Imaginary feminists shut down debate with other imaginary feminists (allegedly) [UPDATE 2]

UPDATE: In a new post on his blog, Marshall explains what (he says) actually happened. See below for details.

UPDATE 2: AVFM says “Oops!” (See end of post.)

I just hope none of you were planning on attending the Great Vancouver All-MRA Debate on whether or not feminism has “gone too far.” Because the already strange story of this debate has taken an even stranger turn, which seems to involve a large degree of blatant lying from someone, or a bunch of someones, connected to the debate. Which, by the way, isn’t going to be happening, at least not any time soon.

A Voice for Men yesterday announced that the much ballyhooed debate would be “delayed due to outside interference.” The announcement told a dramatic tale:

Chris Marshall, a father’s rights activist and the manager of a Vancouver business where a scheduled debate addressing the question, “Has feminism gone too far?” reported that he has just been fired from his job, and escorted from the premises by Vancouver Police after 30 months of employment. The timing of Mr Marshal’s ejection comes 48 hours prior to that scheduled event.

Well, if Mr. Marshall’s alleged firing and the alleged visit from the police were indeed connected to his political activity, I guess you could call that “outside interference.”

But there is just one little problem with this story. On his blog, Chris Marshall claims to be the owner or co-owner of the car dealership that was going to hold the debate. Indeed, in one post he told this story of how his car lot came to be:

Three years ago I met a white guy named Robert Cortens. (another divorced dad) I told him my story and he said he wanted to lend me $250,000 to open up a car lot that we called CC Motors. We started with 80 cars and are now up to 200 cars in inventory.

We built this dealership with morals scruples and ethics and the concept that a good deal is when we are both happy. We now sell over 100 cars a month, most dealers sell 35 cars. We are now Vancouverʼs largest and most successful used car dealership.

So either he fired himself, and demanded that the police escort him off his own property, or someone is lying.

There are really only a couple of possibilities I can see, given the conflicting evidence out there:

1) Marshall is lying on his blog about owning or co-owning the lot – which seems unlikely, because he’s posted pictures of the lot festooned by banners and signs promoting his website and denouncing the “Lying Legal Horror Lawyers” that Marshall says are “using my son as a pawn for judicial extortion.”  You’d be hard pressed to find a car dealer who would let an employee, even a manager, put banners like this on his business. I think he must really be the owner or co-owner. [Edited to add: Also, as of 9/22/2012, the car dealership’s web page prominently promotes Marshall’s website; indeed, the biggest graphic on the page is not a picture of a car but of one of his father’s rights banners, and the link to his blog is in a bigger typeface than the link to the inventory of the dealership’s cars.]

2) Marshall wasn’t fired. He simply lied to the folks at AVFM about what happened, and they were stupid enough to believe him.

3) The AVFM dudes, realizing that no one was going to show up to watch MRAs debate themselves, have decided to cover up their own organizing ineptitude by simply making up this story, which, as usual, allows them to play the victim once again. They assumed that the MRA masses, both on AVFM or elsewhere, wouldn’t bother to fact check their story and would simply swallow it whole.

4) Marshall had some sort of falling-out with the co-owner of his business, and his removal from the property had something to do with that; AVFM simply took the opportunity to “delay” the debate and to insinuate with no proof that evil feminists were somehow behind it all.

[UPDATE: Apparently #4 is the correct answer. In a new post on his blog, Marshall explains his side of the story:

First, the investor in my  business CC Motors has take away my signing authority and the profits I have created for CC Motors. I have also been banned from the business I built from nothing to a success. I refused to make him a partner in the car business. He is no longer satisfied with the $48,000 a year he get’s for lending me $160,000.

Huh. No mention of feminists complaining about the debate. ]

AVFM seems to have gotten away with their insinuations once again. It goes without saying that the sycophants on AVFM bought the story. On Reddit, while a few commenters in the inevitable r/mensrights thread raised questions about AVFM’s nonsensical tale, most accepted it unquestioningly and  worked themselves into quite a tizzy about the terrible injustice of it all. A couple typical comments from the thread (click on the pics to see the quotes in context):

So if it is AVFM who is lying here, I suppose I should give them credit for another victory of their propaganda over the stubborn world of facts. Not that long ago, you may recall, they got away with claiming a mob of twenty or thirty people “wielding box cutters” had confronted JohnTheOther while postering in Vancouver, when JTO’s own video footage showed only a tiny handful of people taking down his posters. Meanwhile, the AVFMers keep insinuating that feminists shut down the original version of this debate, when according to the original organizer MRAs were at least partially (if not wholly) responsible. And now this.

Actually, even if somehow, magically, everyone is telling the truth about the events surrounding Mr. Marshall, it’s not clear why the debate would have to be “delayed.”  Despite the setback, most organizers would have just moved the event to a new location.  (It certainly wouldn’t be that hard to find a place. Given how many people would likely have shown up, they could probably hold it in a studio apartment, or a large shoe.)

Of all the stumbling blocks that might get in the way of this debate, I would think that the lack of an opposing side would have been a much more serious one – as the announcement notes in passing, no feminists have stepped forward to debate the AVFM crowd, Vancouver Division. Debating an imaginary opponent? Not a problem. Changing location? Impossible.

On AVFM, the person writing the announcement lets us know that Mr. Elam has been informed of the dastardly attack on free speech.

Paul Elam, when informed of these events remarked:

“Those who believe open discussion can be silenced by intimidation, and who may be patting themselves on the back should all be invited to attend the rescheduled debate which will be announced shortly on this site.”

Very slick, Paul, working a plug for a new debate into your entirely spontaneous response to Mr. Marshall’s alleged firing.

Oh, and the new debate, if it ever comes to fruition, will be based on a slightly different question. As the announcement explains:

[I]n light on the resistance among gender ideologues, and the established pattern of censorship, intimidation and threats against the original organizer, a revised premise for the debate is now under consideration.

“Is feminism a hate movement?”

This debate is never going to happen, is it? I wonder what they’ll blame next time. Feminist caribou?

EDITED TO ADD: The fellas at AVFM have now run a … I don’t know, but it looks sort of like a correction of some kind, atop their original post:

I guess it would be too much to expect them to offer an apology of sorts for all the imaginary feminists they pointed their giant A Voice for Men Foam Finger of Insinuation at in the original post.

Ok, seriously. Cutting the bullshit for a minute.

Why would the MRA’s back out on this? They’ve been chomping at the bit for a debate at an open forum. Theyved wanted this badly for a long time now. Why would some guy who wanted to host it intentionally get himself fired just to dodge? Making a scene about getting fired wouldn’t have near the same effect as taking on their detractors in front of the public. They know this, you all know this.

It isn’t the first time that feminists have engaged in dirty pool to shut up dissent. Did anyone read the comments on the facebook event page? It wasn’t MRA’s trying to shout it down. It wasn’t even MRA’s that got the first one cancelled (and they posted proof of it, even after the original host went to Jezebel and the immediately tried to backpedal.)

Just look at all the damage control here and on r/againstmensrights (where manboobz also posts). It doesn’t take a conspiracy theorist to know that something is up.

Oh, god, telephones… apparently I sound absolutely terrified when I answer the phone. I’m better at making calls than receiving them though.

To read his website, apparently justices in Canada are empowered to randomly fine fathers over a thousand dollars for no reason at all. Yeah, I’m totally sure he’s giving the whole story.

So Marshall’s investor is an agent of the femistasi? Or what?

There is some stuff in the psych assessment that can help explain why he has had difficulty resolving these issues. Between it and the CC Motors reviews, the way he treats his customers, the psychologist’s comments about his degree of self-insight; I wonder how much of the MRA fathers’ rights movement stems from these and similar issues going unaddressed.

“Why would the MRA’s back out on this?” It looks like it all went to hell because of this guy’s personal issues; I think it was out of their hands.

What damage control are you talking about? Mocking MRAs = covering up a conspiracy?

Maybe the debate fell apart because these guys are narcissistic, disorganized fuck ups who couldn’t coordinate a game of hopscotch.

If Marshall actually was fired, I’m going to guess that the firing and the arrest probably have something to do with each other (ie. either he was fired because of whatever lead to him being arrested, or he was arrested because he did something illegal and the co-owner called the cops). Given that the co-owner was friendly enough towards father’s rights ideas to allow Marshall to festoon the place with banners, he’s pretty clearly not a part of the alleged conspiracy of feminist cops and feminist caribou. Father’s rights friendly doesn’t always mean full on MRA, though (there are plenty of problems within the father’s rights movement all on its own, but not all of those guys identify as MRA), so it’s possible that the co-owner was cool with the father’s rights stuff but balked at being associated with Elam & co. Maybe he saw JtOs video and decided that someone who sees a couple of hipsters tearing down posters as a knife-wielding mob wasn’t someone he wanted to be buddies with. Who knows. Certainly Elam doesn’t know, as disingenuous as he’s being about the whole thing.

Given the reviews that the dealership has, and how many of them call Marshall out by name, it occurs to me that his arrest could be in some way related to ripping off a customer. Can you be arrested for selling someone a car that isn’t safe to drive? Resident Canucks may know the answer to this.

@ Fembot

About the indoor cats and worrying about them in the event of a fire, there’s actually a sticker you can get to put on your doors/windows to alert the fire department that there are pets inside that need to be rescued in the event of a fire. Most firemen are happy to do it, they just need to know that the pets are there so that they know to look for them. You can get the stickers for free from the ASPCA.

@Fembot we upgraded our home security system and put in remote monitored fire alarms, which look like the ones you see in hotels. They are monitored around the clock, regardless of whether or not the security system is set. Our security monitoring service knows we have indoor cats. We are also aware that our cats can break the cat door open, if it is locked.

Considering they still haven’t managed to get together in person for something as simple as a few beers and companionable conversation, I’m going with this option.

Why would some guy who wanted to host it intentionally get himself fired just to dodge?

He wouldn’t. No one here thinks Chris got himself ejected from his own car lot just to get out of that debate he was so totally winning. He had so much stuff going on that something was bound to get inconvenienced when the cops showed up. The poor debate was just a victim of circumstance.

Unrelated, I can see how one difficult person can keep something in the courts that long. If his ex-wife is difficult as well, then they could hit 10 years standing on their heads. But let’s assume she’s just stuck defending herself every time Marshall decides to try another tactic. I once served on a jury that involved a dispute over a small plane. Two guys hatched a plot to get the plane declared unairworthy and force the original owners to refund part or all of the sale money. The whole thing hinged on a very minor technical detail about an insulating adhesive in the bulkhead between the engine and the cabin. It was complete bullshit, and these two guys were not exactly master con artists. Still, they managed to keep this couple in and out of mediation and courts for 8 years. All you need is to be a stubborn jackass. And it helps the pocketbook if you’re representing yourself.

“We are also aware that our cats can break the cat door open, if it is locked.”

Then how do you keep them from escaping? Do they have no interest in going outdoors? My cats pushed a screen off the window and jumped outside a few weeks ago and sometimes they bum rush the door if we don’t close it quickly.

@Fembot, it happened once when the currently ill cat got a plastic bag caught around his neck (eek!) and he must have run into the cat door in blind panic. My partner got home to discover ruined cat door, and cat with plastic “superman cape”. It’s not happened again – they normally push the door a little either with their nose or their paw, and if it doesn’t move, they leave it alone.

I might have agreed had the original host not backed down due to harrassment, and then tried to cover up where the harrassment was coming from.

But this happening twice in a row? And all the backlash on the facebook page? Nah, someone’s trying to stop this from happening.

That Jezebel got involved should be enough of a tell. Hell, just look at the update. Its not the first time someone from your camp turned on one of their own to shut them up. I’d be afraid too, if I were her.

Sharon…

Ok, seriously. Cutting the bullshit for a minute.

Why would the MRA’s back out on this? They’ve been chomping at the bit for a debate at an open forum. Theyved wanted this badly for a long time now. Why would some guy who wanted to host it intentionally get himself fired just to dodge? Making a scene about getting fired wouldn’t have near the same effect as taking on their detractors in front of the public. They know this, you all know this.

Could you please show us where anyone has suggested that this guy got himself fired and escorted off the premises by police just so he could dodge the debate?

No one… and I mean no one… has seriously suggested that. What that vast majority of us think is that this fancy little “debate” was a victim of this Marshall character’s legal issues and sketchy history.

The problem here is Elam and the MRAs trying to turn this into yet another “feminist Illuminati” conspiracy.

Citations seriously needed.

Just look at all the damage control here and on r/againstmensrights (where manboobz also posts). It doesn’t take a conspiracy theorist to know that something is up.

Damage control?

Again… citation needed.

And you can start by telling us what, exactly, you mean by “damage control”…

Sharon, no one cares. That’s why the debate didn’t happen–it’s not some big conspiracy, it’s just that no one outside of a small corner of the internet cares about the MRM. The only people who do care enough to threaten anyone are the MRAs.

Is it just me, or does Ms. Seemins sound like a certain student from Boston?

Why is the loss of this “debate” opportunity being treated (by some, from the MRA movement) as though it spells the end of said movement? Oh that it would, but nobody here seems to be acting like the “debate” was even important in the scheme of things. So given that it wasn’t important to begin with, not having it, or having it postponed, does not mean the end of the world. Did some MRAs think this was going to be an “I have a dream” type occasion?

I haven’t noticed any “damage control”, I’ve just noticed people poking fun. And being pretty damned polite doing it too. Oh, and kitteh stories and links. 🙂

I’m now wondering if I should buy shares in tinfoil.

thebewilderness

It was never going to happen in the first place. It would have required a modicum of organization on the part of MRAs and the ability to persuade a woman to trust members of the abuser lobby who spend their time making rape and death threats that they don’t mean any harm. How likely is that? Pi times zero?
As was made perfectly clear to the meanest intelligence it was not the objections from feminists but rather the death threats from MRAs that prompted the original proposer to gtfo.

It is extremely suspicious that these drama queens are always surrounded by such drama. Conspiracies must be afoot!

In other news, I am on page 2 of a father’s story and I learned that Air Canada is in fact actually a bastard about accommodating people with peanut allergies. I didn’t learn this from his website – I went and found a new story about the legal battle they lost on the matter. A 13 hour drive seems mighty inconvenient, but I’m still puzzling about how a weekend trip to the middle of nowhere can cost $4,000 each time. Especially when you apparently have your schedule set up to six months in advance. How much do hotels in Red Deer, Alberta cost? I could plan a sweet week in Tokyo for you with that budget.

The idea that there’s a feminist conspiracy to stop a bunch of guys from having a debate with themselves at a car dealership, and the cops are in on it, is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while.
