local news – anyone know what happened?

Alright Owly, I’ll take that bet. The loser has to admit they were wrong in front of all of Manboobz. Deal?
